The Shield and Axe (The Viking Saga Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 197 ratings

Since the day I was born, my whole life has been decided for me. I’m nothing but a Saxon bargaining token, a political tool for my father. The Norsemen invaded our lands and burned villages to the ground, killing men, women and children alike. My hand in marriage was an exchange for peace. However, the seemingly impossible choice of who to wed is mine to make.

As my heart is torn between two men, an onset of attacks tear the village apart, causing discord and chaos amongst the ranks of those in power. To secure my safety amongst their people, I must make my choice. Will it be the charming, but dangerous warrior? Or the serious and loyal son of the Jarl? My life is turned upside down as my past and my future worlds collide.

I got an advanced ARC ebook of this for an honest review.
I've honestly never really been into books about the Norse God's or that type of mythology, BUT when I read what it was about and the plot, I just had to pick it up, so I did. I also finished it in a day. Sad. Because this book was amazing, I wish I had of taken my time and read it over multiple days so I could just let it settle in my brain. Sadly I didn't but there is always book 2.
I rated it a 4 only because the a few chapters had repeate paragraphs, but that's what editing is for so I'm sure that will be fixed.
The storyline was very well done, the character building was just *chefs kiss*. World building was also very good, I'm a firm believer in rereading books and this is definitely one I'd reread once they are all out.
All in all it was a very well written book!

This book took a bit to capture me. I normally take a bit to get into a book since you’re not invested in the people yet and the intake of info is immense but I was completely enthralled by the story once it started up. Elwyna is a tough cookie, she was raised to be weak and to follow man’s word. She had other ideas. After seeing what life could be like with the ‘heathens’, she could only look forward to living with them and eventually marry one. Unlike her Saxon people, the Norsemen treated women with respect and worshipped them as the life givers that they are.

She meets Trygve and Thorsten when she first visits and is smitten with them from the getgo. When she comes of age, she moves to live with the norsemen and she starts to become her own person. She gets stronger and stronger, pushing herself to continue living with the freedom she now has.

She had great character development. Going from behaving ‘properly’ and never speaking her thoughts to doing and saying what she wants. She finds herself throughout this book and it’s a sight to be seen.

Yes, this story only has two guys, Trygve and Thorsten so as of now, it’s only mmf but there’s a possibility of a new guy to be added (and I hope he is!) mmfm or mmmf? I guess we’ll find out in the next book!

The story itself really comes to fruition at around 70%, that’s when you sit there in awe and just go for the magical ride to the end. The way this ends, it has me going crazy thinking that I need to wait for the next book.

As a fellow Canadian, it’s exciting seeing MK Robert create such a wonderful piece of work. I wasn’t completely sold on this book right away as I’ve never read a norsemen/Viking book but I was proven wrong and am so glad to say I was. At times, I felt like I was actually watching The Vikings on tv. This only helped me visualize everything which is great since I don’t do well taking a description and painting my own picture in my head. This book is heavy on descriptions so anything helps me.

I will be here, waiting on the next book… that cliffhanger, I need to know what happens!

5.0 out of 5 stars Steamy Vikings Romance!!

The Shield and Axe is the first book in The Vikings Saga by M.K. Robert, and it does not disappoint. If you're a fan of Vikings and Norse mythology, as well as spicy romance, you'll want to check out this series.

Elwyna is promised to the Vikings at a young age, set up by her father as a way to keep the peace between their people. When she becomes of age and moves into the Viking settlement with her lady's maid, Cwen, she learns that the lives of the Norsemen are vastly different than the life she had been living. She had been made to believe that women were supposed to be submissive creatures, but with the help of the Norsemen and women she's living with, she learns that she is more than that.

Trygve, aka my newest book boyfriend, and Thorsen, help to empower Elwyna, in more ways than one....and it gets hot along the way. The character development in Elwyna throughout the book was a joy to read. It shows that despite how you grow up, you can always change your future.

There were so many twists and turns, as well as a cliffhanger that left me with so many questions! I'm hooked and can't wait to see what happens next!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic story, -1 star for the errors

This story was enthralling and enjoyable. The characters are fantastic. I love characters who have been abused into being small and qhiequiet, then growing into confident, strong warriors who for themselves and for the good of others.
The reason I did not give 5 stars is because there are a crazy amount of errors throughout the book. Character descriptions are inconsistent, one in particular changing hair and eye color in the middle of the story, pronouns, names in context. It felt like the writer would firget what they were writing. There are editing errors of punctuation, and even a place where a sentence begins and then is cut off with a new sentence.

If not for those errors, I would give a full 5 stars. And I do still recommend it. Push through the mishaps and you have a great story of strength and overcoming deep traumas. I will read the 2nd book as well.

3.0 out of 5 stars entertaining but inconsistent

Decent, entertaining read. The characters were likable and I enjoyed the story. I felt like the wording wasn’t consistent and the author tried to force some things. I’m all for praise kink but during those times, I’m not sure “sir” is believable. It was very irresponsible of the yarl and his right hand man to leave their village just to protect Elwyna.

Kudos for the pronunciations.

The Shield and Axe (The Vikings Saga #1)

by M.K. Robert (Goodreads Author)

Read

I. Am. Obsessed.

Let me preface this by saying that I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review and thats what I'm going to give you.

Elwyn. Elwyn, Elwyn, Elwyn... We start off the story following our main character, a sweet but timid, fearful, meek, little Saxon girl as she travels to the Norse where her father is arranging her future marriage to one of the Norse men so that by their marriage peace is ensured for her people. We quickly skip forward in time to meet her once more as a grown, albeit sheltered and naive, woman. I adored the growth of Elwyn as she found her place among the Norse. After deciding she had lived in fear and weakness long enough, having been severely abused by her father for her entire life up until leaving him and finding freedom with the vikings, she decides to pursue training as a shield maiden. Eleyn is frequently described as curvy with thick thighs and ample breasts and butt, but that doesn't mean she isn't strong and athletic. I'm not 100% sure if she's just curvy and thick or if she's outright mid/plus size, but she definitely is not your typical thin, tall, model-esque main character.

Elwyn is approached by many of the men in an effort to court her for lack of better words, trying to get her to choose them. Elwyn however is a lot more concerned with learning to fight and defend herself, growing into a strong and brave woman. None who approach her catch her interest...

Except.. Laughing, mischievous, trickster Trygve who makes me her smile and feel things she doesn't understand and his best friend, engaged son of the Jarl, serious and steady Thorsten. These two share everything. Mead, food, laughter, battle... And women. Elwyn has been so sheltered that up until the carriage ride from her Saxon home to her new home in the Norse village, she didnt even know what sex was. Coming across Trygve and Thorsten sharing a woman in the woods ignites a desire in her that cannot be quenched.

More important than her search for a husband is the search for who is amassing an army and using that army to slaughter the surrounding norse villages and the mystery of why. Even more mysterious than the random and devastating attacks is the vision she receives by the gods prophesying her future and the future of the pagans. Plot twists, mysteries, changing fates, all sort of tensions and drama abound.

Will they find out who is slaughtering her new people? Who will she choose to stand by her side in this life and in the next? Will she be strong enough to withstand what is to come? Can she decipher the prophesy of the gods in time? Only one way to find out...

Holy moly, this book was hot, I am going to need a cold shower right now. MK Robert has done an amazing job with this MMF Viking era romance. Elwyna has been promised to be married off to a Norsemen in order to broker peace between them & her people, the Saxons. It might appear that she is being sold off to bring peace, but she is actually receiving a rare gift for a Saxon woman, the ability to choose and the freedom that comes with it. The Northmen may be heathens, but things are not very rosy with the Saxons either.

I love both of her love interest Trygve & Thorsten. They both bring out a different side of Elwyna, helping her to grow into the woman she is becoming.

I could not put this book down & I really need answers after that ending. And that teaser for book 2! Gimmie, Gimmie, Gimmie! I cant wait to see where this story goes next!
