Things We Never Got Over (Knockemout) Paperback – January 12, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
Bearded, bad-boy barber Knox prefers to live his life the way he takes his coffee: Alone. Unless you count his basset hound, Waylon.
Knox doesn’t tolerate drama, even when it comes in the form of a stranded runaway bride.
Naomi wasn’t just running away from her wedding. She was riding to the rescue of her estranged twin to Knockemout, Virginia, a rough-around-the-edges town where disputes are settled the old-fashioned way…with fists and beer. Usually in that order.
Too bad for Naomi her evil twin hasn’t changed at all. After helping herself to Naomi’s car and cash, Tina leaves her with something unexpected. The niece Naomi didn’t know she had. Now she’s stuck in town with no car, no job, no plan, and no home with an 11-year-old going on thirty to take care of.
There’s a reason Knox doesn’t do complications or high-maintenance women, especially not the romantic ones. But since Naomi’s life imploded right in front of him, the least he can do is help her out of her jam. And just as soon as she stops getting into new trouble he can leave her alone and get back to his peaceful, solitary life.
At least, that’s the plan until the trouble turns to real danger.

Runaway bride Naomi gets called by her twin sister, Tina, Who needs her help. All her life, Naomi has been helping her sister get out of tough situations, and this is no different. She goes to the town she’s been living in and is greeted by harsh words, horrible whispers, and bad hospitality. She’s quick to defend herself and clarify that she’s not her twin sister, but the grumpiest, hottest of them all basically kicks her out. Too bad she finds him hot- his manners are the worst of the bunch.
Knox’s quick to try to rectify his mistake- by becoming protective of Naomi. Even though he aids Naomi when she needs it, he’s still a grump. Hiding behind his icy exterior is a man that’s been hurt by life, and a man that is possessive and jealous of any other man that gets near Naomi 😅. He wants her, but he doesn’t want a commitment. Naomi isn’t looking for a relationship- she literally just left her ex-fiancé the day of her wedding, but she can’t help but swoon at all the attentiveness Knox gives her.
The push/pull between them was delicious. I loved how j/p Knox got whenever anyone with testosterone got near Naomi, especially when his handsome brother becomes a little too nice to Naomi 😈. If Knox could’ve marked his territory, he would’ve. Naomi has an 11 year-old niece to take care of, and a grumpy, tall 43 year-old man that can’t stop showing her how much he wants her.
The smexxy times were scrumptious. Since the opening chapter, there was electricity and a raw, visceral connection between Knox and Naomi. Once we get to 43%, all bets off all… as well as any clothing 🔥🥵. Knox does not shy away from getting what he wants… and he takes every opportunity to claim his property 😉😅. That first scene when he gets home from the hospital was 🔥🔥🔥 (even though I felt second-hand embarrassment the next morning lol). And when he defends her and takes her back to his office to show her how important she is? Swooooon but also 🥵.
Yeah, the ending was on the predictable side, but you know what? I don’t even care lol. I was glued to the pages, trying to see what was going to happen next.
And the side characters were all amazing!! I need all of their books. I KNOW we need to get one with Sloane and Lucian 👀 because their chemistry was 🔥. And I also was side eyeing Lina… with maybe Knox’s brother Nash 👀lol. Shoot- I’ll even take one with Stef (Naomi’s bff), maybe with Jeremiah 👀.
The town was supportive and dreamy. Gah. I love how much they back up Naomi when Knox messed up 😅😂😈. She might be new in town, but they all showed her love.
I loved it! I can’t wait to read more from this series!
While the story initially unfolded at a leisurely pace, the depth of character development was truly engaging. Knox's emotional vulnerability, his struggle to resist his feelings for Naomi, and the introduction of her niece Waylon, all contributed to a heartwarming narrative that was hard to resist.
I am excited to read the other two books in the series.
Reasons I enjoyed this book:
Easy-to-read, Entertaining, Funny, Happily Ever After, Twisted, Wonderful characters
You'll laugh, you'll get tears in your eyes - both happy tears and poignant.
There's intrigue, a mystery of sorts, supportive and dysfunctional family relationship. Small town friendship and kinship at it's finest. There isn't romance - not precisely - but there is passion, and there's all kinds of love going on. Plus, it's steamy as all get out.
Makes me wish I was a character in Knockemout, so Lucy could write me a HEA.
Guaranteed, this won't be the last time I read this book. If you love steamy contemporary fiction, this is a shining example.
I have stars in my eyes, I think Ms. Score is my new best author,
Can’t even imagine what book two will deliver.
Such a fun read. Pick it Up already!
Age Rating: 18+
Pros:
Loveable characters
Comforting Read
Great escape (I would so live in this town if I could)
It made me really want to read the other books in the series
Had me feeling all the emotions!
Cons:
Very unrealistic (I don't think that's too much of a bad thing, though...)
The ending felt slightly rushed
Sometimes cringey dialogue
This book was honestly such a good romance! I loved how unrealistic and cheesy it was at times and it proved to be such a fun escape. I don't think it's peak quality but I can't doubt or complain about how much I enjoyed reading it. I try to base reviews off of how the book made me feel while also being realistic about how good of quality the book objectively is.
Make sure that going into it, you know that this is supposed to be an unrealistic, feel-good book. Now there are some emotional and intense scenes in it but that just makes it all the more intriguing! I honestly was on the edge of my seat with how invested I was in these characters. A couple of them felt like cliche characters but Lucy Score still managed to make them interesting and enjoyable. The situations she came up with just made me laugh and they did a good job of showing off the characters and how they behave.
One thing I did find annoying, however, was how back and forth Knox was with things. And I know that's the point of things... man says he doesn't care or want to help and yet still does anyway even though he wants not commitment. But I felt it was slightly too constant and obvious. That didn't stop it from making me slightly giddy every time though...
Honestly, if you know the purpose behind the book and what you're signing up for, this is an amazing storyline. I'm super excited to read the rest of the Knockemout books because I'm WAY too invested in this small town!

Sure, The FMC may have her moments of annoyingness and drama - but hey, who doesn't in a romance novel? Naomi, the Good Twin extraordinaire, struggles with putting others' happiness before her own and it's her main flaw. That and her dependence on coffee! Although I didn't love Naomi as a character, understanding her need to be the "good child" and her heart of gold kept me rooting for her.
Now, let's talk about our leading man, Knox - cue the heart eyes! I finally get the whole "book boyfriend" craze now. He's undeniably flawed, dealing with some serious Daddy issues, yet somehow still manages to steal hearts. I am smitten with that man, he's totally swoon-worthy. While many reviews criticize Knox, I found his character compelling. He wasn't the flawless small-town hero; he battled his own demons throughout the entire story. He also wasn't miraculously fixed the moment he met Naomi. His brother Nash briefly stole the spotlight as my book crush for a moment though and I'm excited to read his story in Things We Hide from the Light.
And who could forget the adorable Waylay?
"It's okay. You don't have to pretend. Aunt Naomi 'n me are used to people not wanting us."
My heart shattered into a million pieces during that moment. While Waylay may have seemed a tad wise beyond her years at moments, she added a sprinkle of magic to the story. I was ready to jump into the pages and shield her alongside Naomi and Knox.
This book was like a delicious mix of all the best romance tropes - mistaken identities, enemies-to-lovers, forced proximity, fake dating, good girl/bad boy, and the classic grumpy x sunshine, all woven together smoothly. I liked that while Knox may be a millionaire, the story doesn't dive too deep into the typical millionaire romance theme. It's just a detail rather than the main plot device.
I can’t wait to read the rest of the Knockemout series - especially to find out the history between Sloane & Lucian in Things We Left Behind!
Ok, this book took me longer than usual. But I kept waiting until I had no distractions to read it!
I laughed super hard, I loved the town, the secondary characters and I already have a crush on Nash & Lucien.
The girl gang is aspirational and I wanna work in the Honky Tonk, with the best girl mates ever.
Knox is a layered character, with the perfect balance of original and different background but with the sense of reality. Not OTT, making it eye-rolling incredible but in a mix that actually makes sense.
Naomi is also very interesting, yet super funny and with the best BFF in the world. Also, her Sloane addition was cool.
Anyway, jumping straight into the next one!
The author's prose is beautifully crafted, evoking a range of emotions that linger long after the final page is turned. Each character is intricately developed, with their own struggles and triumphs that readers can easily relate to. The narrative effortlessly weaves together multiple storylines, keeping the reader engaged and invested throughout.
What truly sets this book apart is its raw honesty. The author fearlessly explores the darker aspects of human nature, tackling themes of heartbreak, betrayal, and forgiveness with a refreshing authenticity. Through the highs and lows of the characters' journeys, readers are reminded of the universal truths that bind us all together.
"Things We Never Got Over" is a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit. It's a book that will make you laugh, cry, and ultimately, reflect on the depth of the human experience. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a compelling read that will stay with them long after they've finished the last chapter.
