The ABCs of Trail Riding and Horse Camping: Essential Knowledge for Trail and Camp Paperback – October 20, 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
Experienced and aspiring trail riders and horse campers alike will enjoy and benefit from reading The ABCs of Trail Riding and Horse Camping. This book goes beyond the scope of traditional horse-riding texts, revealing hundreds of field-tested tips to improve your next outdoor adventure. With clear descriptions organized alphabetically for quick reference, this guide by veteran trail riding and camping clinician Robert Eversole divulges essential knowledge for every horse owner.
From Advocacy to Xenophon, The ABCs of Trail Riding and Horse Camping will help guide your equine journey onto the trails and into the horse camp of your dreams. With sections devoted to what to look for in a trail horse, training the horse once you’ve got him, trailering tips to get him to the trailhead safely, and even the outdoor skills you’ll need to know to make your equine adventures safer.
Chockfull of handy information ranging from the simple (e.g., groundwork that works) to the more complex (e.g., stopping trail snacking), this book will appeal to ardent trailblazers and more cautious trail riders alike. Indeed, for those prone to stay within an arena rather than venture further afield, Eversole’s trail anecdotes alone are enough to make this well worth a read. With Eversole’s tome in hand, your trail riding and horse camping journey will be all the more rewarding.
One of the great joys of trail riding on a good horse is leaving the beaten path and enjoying the simple pleasures of being out in nature. The ABCs of Trail Riding and Horse Camping presents a broad range of practical advice, including training tips for creating good trail horses, outdoor skills to increase safety and fun on the trail and in camp, and even what to look for in tack and camping equipment.
NOTE: The image design was intentional. I was trying to convey a Wall Street Journal hedcut style of illustration to generate a feeling. The emphasis is on the text as this is not a step-by-step how-to book. For areas where a more step-by-step process is helpful, I have included an online resource and video page at the back of the book.
I believe that the text thoroughly explains and discusses all the concepts addressed in the book.
Reviewers, thank you for your constructive criticism regarding the illustrations. I agree that the style may not be to everyone’s taste.

About the author
Robert Eversole is an internationally recognized clinician who emphasizes practical horsemanship and outdoor skills in his clinics on trail riding and camping with horses. A refugee from corporate America, Robert built the world's largest guide to horse trails and camps, www.TrailMeister.com, when he found that accurate information was unavailable. In his clinics and trail riding columns in leading equine publications, Robert draws from his experiences as a veteran of the US Marine Corps, a PATH-certified instructor, and decades teaching equestrian and outdoor skills. He lives in the Pacific Northwest with his wife, three mules, a horse, and a dog named Boo.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2021A very well written book by Robert Eversole aka "Trailmeister". Information that we all need for trail riding and horse camping. We all need to stay safe and the knowledge in this book was gained by experience. When I think of all the situations my friends and I had while out riding, this book would have been a godsend. It is still a godsend now, we all need to learn more to avoid or help in a bad situation (or wreck) .
Combining his knowledge gained from experience and learning from the wise men that he rode with, he absorbed it all. We all need to be smart enough to realize that we never stop learning. That each ride will always be different from the last, to always be aware of your horse and surroundings.
This book has added to my "library" in my brain, and will add to yours. From tying knots to what to do if you or a fellow equestrian gets in a wreck. Because a bad wreck can happen no matter how careful, knowledgeable and seasoned a rider. Mr. Eversoles' book contains informative topics from GPS, First Aid preparation, back country overnight trips and much more. This is a book that every trail rider should read and absorb!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2021This was such an amazing book that I could not put down. I read through it is three days and am sad that I finished it!! The layout was a little different at first but in the end, I felt that it makes perfect sense. If I want info on Highlining all I do is go to the "H" chapter, for info on different kinds of rope I just go to the "R" Chapter. To try and search different chapters for specific info on a specific thing would be a challenge. I especially liked the section on Compasses and GPS, because it showed me, I need some help. I now know that I want to learn how to read and navigate using a compass!! I highly recommend that anyone who wants to learn about trail riding and horse camping either in the front country or back country buy this book. Thank you, Robert Eversole aka Trail Meister, for everything you do for all of us equine lovers!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2021Enjoyed this book on a favorite pastime. Hard to find any books on this subject but this one has lots of good tips. Easy to understand language. Not thrilled with the organization of a dictionary with each short subject in alphabetical order, would prefer chapters on subjects better.
Only other complaint is the horrible quality of black-white photos that are so grainy it looks like printed on a dot matrix from the 1980s. Publisher made the cheap choice thus knocking a star off the review.
Author did good job and hope he writes another sequel to this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2023I’m a beginner to horse camping but not backpacking. Still, this book has information for all skill levels to use.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2021A must have for anyone just starting to ride trails /horse camping or been at it for years!
A must have book and a great gift idea for under the Christmas tree!
Love that Robert Eversole aka the 'TrailMeister' combined all of his vast knowledge into this book. The table of content is long, which makes it easy to find and go to the subject the reader is wanting to read up on. A few of my fav subjects are Hello-Just Sat It and Hunting Season Riding Tips. At the end of the book are some important checklists, best to think about these before one heads out- Robert has checklists on trail ride, trailer toolkit and form an emergency plan.

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2021Although I am an aging trail rider and have been at it for decades I still have so much to learn. Robert Eversole’s book Is a must have for the beginning as well as the seasoned trail riders and campers. It is packed full of great ideas and best of all , ways to stay safe on the trail. The section on navigational aids is well worth the price of the book alone and that is just one of hundreds of ideas.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2021His writing style matches his entertaining verbal style. Robert always manages to educate and entertain at the same time. This book is valuable to both the beginner horse camper as well as the experienced one, with tips that are practical and easy to understand and replicate. This book finds a home in my rig.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2022The book has very good information for the beginner or somewhat experienced horse camper, but I find the low quality of the photos distracting and frustrating. I would really like to see details on the pictures, which are often meant to show examples, but can't bear to focus on them for very long.
