What I say goes!" Through age-appropriate illustrations and engaging text this book, written by the author of 'No Means No!' and 'Some Secrets Should Never Be Kept', will teach children the following crucial and empowering skills in personal body safety: • identifying safe and unsafe feelings • recognizing early warning signs • developing a safety network • using the correct names for private parts • understanding the difference safe and unsafe touch • understanding the difference between secrets and surprises • respecting body boundaries. About the author

Jayneen Sanders (aka Jay Dale) is an experienced early years educator, children’s book author and publisher.
She is the leading children’s book author on body safety and consent with nine books written in this space, and more currently in production. Jayneen has also written, and continues to write, children’s books on gender equality and social and emotional intelligence.
Jayneen began her teaching career in the 1980s as a primary school teacher in rural Queensland, Australia. She then moved to Melbourne, Victoria, and taught at several inner-city schools.
In 1985, Jayneen had a change of career and became an educational editor and publisher.
In the early 90s, Jayneen and her partner moved to Japan to work as English teachers. They lived and worked in Japan for over three and a half years. In fact, Jayneen's first daughter was born there.
On returning to Australia, Jayneen began working as an educational author/packager. Since then, she has authored and produced numerous award-winning titles for the educational publishing industry. Jayneen is also an accomplished children's book author, writing titles for literacy series such as ZigZags, Totally Kidz, Deadly and Incredible, and a children's picture book series for Penguin.
Jayneen is currently the lead author of the literacy series Engage Literacy published by Capstone. She has written over 150 titles for that series.
Jayneen is a mother of three daughters and was a school councillor at her local school for over seven years. This time spent in schools both as a teacher and a parent inspired her to ask the question of her community: 'What are we doing in schools to protect our children from inappropriate touch?' When she realised very little was being done, she decided to use her authoring and publishing skills to write 'Some Secrets Should Never Be Kept' to help parents, caregivers and teachers to broach this subject and encourage children to speak up.
After the encouraging response to 'Some Secrets Should Never Be Kept', Jayneen realised there was a need to further build upon the idea of prevention education. Jayneen participated in Protective Behaviours professional development and attended numerous conferences on the topic to educate herself in how to keep children safe and provide them with age-appropriate and empowering body safety and consent education.
Jayneen then went on to develop and publish a comprehensive Body Safety and Respectful Relationship Teacher's Resource Kit as well as writing many more children's books on the topics of body safety, consent, respect, gender equality, social and emotional intelligence, and diversity and inclusion.
Jayneen currently works with her partner, Mark Sanders to run Educate2Empower Publishing. Her ongoing passion for the safety and empowerment of children continues today, with new manuscripts and free-to-download resources always in the wings.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2016Wonderful book. Have already recommended it to friends. The book opens up by describing different feelings one has and signs of those feelings. For example: when you are happy you may want to smile and play and dance and when you are sad you may want to cry; it's okay to cry- that's why we have tears. This leads to describing to feeling of being unsafe. The author lists examples of when one may feel unsafe (example: I felt unsafe when my aunts dog barked at me. I felt unsafe when someone stood to close to me and I did not want them to, etc). The book mentions what our body may experience when we are feeling unsafe (sweating, wanting to cry, needing to use the bathroom, etc) and says that we may experience all or just one of these signs when we are feeling unsafe. The book then describes a safety network and how it is important that we always talk to someone in our safety network when we are feeling unsafe. Then the reader goes on to hear about what private parts are, their importance of calling them by their correct names, and how no one ever touches yours or ask to look at yours, shows or asked you to touch theirs, or shows you pictures. The book talks about the importance of consent and personal boundaries. I believe the book was written to give children knowledge, confidence, and is written in ways for them to understand. I also liked the pages at the end of the book written for the parents.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2018I'm still new to these kinds of books, but I'm rather impressed with all the areas this one covers. I purchased for a 3.5 year old, so it may be too advanced for her right now, but we still read it. I like that it illustrates what feeling unsafe/danger is like, it has you make a list of trusted adults, it touches on why we don't have secrets, and of course it talks about private parts (not much detail in this area, just a list, but this is also not an anatomy book). Even at 3 my daughter already asks me followup questions after re-reads. We'll keep reading and talking abut it every few weeks. When she is older I'll start doing the discussion questions listed in the back. I already recommended this book to some friends.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2022This is a great book for toddlers to help explain some things about their body to them in a way that they can grasp and understand. My daughter was 3.5 at the time that I purchased this book. It helped me explain a little bit about her body and her "private parts". She is in daycare where they have regular public-like restrooms but no doors on the stalls. They originally start out (at the age of 2) potty training in one bathroom with the entire class; boys and girls together. She, of course, started noticing differences between boys and girls. She also needed to learn how and why to be a bit more discreet as she got older with using these restrooms on a daily basis. She i snow 5 and she still asks me to read this book to her.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2023My 3 year old understood most of it well! He actually loves it and asks me to read it all the time. I think it’s age appropriate and you can adjust the language a little so your child can understand it better but it gives you a great outline to start that conversation with your child.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2019This book should be a basic part of every child’s library. If it was, the world would be a safer and better place for us all! Everyone should read this book to their children regularly. This book combats abuse in our society and teaches body knowledge and respect, which protects our children from predators. It helps children identify safe people in their lives and learn to not keep things secret but to tell trusted grown ups.
I’m so glad I bought this book for my daughter. And I hope everyone buys it for their sons too! Because boys need this knowledge just as much as girls. It is inclusive and written for boys and girls, which I also love.
This should really be a part of everyone everywhere’s library and read frequently to young children as early as they can be read to. Adults should really learn these basic ideas too.
I’ve used this book now in counseling with my clients as well. Everyone appreciates this book and is grateful for its simple concepts which make so much sense.
These books could really help our world be safer if everyone would read them and practice them.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2024My 3-year-old is about to start daycare, so I bought this book to teach her about body boundaries. It’s written well, however, I do feel like it’s still a little advanced for her. She’s very smart, but doesn’t quite grasp the concepts yet. I think this would be great for 5 years+!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelente!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Cool Workbook That Teaches Vital Concepts Effectively
I enjoy the format of this book. It introduces a concept and follows it with a question. The beginning explains feelings and then poses questions to ask the child more about their own feelings. (There is an appendix in the back with further info on questions that can be posed). I like how it goes from exploring feelings to then discussing how we also know what feels safe or unsafe.
I valued that real body part names like penis and vulva are used. I also really liked that a variety of people from different walks of life are shown.
There are several core concepts taught that are so great. ie. How important it is to have adults you feel safe with to talk to if you feel unsafe, what the difference is between secrets and surprises, who your safety network is, what a safety bubble is on your body... Obviously this is a broad manual but the guardian of the child can easily make it personal and talk with the child about who THEIR network is.
As someone who was surprised by a predator known to me when I was a child, I really believe that this book is a treasure. It can't identify every potential danger person but it teaches the important core concepts that when put together would allow a child to recognize when they feel unsafe and to take appropriate action. It's a great tool in the first steps of safety education.
That being said, my 4 year old niece found it a bit overwhelming. She had a lot of fun answering questions but then lost interest quickly. So, I am putting the book away for a bit and will introduce it again in 6 months and where her attention span is then.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect way to introduce body safety and feelings to young children
My children really enjoy reading this and answering the questions. Wroten in a way young children will understand without being too scary or complicated, this book will help teach and guid children not only to understand these issues, but to speak up about them too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must buy book
This is a very important book which must be explained and read with children. I read with my 6 year old. It is easy to understand. And gets the point accross.
