Editorial Reviews

Review

Chicken Little may be the most important resource for parents of kids struggling with anxiety and depression. While other books describe these illnesses, Erica shows us what to do. Brilliantly written and clear, she calms worried parents. If you are concerned about your kids at all, you must read this book.”

—Meg Meeker, MD, pediatrician, parenting expert, podcast host, and best-selling author of Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters

“Raising adolescents today is tougher than ever. With science, wisdom, and heart jumping out of every page,
Chicken Little is the ‘owner’s manual’ parents can’t be without.”

—Randy Tobler, MD, ob/gyn and host of The Randy Tobler Radio Show

Chicken Little, the Sky Isn’t Falling will help any parent navigate our anxious age. Everything seems to be stacked against the mental health of our children and teenagers. But, in reality, there is hope. Read this excellent book to learn what power you have as a parent to raise them to be resilient, happy, and free.”

—W. Bradford Wilcox, director of the National Marriage Project, senior fellow at the Institute for Family Studies, visiting scholar at The American Enterprise Institute

“Kids have more material advantages and less spiritual advantages than any previous generation. Erica helps parents navigate between these two poles. Her insights are both practical and inspiring. They very well might save your child, your marriage, and, at the very least, your sanity.”

—Dennis Prager, nationally syndicated radio talk show host, founder of Prager University, New York Times bestselling author

“Erica Komisar brings science, common sense, and humanity to bear on the question of how to raise children in our crazy time.”

—James Taranto, editor for The Wall Street Journal

“Erica Komisar’s highly readable overview of the challenges adolescents face in our modern world gives insight, encouragement, and hope to parents who struggle with their teens and young adult children. Her kind and gentle wisdom are palpable on each page and point families toward a plan for success.”

—Robert C. Hamilton, MD, pediatrician, podcast host, author of 7 Secrets of the Newborn

“Look no further! Erica has once again provided parents and educators with a vital playbook to help adolescents navigate the challenges of today’s world. If you have had difficulty communicating with or felt disconnected from the teens and pre-teens in your life, then this book is for you. Erica explores many important issues and offers realistic options for support.”

—Mary T. Cantwell, educator, learning issues specialist, founder of Enriched NYC

“Erica Komisar has vast experience with helping families navigate the ever constant and complex currents of life. She has a wonderful way of balancing kindness with pragmatism, providing what will no doubt be one of the most important resources for parenting.”

—Eric L. Motley, PhD, executive vice president and corporate secretary, The Aspen Institute

“Erica documents the science and the solutions needed for parents to help their adolescents overcome the unprecedented pressures they face today. What’s more is that her work is a necessary prescription for how to better shape public policy and schools and can reduce the many barriers to having healthy kids and families.”

—Jeanne Allen, founder and CEO, The Center for Education Reform

“If every parent put Erica’s gentle, apolitical, and commonsense guidance and education to use, America would be deluged with happy, healthy families. I cannot say enough about Erica’s work. Make it part of your parenting journey and you can’t go wrong.”

—Suzanne Venker, relationship and life coach, author, podcast host

“Many parents are confused and bewildered by what is happening in the lives of their teenagers. They want to help but feel utterly ill-equipped to do so. This book teaches parents that you can still make a difference and give your teen or young adult child a foundation of emotional security and stability that will help them weather the storms of adolescence. If you are a parent, grandparent, aunt or uncle, pick up this book and use it as a compass to guide you through these challenging times.”

—Baroness Philippa Stroud, CEO of the Legatum Institute, co-founder of the Center for Social Justice, member of the House of Lords

“Erica Komisar is one of today’s most important, provocative, and commonsense voices on crucial issues of parenting and relationships. Her insights and arguments always deserve serious attention.”

—Michael Medved, syndicated talk radio host and New York Times bestselling author

Many people might be drawn to Erica Komisar based on the brave stance she took in her book Being There, concerning the detrimental effects of mothers being separated from their children early in life. I listened to her on a number of more conservative podcasts, and found her very compelling and interesting. To critique the feminist, girl boss narrative in current times is a difficult thing to do, especially for a NY psychoanalyst. I thought that perhaps her book on adolescents would be equally insightful. I ended up throwing it in the trash.

The book starts out alright, but eventually she gets to the gender and sexuality chapter, and that pretty much invalidates everything else she has to say. He message to religious parents is to set aside all their old-fashioned, square notions of God's laws about sex and stop being so lame. COOL parents support their kids doing whatever feels good in the moment, and are up-to-date on all the made-up-five-seconds ago gender nonsense words. Parents that might worry about the state of their children's heart and soul need to ignore all that outdated mumbo jumbo. Worst of all, she seems to believe that a boy can become a girl and vice versa, and refers to them as such in the book. This fact, in my view, destroys any credibility she could possibly have on science-related subjects. I don't listen to "experts" who don't understand basic biological facts. Her stories in the book are nightmare fuel, yet the solutions rarely involve just acknowledging the problem for what it obviously is. One story is about a fourteen year old who had had sex with three different men and had already acquired a lifelong STD due to her parents' utter failure in raising her. Another is about a boy who had emotional problems and who had been raised by a nanny, since the two gay men who had custody of him were always travelling for their careers. The problem, in the author's view, has nothing to do with the fact that the boy has been denied both a mother and largely a father due to the men's selfishness. "Being There" makes it clear that a mother's love is central in a child's emotional development, but she completely throws that out the window when it comes to this particular ideology. It's not even mentioned as part of the equation.

Even though she has been on conservative podcasts, a NY psychoanalyst is ultimately just that - unable to take a stance against the lobotomies of our day (ie. drugging and mutilation of children). Her only input for the parents is to advise them to wait until the child is sixteen before going full board on the drugs and mutilations. You can decide whether you want to take parenting advice from someone who thinks this way, but for me, any potentially useful information in the book is overshadowed by it so much that it is effectively nullified. Religious parents need to stick to religious figures for sound parenting advice (there are many religious books on raising children - James Dobson is a great place to start). The secular world has nothing to offer but ever-increasing dysfunction and horror, fully supported and cheered on by credentialed charlatans.

In the chapter on sexuality the author misses a VERY LARGE problem facing children growing up in the device addiction/technology era. Pornography and its effects on children as they are exponentially becoming addicted and the relational violence that is becoming the norm in creating narcissistic abusive relationships around sexual manipulation. My daughter was loaned a book by a friend that was purchased from target that literally includes pornographic scenes of a teenage boy, manipulating the girl and having sex with him and it is normalized as part of “getting the guy.” The book even has the lovely target Circle sticker on the front for being on sale! It’s not just the Internet…. And it’s a culture that’s being established in our youth that is very disturbing and filling them with extreme amounts of anxiety and distrust. We have a generation of children that don’t believe in relationships anymore! It’s “just sex.”

Itself, this is a great book. I found it very informational and well written. I recommended it and bought another one for my sister who has children, because I think it has really important takeways that parents should read. But, I would say try buying it from another publisher. The first book I bought has awful binding and everytime I open it I have to hold it carefully so it doesn't break apart. The second one came with the spine having clustered spots on it, and I almost thought its been used previously. But insides were fine.
