I'm Working on It in Therapy: How to Get the Most out of Psychotherapy Paperback – June 9, 2015
Purchase options and add-ons
Millions of Americans will go to therapy this year, but veteran psychotherapist Gary Trosclair believes the vast majority of them will start the process with little to no sense of how to best use their sessions to achieve their goals. Recent research has identified effective client participation as one of the most crucial factors in successful therapy. What can one do to get the most out of their sessions to create lasting positive changes in their lives? What does it look like to work on it” in therapy?
Trosclair covers these points and more, combining cutting-edge scientific research with years of fascinating anecdotal evidence to create a guide that is as compelling as it is indispensable. It teaches readers how to take off their masks and be real with their therapists, how to deal with emotions that arise in session, how to continue their psychological work outside of sessions, how to know when it’s time to say goodbye to their therapists, and much more.
Whether you’re already in therapy and looking to make more out of each appointment, or you’re thinking of starting the process and want to go in with a game plan, I’m Working on It in Therapy will show you how you can make every session count towards becoming your best possible self.

Review
Gary Trosclair has the unique ability to translate complex psychological concepts into language that the layperson can easily grasp and understand. Aryeh Maidenbaum
This is a compelling introduction to the opportunities and responsibilities of psychotherapy for those considering the process. Full of illustrative imaginal material and illuminating views of the work, it opens the way and helps guide the seeker to consider many of the foundational issues that arise. Sylvia Pererra
Everyone in therapy or contemplating therapy should read this book. And even if you're not in or headed for therapy, you will learn something of value about why you behave the way you do and how you might feel better and live a happier life. Dr. Trosclair's writing is compelling and engaging, and his perspective grounded in care for his patients, his reading of popular culture, and his warm and affecting sense of humor. This is a book whose time has come. Journalist Angela Bonavoglia, MSW, author of Good Catholic Girls, and The Choices We Made.
Gary Trosclair has written a book that will answer many questions for people in therapy or considering therapy. In clear, measured, and compassionate language, he is both descriptive and prescriptive. He describes the experiences of therapy in broad enough terms to be recognizable to most of us who have been there, and he offers non-judgemental advice of how to gain the most benefit from therapy. Dr Trosclair's book will be an excellent, clarifying, and calming guide. Eric Siegel, Director and Chief Content Officer, New York Hall of Science
[O]ne of the great strengths of this book is its accessibility. The ability to bridge the distance between complex psychological concepts and the common-sense understanding of "ordinary people" is no small accomplishment. But this is what Trosclair succeeds at over and over again in the course of this book. Through the use of humor, cartoons and homely metaphors, he may charm even his most skeptical readers. Quadrant

- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2023Great book for anyone considering therapy.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2017Mr. Trosclair has done a nice job of balancing theory and examples that are understandable and helpful for anyone who has never been in therapy or who has been in therapy for a while. I'm currently in therapy, and there was a definite point where I could say "Yes, I get that" and another point where I could say "Yes, this could be what is to come." Very readable.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2015This is so much more than a book about therapy. It reads like a guidebook for understanding and reimagining yourself in an authentic way. If you don't happen to have a therapist, the author does a great job of explaining these concepts and providing examples of how to put them into practice.
As a fiction writer, I also found the insights in this book applicable to the work I do crafting characters and thinking about how we use stories—not just to entertain ourselves, but to define ourselves. The author's understanding and clear explanation of how we build a life through the stories we tell is proving useful when I sit down to write, and when I work at living my own life in the best way possible.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2017this is kind of a dumbed down version of what i was looking for. it's okay but geared for the average reader, which is maybe ninth grade level. still a good place to start and a good resource
- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2015An excellent, streamlined guide to helping clients in therapy best participate in a psychodynamic relationship, "I'm Working On It in Therapy" also helps readers understand just what the "work" is about, and what benefits longer-term therapy can have. The structure of the book, based on the 10 tips, makes it particularly reader-friendly while never seeming simplistic. This is a great resource for those already working with a therapist as well as those considering such work; the advice on such practical areas as choosing a therapist, how to view and handle the pay for the treatment, and how to end therapy is particularly useful. Mr. Trosclair has a trustworthy voice that expresses compassion, knowledge, and experience, as well as confidence in the rewards of deep work. Worth the read.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2015This exceptionally well-written book will be of value to anyone in psychotherapy, considering entering therapy, or simply curious about the process, as I am. The author introduces the reader to complex and fascinating ideas with clarity and verve, unobtrusively referencing the scholarly literature. Composite case studies drawn from the author's own practice provide an intimate glimpse of how the therapeutic process works. Most importantly, Dr. Trosclair describes specific tools that those in therapy--and others--can use to better understand the sources of behaviors and emotions they wish to change. The reader will find Dr. Trosclair a wise and empathetic guide to getting the most out of psychotherapy.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2015Some good tips, interesting read. I have found it useful.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2015Get Real, Channel the Flow of Emotion, Enough about Them, Don't Hold Back, Be Curious Not Judgmental, Carry your Fair Share and Only You Fair Share, What's Your Story?, It Ain't Necessarily So, Do Something, and Into the Fire. Here you have the skeleton of a hands-on step by step guide to the process of psychotherapy. Therapy can be a word that frightens us or maybe makes us feel overwhelmed. Gary Trosclair's book is clear, to the point, and easy to follow. I am a clinical social worker, and I very much recommend it to anyone considering therapy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Didn't tell me anything
Didn't tell me anything new or helpful. It felt contrived and overly simple. I don't actually know. It just need more words.

5.0 out of 5 stars I would definitely recommend this book
I have been in therapy for a while and was starting to struggling. After reading this book, there has been a huge improvement because firstly I realised that I wasn't the only one with the same problem and secondly because of the helpful solutions. I read the book all the way through and then went back to reread the chapters that were more relevant for me. I would definitely recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars I would highly recommend this book for anyone entering into Therapy as it enables you to understand the whole process
This book clearly outlines areas that can be explored within Therapy in order for you to gain the most from your time.
It is written well without using too much medical jargon that would usually put people off.
Giving the reader much food for thought and it demystifies the process.
