The "Precious Gem" in this title is a child who very nearly died at birth. What kept her alive was the dogged diligence of her devoted parents, supported by family, friends, dedicated doctors, and Gemma's truly extraordinary spirit. No one, adult or child, should have to go through such a rollercoaster. As the author's father says very early on, it would be understandable if they "let go". But Debbie and Michael Deutschmann persisted as long as Gemma's will to live burned bright. Debbie's telling of their story is detailed, honest, and spellbinding. She turns what was often a nightmare into a tale of suspense, interwoven with family drama, uplifted by a truly inspirational love for Gemma -- and from her.
