Months ago a ceiling fan/light had quit working; this is one that isn't used often but with the hot weather lately (and no AC), I'm ready for a useable fixture. I couldn't figure out which breaker to turn off using my usual tool (with socket/plug inserts and detector "pen" that runs along breakers to signal which is correct). I was afraid it was the wiring in the ceiling, which would not be pretty to get to. I turned the whole house breaker off to remove the old fan/light, and it seemed as if that least one wire might have become unattached, but I couldn't be for certain (I don't know much about electrical and it makes me nervous, so I err on the side of super caution). Soooo, I did a couple of minutes research, ordered this Klein tool based on how intuitive it was and ease of the signals it gave.
When the tool arrived a couple of days ago, I opened it up, put the directions to the side (hey, I work two jobs so don't get much sleep - I just wanted to see if it was easy), turned it on (batteries included), and found that it is easy to use and understand for my purpose. I'm happy to report the ceiling wiring is fine - or at least has power running thru when the switch is flipped (whew!). When I am ready to put up the new fan/light, I will read the directions just to make sure I don't miss something (remember, I'm a novice) and the Klein tool will be in use to make sure the wires are dead (and I will write down which breaker it is).
It is very handy. It is smaller and feel lighter than my generic version. Its bright color makes it easy to spot. It is UL listed and very simple to use. it has no weird bumps or ridges. its a little wider where the plastics are joined and tapers into its irregular symmetrical hexagonal shape. You can hardly feel lines from the molds meet.
Its design is smart. One flat PCB board that slides in through the rear. One clear plastic piece and a cap. Theres some padding to stop the batteries from clinking inside. With a spring on both the negative and positive terminal. meaning you can shake the thing and it wont raddle.
My old one failed when the plastic on the the tip snapped exposing the metal tip. Klein knew this was a weak point and they beefed up the plastic. The plastic on the tip is thicker. Leading up to the tip its much more rounded meaning its better able to distribute pressure. I did purchase a small case to house the tool in while in my tool bag just in case.
There are few things things i DON'T like about this tester.
I dont like the red cap. Its is very thin and it wasn't cleaned up. If you look carefully at the pictures i provided (And the 3rd photo on the listing) you can see the yellow plastic from behind the red cap. The plastic is very very thin here. On mine its clear they didn't properly clean the edge from the plastic as well.
I don't like the use of complaint mechanism. In this case the use of the clip to hold the red cap on. The plastic will get fatigue and it will get brittle. When that happens it will break and this tool will become trash.
Last is the is the button. It feels sloppy. The issue is the lack of touch feed back. Maybe this wasn't an issue a few years ago. But now especially now that we are used to haptic and audio feed back. Think of your phone. As you type on it your phone may vibrate slightly on each touch or play a small tick tone as you press the screen. When you press the button on your tv remote you know the button has been pressed when you feel the rubber dome collapse.
This tester doesn't have any feed back. its possible to press the button light enough that you feel the dome buckle and bottom out yet the tool didn't receive and input. And when you do press it hard enough to turn it on the light doesn't come on immediately. it makes the tool feel a little bit unresponsive. klein tools if your reading this is an easy fix.
I will say that i work side by side with a lot of electricians and we talk about tools. A lot of them have had these voltage testers for a very long time with the belt clip intact.
Conclusion: This tool is an essential in any tool box hows ever im afraid it wont be a forever tool. And i recommend you purchase a case to carry the tool around. And if you wont be using it to find breakers then id recommend the Klein tool NCVT-3 instead. I suspect the threaded cap will be more durable in the long run then the clip on cap. It also has a nice meter and LED built in.
