2018 Eureka! Nonfiction Children's Book Honor Award, presented by the California Reading Association

When the rules kept Charlie Sifford from playing in the Professional Golf Association, he set out to change them.

Charlie Sifford loved golf, but in the 1930's only white people were allowed to play in the Professional Golf Association. Sifford had won plenty of Black tournaments, but he was determined to break the color barrier in the PGA. In 1960 he did, only to face discrimination from hotels that wouldn't rent him rooms and clubs that wouldn't let him use the same locker as the white players. But Sifford kept playing, becoming the first Black golfer to win a PGA tournament and eventually ranking among the greats in golf.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 1–3—Churnin details the life of Charlie Sifford, the first black man to compete in the Professional Golfers' Association of America (PGA).The narrative opens with a young Sifford playing a game of golf by himself at night ("If anyone saw him, he'd be in trouble"), before detailing Sifford's life as a caddie and how segregation forbid him from entering PGA tournaments. Inspired by a meeting with Jackie Robinson (who "didn't quit or lose his temper" when faced with racism), and with the help of lawyer Stanley Mosk, Sifford would eventually win a discrimination case against the PGA in 1960. The overturning of the PGA's Caucasians-Only clause allowed Sifford to go on to win the Greater Hartford Open in 1967, the Los Angeles open in 1969, and the Senior PGA Championship in 1975 to become known as the "Jackie Robinson of golf." Churnin provides a thoughtful overview of discrimination and how it impacted the world of sports through the 1960s. The illustrations are colorful and their size and placement vary throughout the story, providing a more dynamic reading experience and breaking up larger blocks of text. The characters especially come to life on the page with a range of expressions and emotions conveyed through the art. VERDICT A worthwhile addition to school libraries looking for sports-related picture book biographies.—Kelly Topita, Anne Arundel County Public Library, MD

This skillful author brings to life a quiet hero who through his passion and perseverance opened the doors for black children to learn and love the game of golf. It's easy to forget that many of the opportunities we take for granted were painfully fought for by civil rights pioneers who simply wanted to "take their shot." Churnin has mastered the craft of bringing these inspirational figures to life and encouraging her young readers to dream big and stay focused on the things they feel passionate about, even when the odds are against them. Charlie Sifford comes alive on the pages through the creative blend of dynamic narrative and charming period perfect illustrations. A fun read for young athletes who may not realize that the opportunities they take for granted requires continued commitment and support from people of good will. It's a winner!

This is the true story of an African-American boy, who faced societal discrimination against competing in golf because of his skin color. He is limited to practicing on the sly, with little or no hope of engaging in major PGA tournaments, but his love for golf persisted. Natural skill, hard work and perseverance keep him focused on his goals until he finally
makes the ultimate win in a PGA tour, opening the door for so many other golfers to compete. A heartwarming story
beautifully told and illustrated!

Added perfectly to my Black History Month! It is a great story about perseverance and achieving your dream despite obstacles. It was a great read aloud for my 2nd graders.

This biography tells the life story of Laura Wheeler Waring, a relatively unknown artist. She grew up in the late 19th century, a black female artist in an era predominated by white males. She wanted museums to show people who looked like her, and she wanted to grow up to have her art on those museum walls too. Against all odds, she fulfilled her dream. Author Nancy Churnin always delivers a biography to introduce historical figures to children in an entertaining as well as educational manner. This book is illustrated by Felica Marshall’s paintings which are painted in the same “beautiful shades of brown” that Wheeler loved. All the earth tones show the warmth of Wheeler’s life. I recommend this book for readers of any age who are interested in art and artists. As a great biography of an empowered Black woman, it would be great for Black History Month, or multicultural representation in a classroom library.
