Tabletop Role-Playing Therapy: A Guide for the Clinician Game Master Paperback – March 28, 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
A comprehensive book explaining “applied RPGs”―using role-playing games therapeutically.
Across the globe, therapists are using tabletop roleplaying games (RPG) such as Dungeons & Dragons as a part of their practice. This book provides an overview of what RPGs are and what makes them such an effective and powerful tool for therapy. By examining research on gaming, flow, immersion, and role-play, readers will gain a better understanding of the theoretical underpinnings and how to skillfully and ethically use RPGs in their own practices. The author also looks at the history of RPGs, specifically focusing on issues of diversity and representation to help providers understand some possible pitfalls that exist within the medium. The book utilizes an example group to walk through everything from conception, planning, running, documentation, and termination of the group.

The book overall is a wonderful first step for anyone interested in either pursuing treatment, or incorporating applied GMing into their own practice. Dr. Connell does not flout statistics, clinical anecdotes, or rely on case studies for dramatic effect. Instead she uses supporting research in adjacent fields (group therapy, play therapy, gaming theory, drama therapy), with an optimistic application of places where these clearly and intuitively overlap with applied GMing.
This also works as a great companion piece to RPG studies from Fine and Bowman, as their conclusions are applied throughout the book.
I hope that what is posited and observed here will inspire researching scholars to delve deeper into understanding the effects of tabletop roleplaying in therapeutic practice, as Dr. Connell continues her work as a practitioner.

The book reads and feels like most of the other works of people who associate with geek therapeutics; hollow, fluffy, and made with an intention of “I did it first”. I am sure that geek therapeutics will begin to charge people and make sure that only “certified applied rpg therapists” can practice. The whole thing feels like a rush to get out a book that Hawke Robinson already compiled in order to beat Game to Grow’s release date. I was not surprised to see Tony Bean giving it a thumbs up, it’s felt like the other fluff of Pokémon therapy and psychology of Zelda.
If you want much more clinical substance, practical and well planned out structures feel free to skip this fluff and purchase the Game to grow book.
I simply couldn’t put this book down and finished it within a matter of days.
It all made so much sense to me and the penny finally dropped.
I highly recommend this to both players and non player of table top role play games.
