- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2023"“Politics for People Who Hate Politics” stands out as a recommended read for Christians actively involved in politics or aspiring to deepen their engagement. It provides guidance for navigating the complexities of this controversial topic with an emphasis on fostering unity and honor rather than division. In a political landscape often devoid of a value for vulnerability, the author impressively draws from her personal experiences to illustrate the very principles she encourages readers to embrace. As someone who identifies as a moderate and maintains friendships with individuals strongly aligned with both political spectrums, it's worth noting that the book leans toward conservative perspectives at times. Nevertheless, the underlying principles conveyed transcend political affiliations, making it a valuable resource to Christians regardless of where one falls on the political spectrum.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2023This book should be required reading for all of humanity heading into each election season. (No one wants to repeat the political angst and discord of 2020!)
So much of the content I see on social media, in books, and podcasts focuses on the "WHAT" of politics (divisive political issues, agendas, and parties). Expecting "just another book about broken politics," I was surprised to discover that the author masterfully avoids weighing in on specific policies, parties, or politicians. Instead, she focuses purely on "HOW" we can engage in politics with greater respect and love--without compromising our deeply held convictions.
I loved the candid stories and humor which made for a light read on a typically heavy subject. It's a book that's easy to recommend and gift to friends who hate when I bring up politics (or those who love it but don't seem to know how to "agree to disagree" with civility). In fact, I ordered 3 extra copies as gifts!
In a previous role as Director of Communications of a large, international church with a diverse (racially, ethnically, politically, and spiritually) following, I am incredibly particular about how messaging affects different groups of people. This is one of the VERY few books on politics that I have no concern with pastors recommending from the pulpit. It benefits everyone. Apathetic or (overly) zealous. Left- or right-leaning. The book provides gentle correction, practical insights, and an invitation for all to engage in politics in a way that we'd be proud for our children to observe and emulate.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2023Denise has brilliantly woven intellect, sound biblical theology, experiential wisdom, and unwavering devotion to Jesus Christ in a compelling narrative that redefines the role of faith in politics. In a time marked by division, her work stands as a beacon of hope, illustrating how faith can pave the way for peace and unity. A must-read for those seeking a positive and uplifting perspective on navigating the intersection of faith and politics.
The practical tools for application, reflection questions, and prayer in every chapter not only serves to cause us to self-reflect on current attitudes and divisive behaviors but guarantees by inviting the mighty power of the Holy Spirit into our book study renewed minds and transformed hearts. Denise respectfully, honorably, and lovingly walks out what Jesus modeled for us in the Scriptures to positively impact our nation and the world at large.
No matter what your political affiliation, we are reminded that first and foremost, we identify as One Body in Christ. We are all parts of the same and cannot function without each other.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2024"Politics for People Who Hate Politics" by Denise Gitsham is a refreshing and insightful guide that demystifies the complex world of politics. With wit and clarity, Gitsham empowers readers to engage in the political process without feeling overwhelmed or disillusioned. A must-read for anyone seeking to become an informed and active citizen.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2023This book is smart, thoughtful, and introspective: three things missing from most modern discourse. Denise doesn’t just tell us what she thinks, she shares her own growth from idealistic young politico to experienced, empathetic adult. By the end you will have a roadmap for approaching politics and your “political enemies” with an open heart and humility. Back away from Facebook and start talking to people again.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2023Denise is wonderful, intelligent, brilliant and good hearted! Much needed topic for us as a country . People are hungry for this. We have to be able to disagree with about being disagreeable. Denise hit it on the head when she says United we stand. Thank you for doing this Denise!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2023I am so thankful for this book. As someone to whom this book was written, a self-proclaimed politics-hater, I thought the first section of the book was more pointed towards people who are involved in politics. Her message was what politics should look like as a follower of Jesus. I really enjoyed it thinking many times “yes, exactly! I hope all of my political loving friends read this” And then I got to the section when Denise specifically spoke to why my avoidance of politics is not helpful as a follower of Jesus and I realized how necessary the entire first section was. I actually trusted her heart. I trusted her commitment to Jesus and how he can be followed and magnified even in politics. And her exhortation for me to stop avoiding it, actually convicted me and gave me a desire to lean in rather than away.
Highly, highly recommend.
