The Four Cornerstones of Victorinox
The various tools of a Swiss Army Knife are manufactured from high-quality steel with precisely tuned features that are essential for the particular application. The steel is tempered, annealed and polished to achieve the necessary hardness and provide optimum resistance to corrosion. Every knife embodies our four cornerstones: quality, functionality, innovation and iconic design.
Functionality
The Swiss Army Knife is the ultimate multi-tool. Whether you need a magnifying glass to read fine print or a metal saw to cut through iron, the Swiss Army knife has your back. In addition to a blade, these gadgets include various implements such as screwdrivers, bottle openers, and scissors.
Innovation is our Tradition
Innovation is our tradition and has been ever since we patented the first Swiss Army Knife in 1897. Here in the Swiss Knife Valley, we take lumps of molten steel and blend with generations of experience to forge knives which are loved all over the world. As we continue to find new ways to improve our knives we also strive to apply better solutions that meet new requirements and our customers unarticulated needs.
Iconic Design
In 1891 Karl Elsener, the owner of Victorinox, was under contract by the Swiss Army to produce a folding pocket knife to be suitable for use by soldiers for opening canned food and disassembling the Swiss service rifle. Elsener invented a special spring mechanism allowing him to attach the tools on both sides of the handle, using the same spring to hold the tools in place. This innovative design meant Elsener could put twice as many features on the knife, which included a blade, a second smaller cutting blade, reamer, can-opener, screwdriver, corkscrew, and wood fiber grips. The Swiss Army Knife is the most recognizable icon of utility and smart design, and the knives are still made exclusively in only two factories in Switzerland.

I’ve only had this particular knife for a few months, but so far I’ve been completely satisfied with the choice of tools. Sure there are more tools that I could use, this is not my first Swiss Army knife, I have quite a few, including one of the larger ones with lots of tools. Still, when you boil it down, certain tools get used more than others. Corkscrews and wood saws are rarely used everyday for me at least. Scissors too, though often used, are just too small for a sturdy implementation. Far better to have a good sharp knife, or two really, in this case a smaller one that works for higher leverage uses, box cutting, or any use that benefits a smaller blade to prevent inadvertent cuts. The longer knife shines for easy cutting of larger items, and doubles for a food knife.
As a comparison, I have a much smaller multi-tool. It is smaller that this knife by half, and it has more tools, but it fails In the sturdy catagory, the single knife is just too small, with a tiny spine, and a one side taper that makes sharpening difficult. That life sits in my knife drawer, waiting with all the others to find it’s use.
The color, black, is better for discrete pocket use. I like the red color, but for everyday pocket use, black is better.
Could there be more tools that would fit in this exactly right pocket size? Sure, the pressurized pen comes to mind. It has the toothpick and the tweezers that find quite a bit of daily use. Another would be the magnifier, but not if the width is larger.
With the Swiss sharpener tool used to give these blades a finish at the factory, the knives remain almos razor sharp, yet much sturdier.
Also, if it wouldn’t change the knife dimensions, a locking blade would be welcomed. Yet strangely I don’t miss the lock as much as I thought I would, pretty every use I’ve tasked these knife blades for, the lock wouldn’t have mattered.
If you need a larger knife, you would probably utilize a knife belt holster.Nothing wrong with this, but it doesn’t fit within the pocket cary Carry
At this point, this knife is the currently designated “Everyday Pocket Carry”.
The Tinker is the perfect size and has just the right tools for almost anything you come across that needs fixing. This is the first black one that I have owned and actual love it.
So instead of starting with a smaller SAK, and going larger, I started out with the largest of tools in the Swisstool, and each SAK got progressively smaller as I went along. How do I like this Tinker? Well, it is as well made as all my other Victorinox knifes and tools. But I find I am missing having the scissors and saw blade of the Fieldmaster. I miss the magnifying glass and the cork screw of the Swisschamp with the Fieldmaster. The Tinker has just the basics, a few blades, a bottle opener, a can opener, and a few screw drivers...BUT in reality, I really only used the long and short blade, the Phillips head and the bottle opener on any of my other SAKs and rarely used any other attachment. So... as of now, I am going to be carrying the Tinker every day, and over time will probably not miss the other tools of the Fieldmaster or Swisschamp...as I never really used them anyway. I doubt I will go any smaller than the Tinker as far as SAKs go. Still feel 'naked' without the other tools as in the Fieldmaster or Champ, but will give this Tinker a fair chance.
As to quality, well, I never EVER had a single quality issue with any Victorinox product, and I expect this to be equally as good over time. Oh, and by the way, if you missed it, there is a hole to put a straight pin in the scales, just under the phillipshead screw driver on both the Tinker as well as the Fieldmaster.
I don't understand why people are upset by the lack of scissors, I have never need out and said, "damn, I wish I had a pair of scissors". Not too mention it cuts down the weight and overall width of the thing. The tools are perfect on here. I use them all the time. The reamer comes in handy more than one would think. The bottle opener works great with a ferro rod. I took the keychain ring off because it gets caught on the inside of my pocket sometimes but other than that this thing is amazing. I am going to buy one for my father soon.

The Tinker is a Spartan with a Phillips screwdriver instead of a corkscrew. This is a great substitution in my opinion. The corkscrew can be useful for picking a knot say, or holding a mini screwdriver. But I've never actually needed a corkscrew for a cork...I find myself often using the screwdriver though. So that's great.
Also the Tinker/Spartans are just two layer knives, which makes them nice and slim in the pocket. Perfect for an Every Day Carry (EDC).
The black scales look really nice, though they do show finger prints. I enjoy the change from the classic red though.
To sum up, this knife is a great entry in the Swiss Army lineup. And it has all the build quality you'd expect from Victorinox.
