The idea behind Life of Fred is that if students have an enjoyable experience and have fun doing their math, they will remember it and use it and have a good taste in their math about the whole subject. The sub-title on each of his math books is "As Serious As it Needs to Be". And that is just the point: math doesn't need to be horrid and dry. This is math-just as serious as it needs to be-and I can tell you from Louisa's smiles and chuckles, that's not very serious at all! As a bonus, these books are very low priced compared to any other math books on the market. (Compare to Saxon at $50-70). If you have a creative child who is languishing on traditional math programs, try Life of Fred! Math, As Serious As it Needs to Be! If you know your math facts (addition and multiplication) and you can read well, then the next step is to get to know Fred! Beware: This is not a traditional math book. This is a child-directed course. The student reads the adventure story, does the math problems that occur as a natural part of the story, and checks their answers (the solutions are right there for the looking.) And learns to love math in the process! You will not get the detailed formula explanations that you get in a traditional math book. I am still amazed that kids can read the story and learn the concepts, but they do!

We have been homeschooling for 3 years now, and math is a real struggle for one of my children. We've tried ALL SORTS of different math curricula, (worksheets, online, lecture/lesson) all ending in lots of struggles and tears. He's an avid reader, very imaginative, and HATES the redundancy and dry approach of math bookwork and worksheets. He has become discouraged because he feels "stupid at math". I bought Life of Fred as sort of a last resort. The moment the book was delivered, he opened it and started reading it (by choice!) and working through the math practice problems.

My reluctant math child LOVES the story of FRED. For our daily math, I will have him read me a chapter out load, and then I will ask him the practice questions. He writes the problems/answers out on a small whiteboard, and then I'll check his work. We'll go over and correct any mistakes (although, he doesn't get many errors). This approach to math has really helped him to develop a love for math! I love that Life of Fred series goes all the way from Elementary math through college math! (I have another child who does not use Life of Fred as his primary math curriculum. He is great with math, but is a struggling reader and writer. For him, he likes the cut-and-dry approach of worksheets, quickly working through his math bookwork for the day.)

If you have a child who is a fan of Calvin & Hobbs stories, they will enjoy Life of Fred. The story is witty and engaging, and presents math in a practical way. It also overlaps with different other subject matter such as history, art, science, technology, life skills. You could even read this to children as a bedtime story. It's so funny.

If you have a child struggling with math, see if Life of Fred works for them. At first glance, it seems simple. If a child works through a chapter a day, they will read three pages of story, and have 5-10 practice questions. It seems like too little, but it isn't. After changing gears and working through Life of Fred, my son also became much quicker and more accurate at his multiplication facts from 0-12. ALSO, no more tears when we sit down to work on math. I'm grateful for this approach and how it connects with my son.

I love all of these math books. My daughter sometimes even reads them for fun. We're working on building the collection! We use this along with Horizons for home school. These could even be fun for kids in public school to help them review their math in a fun way and show them every day uses for math.
I like how Life of Fred gives kids glimpses into the future of math, things they will be learning in high school or college, so when they do reach that point, it looks somewhat familiar to them.
