The Alzheimer's/Hearing Aid Paradox: In Search of Sanity Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 9 ratings

The facts are staggering. Scientific studies have shown that people with hearing loss have up to a 500 percent higher risk of dementia (including Alzheimer’s), as well as serious falls and clinical depression. Today, around six million Americans have Alzheimer’s—a number that is only expected to increase and overwhelm the healthcare system in the next five to seven years.

In a groundbreaking presentation, Dr. Robert Keefer relies on 30 years of experience in the healthcare industry and the results of his meticulous research to offer insights on how to correct outdated Medicare policies, improve US hearing healthcare, and ensure well-performing hearing aids for everyone in need. After detailing why people with hearing loss don’t use hearing aids, he leads us on a journey into the world of these tiny medical devices, the US hearing healthcare matrix, the technology, and costs surrounding hearing aids, stories of those with hearing loss, wisdom from audiologists in their own words, and ways to advocate for changes that save hundreds of billions of dollars in healthcare expenses.

The Alzheimer’s/Hearing Aid Paradox shares insights and facts from a hearing aid industry insider that point the way to lowering the risk and cost of Alzheimer’s by providing hearing aids for everyone in need.

Dr. Keefer has performed a service to us all. Written with care to allow us all to understand and comprehend the need for everyone to hear and stay in touch with our circle of friends and associates. Hearing and dementia go hand in hand. Medicare should take hearing aids under their wings and provide to people in need.
    Thank you Dr. Keefer.

Robert explains an incredibly difficult subject with wisdom and grace. The impacts of Alzheimer's on the medical and insurance fields are seldom understood. This book paves the way for more informed discussion.

This book should be read by anyone of any age, as we all will face aging, and the possibility of hearing loss and dementia. Send a copy to your Congress person to encourage Medicare to back this.

Until I become more aware of those who were hearing impaired, heard their stories, and learned how it impacted them, I was uninformed on the impact of hearing loss. Even more so, I didn’t have the realization of how important your Audiologist is and the fact that hearing aid technology has progressed a great deal. This book has raised my awareness on so many levels. When someone has a hearing deficit, it impacts the quality of their life, their social interactions, and can create difficulties and strained communication if it’s unrecognized and untreated. I feel that everyone should read this book and be informed about hearing loss and its impact. It’s likely you, or someone in your family may be affected, and it can be easier to navigate what to do and expect if there is a deeper awareness around hearing loss.

This is a really straightforward guide to navigating the world of hearing loss and how to treat it, while also advocating for the need for more access to hearing aids. I think everyone that experiences hearing loss or have a loved one that does will find this helpful, especially with all the hearing healthcare options out there.

As a fitness and yoga instructor for nearly 3 decades, I've worked closely with clients from all walks of life including clients that are hard of hearing. Time and time again, over the years, hard-of-hearing clients have expressed how important it is to be in a community of others, moving, expressing, and sharing a common bond through health and wellness all along fulfilling that deep need to be a part of something greater. I wish I had this book decades ago to be a shining light to those who are hard of hearing because what Dr. Keefer presents in his book will not only help fitness professionals who have hard-of-hearing clients but also bring hope and resources to their friends, and family and loved ones as well.
