Editorial Reviews

Review

“For thirty years, I’ve experienced a series of unexpected and traumatic losses. One after the other, they turned my life upside down. It was only through experiencing grief—not avoiding it—that I finally discovered healing and new hope. But I needed friends and guides to walk through it with me. Dorina Gilmore and her book Breathing Through Grief are two such friends. With gentleness, they will hold your hand through a season you never wanted.”—Michele Cushatt, author of A Faith That Will Not Fail: 10 Practices to Build Up Your Faith When Your World Is Falling Apart

Breathing Through Grief is the best devotional journal I’ve read to help navigate the sorrow of loss with hope. Dorina gives us a beautiful tool, steeped in scripture, to unpack the emotions, struggles, and questions that come in grief. This book would make a meaningful gift for anyone walking through the pain of grief.”—Lisa Appelo, author of Life Can Be Good Again: Putting Your World Back Together After It All Falls Apart

Breathing Through Grief offers a well of serenity in the bewildering desert of crushing loss. Like a bright light in the darkness, it will be a faithful companion not only for grievers but also for those who desire to weep with those who weep and bless all who mourn.”—Marcie Alvis Walker, author of Everybody Come Alive

Breathing Through Grief makes space for grievers to reflect, honor, grieve, and just breathe. With personal stories, biblical insight, relevant scriptures, and prayers, Dorina provides a road map for the journey of grief. With gracious pauses along the way, Breathing Through Grief is a necessary resource for every grieving heart.”—Natasha Smith, author of Can You Just Sit with Me? Healthy Grieving for the Losses of Life

 “
Breathing Through Grief is a gentle and practical guide for mourners. Dorina writes with the hard-won wisdom of a fellow griever, making space for our sorrow but also for our hope.”—Amanda Held Opelt, songwriter and author of A Hole in the World: Finding Hope in Rituals of Grief and Healing

“In
Breathing Through Grief, Dorina gently makes room to emotionally and practically sort out the overwhelming pain of loss. When the death of a loved one leaves us feeling unable even to breathe, this book points us straight back to our very Breath of Life.”—Danita Jenae, author of When Mountains Crumble: Rebuilding Your Life After Losing Someone You Love

Breathing Through Grief is beautifully written and incredibly practical. The pages are thoughtfully filled with solid teaching from scripture, space to honestly process, helpful perspective, and, ultimately, hope. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is in a season of loss and for those who may have experienced an especially painful time in the past. The words found in these pages will be a balm for those who are hurting.”—Vivian Mabuni, national speaker, podcast host, Bible teacher, and author of Open Hands, Willing Heart

I haven't been through much grief myself, but want to understand it for the future and to help others who are going through it. This book has helped me to understand all about grief and healthy ways to embrace it. I've used what I've learned to help encourage others in my workplace.

I'm really glad there is a book like this. When grief hits, we sometimes forget everything we know to do and we need someone to help us catch our breath again. This resource is rich with validating and insightful remembrances from the author's own excruciating loss of her husband and how she navigated the journey with her three daughters. It's a highly-usable manual that I am not only recommending for several friends and people I serve (I'm a vocational spiritual director) who've recently experienced sudden losses, but is something I'm actually buying for them. It makes a really sweet and helpful gift to bring along with a meal or to send on its own as an expression of care. Along with the devotional reflections, Gilmore-Young offers a treasure trove of soothing practices that tend to spiritual needs and nervous system needs in a time of crisis. The author's willingness to dig deep into the realities of her own grieving process and to explore a breadth of experiences including irritation, humor, and honor/celebration make this book so accessible and practical. It's also beautifully designed. This is a workbook I'll continue to use on my own and share with others who need a good framework to process the pain of loss.

After my FIL passed away, I was at such a loss as to what to do with my grief. I am beyond grateful that Dorina takes the reader by the hand and with love, compassion, and grace, walks her through the grief journey. Journaling the prompts has brought to light so much of what was hidden beneath the surface. Thank you, Dorina.

I bought this for a friend who is going through a season of deep grief. The contents look very helpful .. praying this brings her comfort in her loss.
The book was in the plastic envelope, but the package was left by my car in the driveway ... when we found it the packaging was soaking wet - but thankfully the book was not damaged. Not sure why it wasn't left in our mail-box or even by the front door?

I love this book. It gives practical advice on how to walk through grief from someone who has been there. Having lost my husband 2 months ago, this book is a warm welcome to sit read and journal thoughts. It also feels like a friend is there with me. Gave this book to a friend who lost her daughter and hope she feels the same.
