“This fast-paced read has everything you could want in a thriller: secret identities, a mysterious boss and a cat & mouse game that kept me guessing the whole way through.”—Reese Witherspoon

Evie Porter has everything a nice, Southern girl could want: a perfect, doting boyfriend, a house with a white picket fence and a garden, a fancy group of friends. The only catch: Evie Porter doesn’t exist.

The identity comes first: Evie Porter. Once she’s given a name and location by her mysterious boss Mr. Smith, she learns everything there is to know about the town and the people in it. Then the mark: Ryan Sumner. The last piece of the puzzle is the job.

Evie isn’t privy to Mr. Smith’s real identity, but she knows this job will be different. Ryan has gotten under her skin, and she’s starting to envision a different sort of life for herself. But Evie can’t make any mistakes--especially after what happened last time.

Because the one thing she’s worked her entire life to keep clean, the one identity she could always go back to—her real identity—just walked right into this town. Evie Porter must stay one step ahead of her past while making sure there’s still a future in front of her. The stakes couldn't be higher--but then, Evie has always liked a challenge...

First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston 5/5 ⭐️
First Lie Winsby Ashley Elston5/5 ⭐️Evie Porter is not who she says she is. She could be Lucca, Izzy, Mia, or Wendy. When working for the mysterious Mr. Smith, the identity always gets assigned first. Then she learns everything she needs to know about the target’s name and town. The last thing she is privy to is the job.Now in her new job, Evie needs to be on her best behavior. She cannot make another mistake like the last time. Ryan, her new target and boyfriend, is getting in her head though. He is making her believe that life could be different. Maybe she could have a normal life with him.Evie is thrown for a loop when her “real identity” shows up at the dinner party. Evie knows she is the real Lucca Marino but the resemblance to the fake one is uncanny. This has to be a test from Mr. Smith. While trying to figure out what to do with this imposter, Evie finds herself messed up in another sticky citation. An old job bleeds into this one and the lies get scrambled. Evie needs to protect her past while she prepares for the future. This was my first book by Ashley Elston, and she hooked me from the first chapter. My mind was racing with questions and possibilities throughout the entire book. The dual timelines and multiple identities create an addictive, wild ride. Evie or whatever you want to call her is one of the most morally gray main characters. Although even with my suspicions, I found myself cheering her on. In addition, the plot is so complex and intense you find yourself going over every detail with a fine-tooth comb. I highly recommend this thriller and can see why everyone is loving it!

Let me just say... I devoured this book in 2 days. That is fast for me. This book kept my interest from the first to the last page. There were twists and turns and surprises. If you like a good thriller with some suspense and mystery mixed in, then this is the book for you! I loved that this was not your ordinary mystery. Evie Porter is her new name with a new mission, but who is the man "Mr. Smith" calling the shots? I love that as the book progresses you learn more about Evie's past and how she began working for Mr. Smith. Evie is smart, determined and strong. She is the perfect character for this roller coaster ride. I highly recommend First Lie Wins to all my friends.

The novel, "First Lie Wins," by Ashley Elston, published in 2024 comes on like gangbusters as a fast-paced, live-feed action thriller from the very beginning to the grand finale. The main characters go on the non-stop thrill ride of their lives, one lasting a matter of years, instead of a mere 10-15 minutes at the state fair. There must be an easier way for Cinderella to make a decent living. She should have had her head examined for climbing aboard that absurdly treacherous carnival ride in the first place.
Her latest prospective employer basically wants her to "Do me a favor, walk a crooked mile and wear a wicked smile," in the metaphorical and metaphysical sense, if you know what I mean, even if he doesn't exactly come right out and explicitly say so, or spell it out in terms we can all understand. She has certainly put herself in a perilous bind and has few other options available to her, if any at all, at that particular moment.
"Have you ever worked in a soup kitchen before?" someone inquires, interrupting her train of thought. Hence, she is further incentivized to think quickly on her feet, as the sword of Damocles sways menacingly above her, dangling by a single thread, just about ready to drop.
When her single golden opportunity has suddenly been squashed and squandered away, if not severely limited and curtailed altogether, a benevolent-appearing benefactor emerges. He comes to her immediate rescue, just in the nick of time, and supports her magnificently throughout the potentially grim proceedings, considering her present predicament. She could have gone directly to jail had she been duly and properly arrested by the first police officers arriving on the scene. Had they not been flummoxed by the damsel in distress routine, and found out what really transpired, the prosecution might have wanted to lock her up and throw away the key then and there.
Truthfully, Cinderella's moral compass may have wavered and temporarily veered way off course, but at least for the time being she isn't completely bankrupt, destitute and cast out in the streets, without any hope whatsoever for a bright, promising future. To her credit, she does possess the uncanny ability to distinguish right from wrong. She is acutely aware of the vaguely ethical gray areas, it seems, and can react accordingly, but this admirable attribute doesn't necessarily constitute slowing her down much, or impeding the progress and rapid advancement she makes in her current line of employment. Undoubtedly, her life has taken a dramatic turn for the better, and it appears that she is indeed moving up on the totem pole. Her intention is to propel herself to the top of the organizational charts like a skyrocket, at least until she accelerates into a brick wall or bounces off the Plexi-glass ceiling.
Following the unlikelihood that the initial scenario actually plays out, pans out, or fizzles out, the members of an elite surveillance team working discretely in the background have a brief conversation among themselves before continuing to monitor the situation more closely and carefully. They have a big decision to make, work with her or against her. Up to this point, she has generally been unaware of their physical presence and proximity in the vicinity. But this is all about to change.
I'm guessing I can dispense with the elaborate diatribe at this point. The above generic synopsis as it stands should suffice sufficiently in whetting readers' appetites. As you may have already suspected, the novel involves a close-knit group of talented actors with a unique set of specialized skills and character traits. The plot evolves in a boldly dynamic, terrifically suspenseful manner, guaranteed to keep you perched on the edge of your seat throughout the story, wondering what happens next, as they cover a great deal of territory on their quest. Thus, the book represents the category of "most intriguing new fiction" quite well, revealing great imagination on the part of the author.

Good story but the wholesale flashbacks were annoying—along with some inexplicable plot points. For example, the protagonist, Evie Porter, so thoroughly charms her mark Ryan that he never asks to see her apartment prior to asking her to move in with him. She stages one for several days just for his benefit, but he doesn’t see it until she’s actually making the move to his place. I found it hard to believe that he never had any desire to see her residence—since the basis for their relationship was just a “meet cute” flat tire. Surely he would have taken her home at least one night before moving her into his big ol’ house, so the author almost lost me there, and the flashback chapters repeatedly took me out of the story. However, all the 5-star reviews, the Reese Witherspoon commendation, and movie deal show that my opinion is in the decided minority.

I thought this was so well written— a little romance a lot of espionage and all of her various guises made this a great read. I like it was set in the south at many familiar places. The characters are familiar and story moves along at a clip. It’s an easy read but the story is still complex which keeps you in the edge of your seat.

This book definitely has its twists & turns! I could read it within a few days, but in my opinion, the book switches between present day & the past way too frequently. And that’s probably the main reason I couldn’t read this in one sitting- it felt distracting to keep going back & forth so much. I think the story development is pretty good, and it’s exciting to watch everything unfold. The ending confused me a bit, and I wish the author had explained that just a little more, but I was able to find some explanations online that made sense. Overall, great read!

I picked up this book for my April book club and was very surprised by how good it was. I had not read anything by Ashley Elston before but the book came highly recommended so I was excited to dive in.

From the beginning, the author captivated me. As I began to read about Evie Porter, I became aware quickly that this book was going to be one I could not put down.

When we meet Evie she is with Ryan but as her story unfolds, we learn Evie has a lot of secrets and who she is isn't just in her name. I could this book being filled with so many twists and turns. If you ever watched the TV show The Blacklist this is what the book reminded e of. As no one was who you thought they were and just when you think you have put all the pieces together you turn the page only to learn you didn't.

The author did an amazing job of keeping the secrets tightly hidden till she wanted you to discover them. I also love that the characters were complex and each held their own story and secret. this book will keep you on the edge of your seat and keep you guessing till the end.

A very well-written story that had me absorbed into it. I am so excited to delve into it and discuss it in my book club.

This is a seriously addictive, impossible to put down thriller. It is complex-and I mean that in the best way, with an original plot that takes us into the depths of the criminal world. It is written in such a way that you are totally immersed in this world of corruption, money and murder and it keeps you constantly gripped-needing to read on.
From start to finish, there are so many twists and turns-that will keep you guessing throughout.

There are multiple timelines throughout the book from the perspective of Evie's past identities, therefore we get to see what events have happened to lead Evie to where she is currently.

This book is so incredibly clever, well thought out, very fast paced, with amazingly developed characters and an excellent bold female protagonist.

I loved the ending so much, while simple, it tied things up perfectly and I have to say I was a tad emotional. I didn't want the book to end, or to say goodbye to Evie-despite her flaws I couldn't help rooting for her and wanting her to thrive. I can't possibly say anymore without giving any spoilers, so I'll stop it here.

I highly, highly recommend this book if you're a thriller fan! 🩸
I will definitely look out for more of Ashley's work in the future. 💙
