Lots of information
5 Stars
Lots of information
There is a lot of useful information in this book. Has 113 things to look through on the table of contents. It can sometimes to be hard to find what your looking for in the table of contents when in a rush but since it had so much useful information, I give it 5 stars. My only recommendation would be have larger categories, such as which party of the body the sensory simulation is for to make it easier to get to things even faster. I think this would be good for all kids but especially useful for any kids with sensory aversions or are sensory seekers

As an OT I love this book. Sometimes you just need a quick guide or cheat sheet to quickly refer to and this is great. Giving you suggestions to try for each sensory behavior. 10/10 would recommend

I have recently been sent down the path of autism evaluations and early intervention with speech therapy and OT’s with my 2 year old. It was clear to me that he was having sensory issues. He struggles with bathing, messy hands are an issue, brushing his teeth… lots of different things as well. I didn’t know where to begin researching sensory issues and what I can best do to help my child. I first googled and that was overwhelming. I then went to Amazon and ordered 5 books. This specific book is by far superior to the rest with helping me help him. It gives you certain things that may trigger your child and tips to help with them and how to catch them before they happen sort of. It also helped me narrow down the phrase tactile defensiveness which is what pretty much all the sensory issues he had would state that it was some sort of tactile issue.
The other books I ordered pretty much just explained what social processing disorder is and how the brain is misfiring or whatever, and honestly they scared the crap out of me and we’re quite depressing to read. This book though. This book gives me hope and helps me to help my baby.

I'm compiling strategies to work with my sensory seeking son.

Pros:
I love that the author describes each sensory signal. I helps to understand what part of my child is disregulated. Information is presented with a short explanation and then a list of strategies to implement.

Cons:
The book is not organized in any fashion. At the very least an alphabetized table of contents, an index, or contents by seeking/avoiding. I had to just read the table of contents and mark which ones described my son. Then I went through each page and took notes by category; sensory seeking, noise, soothing, etc.

I am happy I have it in my personal library as a tool. I just wish the info was better organized for quick reference.

I have ordered at least 2 copies, if not 3, over the years because it's so helpful and I want to share it.
I have a daughter on the Autism spectrum and have cared for 3 other kiddos with Autism in my home (foster kids) for years. We've also gone through years and years of occupational therapy and got to the point where we built an occupational therapy gym in our home. This book has such helpful suggestions and has served as an extremely helpful tool with our kiddos.
Oftentimes us parents of kids on the autism spectrum or with Sensory Processing Disorder, don't have time to read a book. But THIS book just lists the issue in the table of contents (ie: is fearful of washing hands), and on the indicated page, it gives a brief overview of what the child is experiencing followed by a bullet-pointed list of ways and ideas to help them cope. This is an excellent guide to cope with individual issues without making you read through page after page of information that does not apply to your kid. I highly recommend this book!

I like this simplified reference that makes it easy to find a behavior, read the sensory needs causing it and recommendations to help meet those needs. I find it useful for other family members or caregivers who don’t attend our OT sessions but still need to understand behaviors when taking care of my child.

Instead of having to read through a lengthy text to understand your child's issues (if you understand the pedagogical and esoteric phrasing), this book is more like a "go-to" manual that separates each issue into a page-long synopsis of what is going on and what you can do about it. Each page covers a different issue, in alphabetical order for easy flip-through reading, and it jumps right to the point: "My child does this, so XYZ is a great way to deal with it in a positive and loving way." Not a book for those wishing to understand the origin or genetics or background of each issue, but great for parents or teachers who have kids with multiple issues that need quick addressing. In the time it takes to flip to a page and scan it, you have a solution for dealing with it at your fingertips. I've got about a dozen other, more detailed and lengthy books on my shelves, and this was by far the easiest and most helpful of them all in helping me take care of my daughter, who has countless sensory integration issues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!

As educators we can do all the training in the world but still struggle to understand some behaviours of the children we teach. This is a simplified book that considers the behaviours and what practical sensory activities can be done to support and help the child resolve their potential difficulties. Easy reading, easy to use.
If in doubt, consider sensory needs in our children. If you want to know more, consider the polyvagel theory.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ummm, pretty awesome...

Love this book, makes sensory troubles much easier to explain and gives really concise advice for particular problems. Usually in other books this kind of advice is generic, but in this book it is direct and easy: like does your child chew holes in their shirts every day? if so do THIS, exact advice rather than 50 possible solutions. Its not an ecclectic pile of sensory advice which might have been nice, so to me it seems to follow a certain philosophy that I, as a junior at this branch of the profession, struggle to see the origin of. But info is presented in such a useful way its going to help thousands of families work out struggles that they didnt know were not that uncommon...child hates to have picture taken... not keen on the feeling of wind... super-particular about clothes. Pediatric therapists could use it to get their work off to a good start that seems extremely do-able for families, rather than kind of impossible as more generic advice would do. Since this is so well-priced too!
Just a small problem, the book has no index so its hard to find information: I read something great and then later want to look that cool thing up and its a little bit painful, pages are not organized or grouped together with a certain theme. So the sensory issues are mashed together and really so far only luck helps me save time when trying to find things...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great resource

I got this on the recommendation of a teacher on the early bird autism course. It’s very useful - especially for a parent or carer who is trying to get to grips with the world of autism and the many different types of behaviour and things to try. The only downside is that there isn’t much of an order to it so you just have to hunt down a list which isn’t grouped or ordered in any way!
