We have an 11 months old, so the gate was overdue for at least a month as she starts going everywhere and likes to climb those stairs.
The gate comes with the necessary hardware (but not for unique setups, like ours), and in our case we got 2 sets of hardware, but only used one (and have plenty of spacers left).
The base mount of the gate is the easiest to install, and this is where you should begin. Just requires a Phillips screwdriver.
The top mount of the gate. There was no stud in the wall, so I just used heavier duty drywall anchors. The ones provided are not heavy enough for long term use just in my opinion. What is excellent is that plenty of spacers are provided to compensate for the gap created by baseboard below, and they have 4 holes in them. Just remember to use the outside holes first, when attaching the spacers, and then the inside as they are used to attach the actual mount for the gate attachment.
Base catching mount was second easiest to install in our situation as it simply required 2 screws and a driver. I had to reposition mine, because of the torque I used and one of screws broke off. The stair post I was attaching to is also made from oak, which is a very hard wood.
Top catching mount was easy to install, but took most time to come up with the right custom made spacer for the mount. See pictures. I made a spacer out of plywood that was about 3/4" thick, cut it at an angle to compensate for the slope in the vertical oak post, used 1/2" screws and some glue (obviously both not provided). Then I used 10" long zip ties (8" long were too short for our set up), and finally drilled out a hole on the back of the post and used 1 long screw there (again, obviously not provided) to fix the mount in place from rotation.
Overall, in my opinion, this is an excellent sturdy gate, and can be installed anywhere if you have right tools.

It should be noted, this is not a hard gate. While it is sturdy material, I wouldn't recommend allowing kids to lean on, hold on to, hit, etc.
One tiny flaw: the included wall anchors. They are really flimsy, and I was surprised that for a protective gate, they wouldn't think to include even slightly stronger ones. Just a few hammer hits to the anchor in a snug hole will bend it. They are usable, but harder to install in wood or steel (which might be common areas if you put by stairs). I had extra plastic anchors in my toolbox that did the job just fine. If you have extra anchors or are willing to spend $2 at a home improvement store, I'd recommend doing so.
Basic handy skills are recommended, and if you can workaround the flimsy anchors, I highly recommend the gate.

Pros: Secure when locked. Relatively straight forward install. Looks nice (enough). Has not resulted in the baby falling down staircase.
Cons: We have two of this same gate, one install was easy, without any issues. The second, because of the way the stairs are and where the baseboard is, was a big undertaking. That's not the fault of the gate per se, but the issue was the latch needs to be facing a certain way and you have to have several spacers to get the right size to match the baseboard. The end result of this is that 1) the latch sticks out into the walkway 3-4 inches, and 2) the screws that came with the gate weren't long enough. I have a bucket full of screws, so no problem for me there, but I did end up punching extra holes in the wall and had to move the whole thing over. The other con is that one person in our house who I won't name *cough mother-in-law cough*, can't work the lock - it's a little too delicate to get into the unlocked position for her, umm, I mean that person...
Overall, good product, just a few items that were a bit inconvenient that probably would not even come up for most people.
