Illustrated by New York Times best-selling artist Bea Jackson, this poignant story speaks to Lunella Lafayette's insecurities about her hair as School Picture Day approaches.

Sure, Lunella may be a genius Super Hero (Moon Girl), but when someone makes unkind comments about her hair, she questions whether she needs to change it for School Picture Day. She is, after all, still a 13-year-old girl. Ultimately, Lunella figures out the hairstyle that makes her feel like her best self for her school picture, but not before struggling with what that means for her.

Readers will explore and relate to themes of self-kindness, patience, identity, and acceptance in this charming and funny story.

Top review from the United States

I bought this book for my 5 year old who loves all things superhero. He loved it. Not only was the story fun, it talks about a serious issue that affects a lot of kids. Though my son doesn't share in those issues, it teaches empathy for the issue and self-love (which is important for kids and adults!) As someone who's seen the episode of Moon Girl this was based on, I thought the book captured the core message of it well (along with the wonderful silliness of Moon Girl).

The only thing I thought was off was that the book refers to the mom by her first name when in the show instead of referring to her as Lunella's mother. Given that one of the best parts of the Moon Girl show is the family's relationship, it was an odd choice to not emphasize it here. Still, it's a tiny issue for what is otherwise a great books for kids.
