Baja Journey begins with a hitchhiking trip through 1967 Baja before there was a paved road. It is followed by an odyssey through Mexico, the beatnik era in San Francisco, the casinos of Las Vegas, the deserts of the Southwest, the streets of New York and New Orleans.

It includes dramatic and numerous adventures such as surviving a flash flood, capturing a wild donkey, lettering billboards in a baseball stadium Tepic, building a houseboat from scrap wood, traveling the Mississippi River and starting a group called the Salvation Navy.

In this story of travelers who are not tourists, an inner journey parallels an outer one producing invaluable self discovery and transformation.

An Adventure from Afar

An Adventure from Afar
I’ve been friends with Ingrid Lucia, Pearlman’s daughter, for over twenty years. Knowing of Ingrid’s unconventional upbringing, I was intrigued to gain more insight into her origin story. My chance came when I acquired Pearlman’s memoir, Baja Journey. I opened the book a day after returning from Puerto Vallarta, the magic and mystery fresh in my mind, and was delighted that Pearlman’s expedition began in Mexico. Far from the circumstances of my recent getaway, hers began with hitchhiking through Baja in the late 1960s. She chronicles her travels throughout Mexico, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Southwestern deserts, New York, and New Orleans. Some of these are with just David, Ingrid’s father, and others with a group of travelers. Children, including Ingrid, are born along the way. Yet, this is much more than a travelogue. The exploration of her adventure extends far beyond the locales and even beyond the lifespan of her relationship with the enigmatic David. Her internal journey is a conversion from insecurity and fear to a place of immense growth, strength, and independence. Pearlman delivers her story with honesty and wit. Don’t deny yourself this vivid experience. It could never be recreated or repeated.

Maxine Pearlman has written a wonderful book. Her bohemian life with "Poppa Neutrino" relied entirely on luck, fate and love. Practically without money, and with always evolving plans, they found kindness, adventure, hardship and sometimes boredom on the road in Mexico, California, and well beyond.
This book is an addition to the stories, books and movie about David Pearlman, aka Poppa Neutrino, but it is also a story of naive trust. a Trust that does collapse finds a path to confidence and self reliance. Throughout her adventures Maxine certainly keeps her sense of humor.
This delightful book is a "road" story, but one not like any other.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Baja Journey because it is a well-written, action-packed, true story. All along this journey the accommodations were mostly primitive, uncomfortable, and sometimes quite dangerous. It's amazing that she survived some of the situations she found herself in, and equally amazing that her attitude throughout was remarkably positive. Her journey was mental, physical and spiritual, and because of it she became a happier, stronger, more self-sufficient and self-confident woman. It was a fascinating read and I didn't want the book to end!

I enjoyed this book with much exuberance, being that I never had the nerve nor the desire to venture outside my common lifestyle. Anyone who has the guts to venture to the places with little water, food and transportation is a hero to me. The roads and adventures Maxine experienced are only wishes of mine that never came true. Her relationship with her lover leaves one to ponder on. Follow the desert roads and towns that fill this book.

It will keep you wishing for more pages to read.

I loved the way this extraordinary trip influenced an inner spiritual journey for the author. It had me reflect on own life values.

A good adventure story and insightful too
