After nearly eighteen months at Basgiath War College, Violet Sorrengail knows there’s no more time for lessons. No more time for uncertainty.

Because the battle has truly begun, and with enemies closing in from outside their walls and within their ranks, it’s impossible to know who to trust.

Now Violet must journey beyond the failing Aretian wards to seek allies from unfamiliar lands to stand with Navarre. The trip will test every bit of her wit, luck, and strength, but she will do anything to save what she loves―her dragons, her family, her home, and
him.

Even if it means keeping a secret so big, it could destroy everything.

They need an army. They need power. They need
magic. And they need the one thing only Violet can find―the truth.

But a storm is coming...and not everyone can survive its wrath.

The Empyrean series is best enjoyed in order.

5 out of 5 stars
A story of twists, turns, and devastations.
Contains Spoilers!!I started out reading this book with high expectations, mainly because of how long the wait was to finally get it. In her epigraph quote, Mrs. Yarros set a great tone for the book, and it was something that resonated with me personally.“To the ones who don’t run with the popular crowd, the ones who get caught reading undertheir desks, the ones who feel like they never get invited, included, or represented. Get your leathers. We have dragons to ride.” (Yarros, 2025, epigraph). That quote hit home for me, and I had to honestly put the book down for a few minutes and just let that feeling sink in. Growing up I was bullied a lot because I was different or defective. You see, I had cancer that caused me to lose my right eye, the treatment resulted in me being immunosuppressant, causing me to be sick a lot. I spent a lot of time by myself and dove into books as my source of companionship, which is why this quote touched me so much. I love when authors start out with an epigraph, especially if it feels like it is talking to me!Now, on to the story, where Mrs. Yarros dives right in setting the tone for the book, the struggle to save Xaden. Mrs. Yarros also gives a glimpse into why the book is called Onyx Storm, by saying that the mental connection between Xaden and Violet is there but resembles a thick wall of “...chilled onyx” (Yarros, 2025, Prologue). Also, I love that Xaden and Violet still revolve around the theme of rebellion throughout this book, first with the ban of their relationship and ending with their surprise marriage! Additionally, even though they are separated for a lot of this book, the romance and spice level is something that I enjoyed but does also leave me wishing for more.We finally find out what Violet’s second Signet is from Andarna. She is a “...dream-walker” (Yarros, 2025, Chapter Fifty). However, this revolution isn’t explored much before Andarna separates from Violet for her kind, which leaves Violet with one dragon instead of two. It is later revealed that even without Andarna, Violet still contains the power of dream-walking, which means she technically still has two Signet powers. Also, something that got me, when Andarna comes back to Violet at the end of the book, does that mean she is forming a new connection? If so, could this new connection result in a new Signet power, possibly one that will help save Xaden? Will Violet be the first rider to have three Signet powers?Overall, I equally loved and hated this book, I would rate the book a 4.5 out of 5. It provided almost as many answers as it created new questions. It provided some plot twists that were unexpected but also had a lot of predictable elements, for example, how the dragons rejected Andarna. But overall, I am happy with how the story is turning out. I believe that if Mrs. Yarros would have let Violet save Xaden before he turned full Venin would have not been true to the story as a whole. I think figuring out how to cure, or at least restore what they have lost, to full Venin is the end game for this series. Finally, I am left with the wonder if Violet will now be referred to as a Duchess and what will her last name look like!

I would give this book ♾️⭐️
Onyx Storm, the third book in Rebecca Yarros’ The Empyrean series, is hands down not just the best book of the series—it’s the best book I’ve ever read. Yarros delivers everything we could have hoped for and more, with unparalleled character development, heart-stopping twists, and a world that grows richer with every page.

Violet absolutely owns this book. My favorite FMC of all time has officially been crowned, and there is no competition. She was everything—unexpected, brilliant, and unstoppable. Watching her rise to every challenge and truly step into her own was awe-inspiring. Violet is that FMC, and I’ll defend her with every fiber of my being. She’s clever, strong, and endlessly complex—an inspiration from start to finish.

And then there’s Xaden. Where do I even begin? No other fictional man will ever come close. He somehow managed to get even better in this book. Every time he opened his mouth, I folded. His devotion to Violet, his grit, his vulnerability—it’s all too much, in the best way. Violet and Xaden together? Perfection. They’re the standard, and no fictional couple will ever compare. It’s them or nothing.

The plot was pure brilliance. It perfectly balances answering lingering questions from the previous books while introducing so many new mysteries that my head is still spinning. The banter? Immaculate. The twists? Devastating and perfect. The character development? A hundred out of ten. We got so much more of the OG friendships, heartwarming moments, and laugh-out-loud exchanges, even as the stakes skyrocketed. And the quest to uncover Andarna’s origins? Easily one of the most engaging and fun storylines yet.

The world-building is, simply put, masterful. Exploring more of the isles and their unique cultures added so much depth to this already expansive world. The lore was positively delicious, and I devoured every bit of it. The shifting group dynamics, the tension between characters, and the constant sense of impending danger made this book impossible to put down.

Now, let’s talk about that ending. Utterly criminal. It was devastating, brilliant, and downright outrageous all at once. I have so many questions, and the thought of waiting for answers feels unbearable. How am I supposed to function after this book? I’m absolutely undone. Obsessed doesn’t even begin to cover it—I’m ruined in the best way possible.

Onyx Storm is not just a book; it’s an experience. Rebecca Yarros has delivered a masterpiece that surpasses all expectations. It’s thrilling, emotional, and utterly unforgettable. If you thought Fourth Wing and Iron Flame was good, wait until you read this. Violet and Xaden’s story continues to be one of the best I’ve ever read, and I’m so ready to see where this journey takes us next. Book four cannot come soon enough.

I loved Onyx Storm, and I can't wait for the next book! Yarrow's writing continues to be a highlight – she has this amazing knack for balancing humor and really touching moments. In fact, I even teared up a few times – the emotional punches really landed! I especially loved learning more about the dragons and their ideology, and seeing Violet and Xaden's love story continue to develop. The book also does a great job depicting the corrupting influence of power. And, of course, I have to mention Broccoli – you'll know what I mean when you read it!

Now, while I thoroughly enjoyed Onyx Storm, there were a couple of things I noticed. I did find myself wishing there was more representation of Violet's chronic illness. As a hypermobility girlie myself, I so feel for her, and I think that aspect of her experience could have been explored further for the future. Also, I noticed that some pivotal moments and plans happen behind the scenes, so I wasn't always clued in on Violet's motivations or actions. It made certain parts a little tricky to follow initially, but I suspect it will all make perfect sense on a second read. Onyx Storm definitely felt like a bridge book, laying a lot of groundwork for the future. I spent the first chunk of the book getting my bearings with new characters and locations, and exploring more of the world's history. Honestly, it took me a little while to really get into it, and the initial setup was a tad confusing. But once I found my footing? Things started to click, and the story really took off. The rest of the book was captivating.

But honestly, those small things didn't detract from my overall enjoyment. This book definitely expands the lore and plot in exciting ways, and I can't wait to see what happens next!

3.75 ⭐ This book was a mixed bag and a bit slower to get through than the first two, but overall I've already bought into this series and will definitely keep reading it.

First I want to say how much I appreciate the wonderful and complex world RY built within this series. It truly is immersive and detailed and so real in my fantasy reader's minds eye.

My main issue with this book was pacing. It was slower to me than the previous two books. I think for me there are 2 primary roots to this problem:
The plot. It was kind of all over the place. I wasn't sure what was happening sometimes or what I was supposed to be anticipating. There was just too much and it wasn't as streamlined and tight as I'd have liked.
Too many characters. I think there is a reason many fantasy books are quests with a tight nit group, or feature creatures like dwarves or trolls who like to live away from people. The reality of Violet's life is logically that she will encounter lots of characters. And we did in this story, and it was so hard to keep up, and as a result, care about all these new characters.

I almost hope book 4 is Violet stranded on an island with only her dragons and closest friends.

What a ride Onyx Storm took me in! This book was captivating from start to finish. It was such a big book, but I felt everything was important, well developed and very informative. I was instantly hooked from the first chapter and I don't feel there was any dull moment. This third book in The Empyrean Series is wihout a doubt my new favorite!

As I expected, Onyx Storm was action packed and full of political aspects and revelations that had my jaw dropping multiple times through my read. It was also brimming with romance and spice, but also friendship and loyalty. Regardless of these beautiful lighter moments, there was also sadness, anguish, heartbreak, betrayal, scheming and casualties.

Violet rose as a powerful and brave heroine. The way she tried to leanr and control her power more was spellbinding. She was devoted to a cause bigger than herself, but also so ardent for Xaden and her unshakable love for him. And that man... wow! I already loved him, but he outmatched himself. He was the perfect partner and his one liners full of passion, possessiveness, humor and love had me swooning. His circumstance wasn't easy, but he still fought for his cause.

I was fascinated by the whole cast! Seriously, the squad and the way they work together and support each other was incredible. They're truly the meaning of found family.

How can I wrapup this review without mentionning Tairn and Andarna. Once again, these two were the perfect companions to Violet. Their irresistible personalities had me enthralled. Tairn with his ever present grumpiness and Andarna with her candor and sweetness. The perfect dragon duo!

I tried to savor this book by reading a little slower, but I utlimately finished it quite fast for a book this long. And now, I'm dying for the next book that will release in forever, lol!

This book is a whirlwind of emotions. I’m still trying to figure out how on earth I’m supposed to carry on with my life while waiting for the next book. It has been one month since I read it and I am still NOT. OVER. IT. The way this book has me on chokehold is ridiculous.

The world-building in this book is phenomenal - we get to explore new places beyond Basgiath and Tyrrendor! And there is always something happening. I had to pause at times just to breathe and collect my thoughts because my heart was racing throughout the entire book.

Violet truly came into her own in this story. I’ve always known she was a badass, but wow, did our girl SHINE! She was smart, cunning, confident... I was so incredibly proud of her. And I was especially happy that we didn’t have any frustrating miscommunication issues with Xaden. Speaking of him, can he be any more perfect? Even after everything he goes through, this man still manages to make me swoon with his expressions of love for Violet. Their scenes together? Absolutely dreamy. I was kicking my feet with every interaction.

And that ending… I don’t even know how to feel. I am very, very confused. That’s all I’ll say.

Rebecca, you deserve all the time in the world to rest before writing the next book. But I will be dreaming of book four every. single. day.
