A woman discovers that not all monsters are her enemy—the opposite, in fact—in this new paranormal romance by Lana Ferguson, author of The Fake Mate.

Keyanna “Key” MacKay is used to secrets. Raised by a single father who never divulged his past, it’s only after his death that she finds herself thrust into the world he’d always refused to speak of. With just a childhood bedtime story about a monster that saved her father’s life and the name of her estranged grandmother to go off of, Key has no idea what she’ll find in Scotland. But repeating her father’s mistakes and being rescued by a gorgeous, angry Scotsman—who thinks she’s an idiot—is definitely the last thing she expects.

Lachlan Greer has his own secrets to keep, especially from the bonnie lass he pulls to safety from the slippery shore—a lass with captivating eyes and the last name he’s been taught not to trust. He’s looking for answers as well, and Key’s presence on the grounds they both now occupy presents a real problem. It’s even more troublesome when he gets a front row seat to the lukewarm welcome Key receives from her family; the strange powers she begins to develop; and the fierce determination she brings to every obstacle in her path. Things he shouldn’t care about, and someone he
definitely doesn’t find wildly attractive.

When their secrets collide, it becomes clear that Lachlan could hold the answers Keyanna is after—and that she might also be the key to uncovering his. Up against time, mystery, and a centuries old curse, they’ll quickly discover that magic might not only be in fairy tales, and that love can be a real loch-mess.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"When Lana Ferguson said she was going to write a book about the Loch Ness Monster, I had no idea what I was in for. I should have known it would include a funny, relatable heroine, copious amounts of spice, and the sexiest hero that ever graced a kilt. You WANT to read this!"—Ruby Dixon, USA Today bestseller

"
Under Loch and Key is Lana at the top of her game. Unique, atmospheric, playful and so hot you'll be looking for the nearest loch to cool off in, her books are everything I'm happy to reach for time and time again."—Tarah DeWitt, USA Today bestselling author of Savor It

"Ferguson puts her own ingeniously clever and wonderfully whimsical spin on the Loch Ness monster legend and the Scottish romance with a delightful rom-com that delivers plenty of cheeky banter and heartfelt musings on the importance of family as well as love scenes hot enough to warm up the coldest Scottish loch."—

About the Author

Lana Ferguson is a USA Today bestselling author and sex-positive nerd whose works never shy from spice or sass. A faded Fabio cover found its way into her hands at fifteen, and she’s never been the same since. When she isn’t writing, you can find her randomly singing show tunes, arguing over which Batman is superior, and subjecting her friends to the extended editions of The Lord of the Rings. Lana lives mostly in her own head but can sometimes be found chasing her corgi through the coppice of the great American outdoors.

So fun

So fun
A Lana Ferguson book mixed with Scottish folklore signed me up. This was such a fun read, I love all things Scottish folklore, and so this book immediately sucked me in. Keyana And Lachlan are your definitive enemies to lovers in the best way possible. Not only was their love story beautiful to watch unfold, but it was so fun watching them navigate the mystery of how to solve the curse. I definitely recommend adding this to your TBR.

📖✨ Under Loch and Key by Lana Ferguson ✨📖

If a Hallmark monster romance is your guilty pleasure, then grab your cozy blanket and dive into Under Loch and Key! 🏰🐉 This paranormal romance delivers plenty of cheesy, cringe worthy moments (in the best way!) but pairs them with a fun, lighthearted storyline and a touch of spice. 🌶️

Keyanna’s journey to Scotland for family secrets and magic collides with Lachlan, her grumpy Scotsman savior—and their dynamic is full of bickering and slow burn potential. Think family curses, newfound powers, and a moody guy trying so hard not to care… yeah, we’ve seen it before, but it still hits. The chemistry wasn’t quite swoon worthy, but the quirky, magical setting kept me charmed.

If you’re in the mood for a loch mess of magic, romance, and feel good vibes, this is one to add to your TBR! Just don’t expect to be blown away by the sparks. ✨👩‍❤️‍👨

I loved The Fake Mate, but when I saw this cover I was absolutely feral. I’ve been waiting MONTHS for its release and it didn’t disappoint.

📕 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Under Loch & Key by Lana Ferguson

    📙 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀: Standalone

📗 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀: E-book on Kindle. Borrowed from Libby.

    📘 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗿𝗲: Paranormal romance

📔 𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝘀: Enemies-to-lovers, all the banter, Scottish hero, kilts for days, fish out of water, one bed.

📖 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: After the death of her father, Key travels to Scotland to connect with her estranged family. There, she meets Lachlan, an insufferable grump who is searching for answers of his own.

🌟 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: I’m a little wishy washy on whether I love Lana Ferguson, but I just had a feeling about this book. Maybe - between The Fake Mate and this book - her home is in paranormal romance.

I loved the entire trip this book took me on. I loved a good grief journey, and Key’s story with her family was a wonderful sub plot to all of this.

The entire book was fun, interesting, and well constructed - but the banter between Key and Lachlan shined above it all. Loved the lore and the take Lana Ferguson had on it. The spice didn’t disappoint - especially as a monster lover.

    𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: 4.5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I'm 50/50 on Lana Ferguson books - I either love and binge them, or reluctantly finish. This novel was a reluctant finish. The set up is great, and the beginning of the story really sucks you in...until you hit the 25% mark and suddenly the book just drags. For once in a modern romance, it's the MMC instead of the FMC that is the problem. I just couldn't get behind his characterization and find him swoon-worthy and the romance does not hit at all. The mystery elements of the book are fairly light-hearted in comparison to a true mystery or thriller novel, so even that can't distract you from the other elements. There's really no plot twists that you can't see coming from 75+ pages away, so the plot lost a lot of the potential plot magic that it did have.

Really enjoyed this fun, magic-filled romance set in beautiful Scotland. Charming characters, a spooky graveyard, a local pub, and a creepy old castle all represent, as well as a touch of mystery and loads of fantasy but be warned-it’s spicy.

I really enjoyed this story (and the spice). I only wish the family member that ended up being a villain had a more interesting story.

Definitely recommend this sweet Fairytale love story

This romantic fantasy takes place in a village in Scotland near the shores of Loch Lomond. It's got sea monsters, a centuries old curse, kelpies, an ancient castle, the emergence of new magic, and a long standing feud between two local families. Keyanna and Lachlan are at the center of the action. She's from America and part of the family that's been in opposition to his. They begin as adversaries and eventually become allies as they work together to figure out how to undo the curse affecting Lachlan's family. Both have lost their fathers and are ultimately searching for family. They need to learn to trust each other and to remember that they can choose their own paths.

The characters are likable and their detective work to find the origin and solution for the curse was interesting. Nonetheless, I found myself skimming big sections in the middle of the book. Not sure if it was because the pacing was a little too slow or if it was because the author signalled the villain fairly early and I wanted my suspicions confirmed.

This book was absolutely everything I was hoping for. I love a good enemies to lovers story and add in the mystery of the Loch Ness Monster, I knew I had to read this. The chemistry between Key and Lachlan was undeniable. The story and characters had my emotions all over the place. Truly an amazing read that I absolutely loved.

A unique steamy supernatural romance. I liked the setting and found myself trying to imagine the accent when I read. The monster romance elements were an interesting take on the Nessie myth so there's that. This is my second book by this author (the first being The Nanny) and I found I preferred this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars US edition is 'indie' printen by Amazon and lacks quality
Reviewed in Germany on December 8, 2024
I haven't yet read the story so I can't review it, but I specifically ordered the US Berkley edition because I wanted the kilt pattern on the spine. However, when I received my order, I was surprised by the bad quality of the printed book. It's incredibly heavy, the pages are chalk white and an affront to the eyes, it keeps splitting in the middle due to bad binding and the cover in-person appears quite blurry. The mat finish feels weird and the book doesn't properly open without severely damaging the spine. The image on the spine is also misaligned.

The interior is definitely the Berkley typeset, but when I checked the back, I noted that it wasn't printed by them but by Amazon Poland...
I requested a refund and will be purchasing the UK (Piatkus) version.

I am, however, still very excited about the story!

So, an ok read, but perhaps you may want to wait and borrow from the library. For me this one was not worth the purchase price as it’s not one I would read multiple times.
