A Shark! Named Jamison Hardcover – March 30, 2017
Purchase options and add-ons
A Shark! Named Jamison is a true story about the adventure and rescue of a juvenile great white shark on the coast of Cape Cod during the summer of 2015. A surprise landing for Jamison caused a surprise for the beach goers and an unexpected rescue opportunity.
Many of the researchers from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy believe that the great white shark that washed up on a Chatham beach during the summer of 2015, and was tagged and named "Jamison," may have pulled through after his unexpected ordeal. The story, the rescue and the amazing community teamwork to ensure that Jamison's adventure ended with the shark's survival is still being admired around the world.
In their new book, A Shark! Named Jamison, Consie and Nina Berghausen take on the challenge of creating a version of Jamison's true story and adventure written as a reader for ages 5-12 (K-6) and a great picture book for preschoolers. Their year-long effort to perfect both the text and illustrations of a colorful, fully illustrated book seems to have paid off.
As the author, Consie gives the young readers an opportunity to go inside the mind of "Jamison" and imagine how a juvenile white shark could find himself in such a position. In the thirty-eight page book, she challenges the young reader to imagine what Jamison must have been thinking as he was the center of attention in the waters and on a beach in beautiful Cape Cod. Her distinctive sense of rhyme and her gentle treatment of a harrowing ordeal skillfully allow young readers to enjoy the suspense of a good story "gone badly" and then "good again."
Nina's ascending brilliance as an illustrator and artist is displayed on every page of the book. The way she is able to seamlessly choreograph her mother's sense of rhyme within the true, natural colors and unbelievable beauty of the waters and beaches of Cape Cod is quite captivating.
At the front of the book, parents will find a "Parents Corner" page with some tantalizing facts about sharks to share with the youngest readers and prepare them for Jamison's amazing adventure.
By all accounts, the mother and daughter team also display amazing teamwork in their new book and has exceeded all expectations.
This is the fourth Book written and illustrated by the team of Consie and Nina Berghausen. Consie splits her time between Tucson, Arizona and Chatham, Massachusetts. Her home in Chatham is on a saltwater marsh. It is her many years of watching wildlife out her back window that inspired her debut novel, The Saltwater Marsh, a Magical Place. She and Riverhaven books most recently teamed up to publish her next story set in Chatham, The Cormorant and the Clam. A teacher and former therapist, Consie now enjoys writing about nature and wildlife. She plays the piano and a mean game of tennis. Nina is a graphic design artist in California. She enjoys working at the public library, playing tennis, and horseback riding. She also has a heart for animals.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2018This book is unlike any other! Nina Berghausen's skills have greatly grown over the years and now each page is a true work of art. Consie's prose is a pure pleasure to read out loud, and the subject matter is near and dear to all of us who live on the Cape. This book serves as an engaging way to talk about kindness, especially to animals that aren't so cute or cuddly. With the influx of sharks onto our shores I can see this being a great educational tool to teach children about respect for wildlife.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2017I teach elementary grades and will surely be adding this one to my library. A Shark Named Jamison resonates with kids who are fascinated with sharks and is a winner for adults as well! A charming book full of clever rhymes, beautifully illustrated by the author's daughter, educational and endearing. I was rooting for Jamison even if he is a Great White!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2017This is a marvelous book! The prose and artwork are delightful! It's certainly the best children's book I've ever seen dealing with sharks. I was also surprised to learn how accurate the story was after I found videos and news reports on Youtube describing the real-life 2015 incident on Chatham Beach in Cape Cod.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2020GREAT book and GREAT price. My shark obsessed nephews looved reading about Jamison!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2017What a beautifully written and well-illustrated book. My two grandchildren really loved it. They ask me to read it to them every time I drop by and just cannot stop talking about sharks.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2017Great fun! Another lovely, inspiring adventure by the Berghausens! The eagerness of youth leads a youngster (Jamison, the shark) into trouble! Thankfully, tragedy is avoided thanks to a coordinated effort by an assortment of quick thinking and caring folk. An exciting and educational tale, based on real events, to be enjoyed by youngsters of any age for its narrative, its joyous illustrations and its thoughtful, positive themes. Get it for your kids and enjoy the ride with them!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2017Oh Jamison! I'm happy you made it back in the water (oh woops! did I give it away?!) Lovely illustrations, great rhymes, a treasure of a tale, a shark's tale, and one that connects humanity with the world's precious creatures . . . may we cherish this tale and its message of caring attention to our ecosystem. So very pertinent. So very important to share with our kids. Thank you Consie and Nina . . . I will share this with my granddaughter and keep it in our special library.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 25, 2018Consie's children's books are fun and witty. My grandchildren love how her stories rhyme. The illustrations are lovely. Having been a school teacher, I appreciate that Consie uses real-life stories that teach about nature and our relationship to it and how we can be empathetic caretakers.
