In this second installment of Theology of Home, Carrie Gress and Noelle Mering turn their attention from the home itself to the art of homemaking.

Though there has been a resurgence in the domestic arts and a desire to live a simpler lifestyle, the role of a homemaker is still unpopular. Viewed as an unfulfilling and even oppressive way of life, many women feel a sense of shame or futility in managing the world of their home.

Theology of Home: The Spiritual Art of Homemaking turns this misguided notion on its head, shining new light on the role of a homemaker as it relates the deepest truths of the Faith with an honest and fearless understanding of the modern world. Rather than looking to the 1950s for inspiration, Gress and Mering forge a new path by looking at the gifts women can offer those they love.

Filled with beautiful photography and interviews with several inspiring women,
The Spiritual Art of Homemaking examines:

  • ·        what makes someone a homemaker and how we can look at the role with fresh eyes,
  • ·        how the dots between our love for home and the role of caring for a home can be reconnected,
  • ·        how we can reorient our purpose from achieving power for ourselves to caring for others,
  • ·        how to bear fruit in the various ways in which God calls us,
  • ·        how to foster the qualities that make us particularly adept and skillful at creating a home,
  • ·        the nature of both physical and spiritual motherhood,
  • ·        and how our Mother, the Church, gifts us the means to fulfill the role of a homemaker.

Whether single, married, or a working or stay-at-home mother, discover how to bring beauty, order, and vibrancy to the people and place you love most: Home.

Lovely and inspiring, resonates with me as a woman
5 Stars
Lovely and inspiring, resonates with me as a woman
Just lovely to turn the pages and be inspired by real women sharing their stories, their lives, and their homes. Was pleasantly surprised to have my womanly heart affirmed by this book! I would sum the book up this way - home is found in the heart of a woman. Carrie and her co-authors do a great job of communicating this but in a gentle way through photos and stories of women who love God and others in inspiring but real ways.

I purchased this book to put on my coffee table because the cover picture looked homey and pretty and match the home decor. I didn’t know it had stories and life lessons. This book is beautifully written, the stories will lift your heart. This a Catholic book but any woman of any faith can read it and relate. This is a great option for a gift to a newlywed woman or new mother. It a can also be given as a housewarming gift or even on Mother’s Day.

Another gem! This book has incredible photography and the truth of the writing is so lovely and powerful. I enjoyed it cover to cover. So inspiring and such a blessing. Grateful for the women who wrote this book and wish I could spend time with them! In a sense, it is a home design book with soul, depth, true beauty and pure love. Beautiful!

Homemaking: "The ache with no name" (Betty Friedan) or creating a place where "body and soul are nourished, protected, comforted, and known"? This beautiful second volume of Theology of Home, with its spotlight on the homemaker, investigates and reveals ways in which being a homemaker in families of any size can produce surprising purpose and meaning through the sheltering and nourishing of other souls. With a special focus on motherhood--in its broadest meaning, beautiful photography, information on subjects ranging from olive trees to a history of coffee, biographical blurbs on inspiring women, and much more, this truly is a book that informs and inspires.

Such a beautiful book about what it means to be a homemaker, and how to take back the title in today’s modern world. I will take things from this book with me for many years and I grow in motherhood

I haven't much to say about the actual content of the book, although I did discover AFTER buying that it is written from a Catholic worldview.
My main beef is that it seems to be a scanned version of the hardcover book. I not only couldn't load it onto my Paperwhite, but can't change the font (which is fairly small) OR properly highlight on my Fire. So if I continue, it's going to be a very HARD read...which is why I'm giving only 3 stars even before I've finished the Introduction. Buyer, be warned. And sorry, author ladies, this issue needs to be fixed in order for your work to be effectively appreciated.
