An informative and entertaining account of how actions send signals that shape behaviors and how to design better incentives for better results in our life, our work, and our world

“Getting [an] incentives balance right can be complicated. But Gneezy hopes his book provides insights that help people feel prepared to take on the concept and design better incentives.”—Financial Times

“If you think you understand how incentives work, think again. A pioneering behavioral economist reveals how we can create reward systems that minimize unintended consequences and maximize happiness, health, wealth, and success.”—Adam Grant, Granted (blog)

Incentives send powerful signals that aim to influence behavior. But often there is a conflict between what we say and what we do in response to these incentives. The result: mixed signals.

Consider the CEO who urges teamwork but designs incentives for individual success, who invites innovation but punishes failure, who emphasizes quality but pays for quantity. Employing real-world scenarios just like this to illustrate this everyday phenomenon, behavioral economist Uri Gneezy explains why incentives often fail and demonstrates how the right incentives can change behavior by aligning with signals for better results.

Drawing on behavioral economics, game theory, psychology, and fieldwork, Gneezy outlines how to be incentive smart, designing rewards that are simple and effective. He highlights how the right combination of economic and psychological incentives can encourage people to drive more fuel-efficient cars, be more innovative at work, and even get to the gym. “Incentives send a signal,” Gneezy writes, “and your objective is to make sure this signal is aligned with your goals.”

I liked that it talked about incentives from a personal, corporate, and even national level. It made it easy to understand the concepts and its real life applications.

I was largely anticipating the release of this book after reading Gneezy's previous book, The Why Axis, which was one of my favorite reads when it came out. As before, Gneezy manages to write an AAA science book that avoids the filler and repetition that other books in this genre often have and distills the content into a book brimming with insights and fresh examples.

After reading this book, I'll certainly be more careful about how I reward and punish behavior, and I'll be recommending this book for years to come, to business partners and friends alike. 5 stars.

I had the pleasure of working with Professor Gneezy when the book was still in the works to get published. The writing is funny, intriguing, and thought provoking. The book brings in real life examples that one would have never considered through a lens of incentives. It broadens the reader’s understanding of the value and role that incentives play in daily life. My personal favorite example is the public transportation system in Israel. Reading Mixed Signals will ensure a deep and fundamental understanding of incentives within individual, seemingly inconsequential, interactions.

This book opens our eyes and shows us that it’s the signals we send that influence the way people respond to our incentives. If your incentives are giving you less than what you want, then this is the perfect book for you.

This book was very well-written and full of captivating stories with fun cartoons. There are a lot of interesting and counterintuitive examples of how incentives work. For example, in one case study the book describes, introducing a fine to deter non-desirable behavior actually led to an increase in that behavior! Not only is this knowledge valuable for policymakers and corporations, it can also shed light on day-to-day life and lead to meaningful change. Overall, an excellent book!

You don't want to miss out on this one.
This book is filled with great examples of incentives designed by companies and individuals that backfired. The author, an expert on incentives, does a beautiful job explaining why some incentives succeed whereas others do not. Once you read the book, you will not be able to understand how you ever thought differently.
Highly recommended!

This book has more depth than one may initially think. Witten in clear, concise prose, peppered with great stories and clever insights, it is a joy to read. An excellent introductory text on signals and incentives. I suggest to read Hoffmann/Yoeli's "Hidden Games" after this.
