About the author
Chris Maxwell joined Emmanuel University as Director of Spiritual Life and Campus Pastor in 2006 after pastoring in Orlando FL for 19 years. Chris and his wife, Debbie, a teacher, have three sons (Taylor, Aaron and Graham) and nine grandchildren.
Chris speaks around the world in churches, retreat centers, conferences, and medical conventions. His 12th and latest book, "Things We've Handed Down: Twelve Letters I Leave for You," uses some of the favorite books Chris has read to reveal how they influenced his life and what he can "hand down" to readers. "Equilibrium: 31 Ways to Stay Balanced on Life's Uneven Surfaces" offers practical suggestions on how to make wise decisions when we feel out of balance. His book "embracing now: pain, joy, healing, living," is a collection of 100 poems. The book "a slow and sudden God: 40 years of wonder," is a collection of poetic reflections of life written through four decades. "Underwater: When Encephalitis, Brain Injury, and Epilepsy Change Everything," helps readers understand the painful adventure of many people who struggle. "Pause with Jesus: Entering His Story in Everyday Life," enters the stories of Jesus walking with His disciples, loving those unloved by others, and leaving the crowd to get time alone with the Father. In his book "Pause for Pastors: Finding Still Waters in the Storm of Ministry," Chris offers life-lessons from his own years as a pastor to help other pastors find rest in the stress of their vocation. "Pause for Moms" encourages mothers (and everyone) to enjoy each moment in a hurried world. Those three follow the first in his Pause Series - "Pause: The Secret to a Better Life, One Word at a Time." The stories, questions, and spiritual exercises guide readers to a greater understanding of how God is with us in everyday life experiences. His book "Unwrapping His Presence" is a collection of stories and poems for the Christmas season, a difficult time for many people. It contains honest words of hope, reminding readers of Christ's entry into our world and our lives. "Changing My Mind" chronicles Chris' battle with the life-changing experience of encephalitis and the long-term effects of epilepsy. God has used his disability to bring hope to many hurting people. His first book, "Beggars Can Be Chosen," uses the narratives of Jesus inviting people to follow Him to teach much about Christ's method of evangelism.
In addition to being an author of those books, Chris writes articles, reviews, curriculum, poetry, songs, commercials and speeches for various magazines, publishing companies, websites, and newspapers. He has also served as editor or ghostwriter for over forty books, and written chapters and devotionals for other books, including Traci Mullins' "A Grandmother's Touch."

- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2017I have read many of Chris's books and am always inspired by his great personal life experiences. Underwater is no different. Chris has a unique writing style that captures the imagination and inspires. Underwater is how Chris felt when recovering from severe brain damage. He teaches us to breath deeply while living each moment. Living underwater is an experience that many of us find difficult to relate to, but Chris shows us how to find love when we think we may be drowning.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2017This book is filled with encouragement and suggestions to live a healthier, better life even if the reader does not have epilepsy. Using real life stories of people with various struggles, Underwater reminds readers that there are ways to compensate for "deficiencies" we may have and others who have gone through similar circumstances and situations. If you or someone you know is going through any kind of struggle, I highly recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2017The account from Chris Maxwell, his family, doctors and friends of how his life was affected by encephalitis is inspiring. I found the book to be helpful with my own "underwater" experiences, this book affirms life, affirms hope, affirms family and affirms the triumph of the human spirit.
This book is for anyone who faces life struggles and wants to overcome!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2017I read this book with a view of trying to understand better what life is like for those in my life who live with epilepsy or other major trauma - it was a huge help! I encourage you to read, learn & try to understand better what traumatic brain injury, or any other trauma must be like.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2017Wonderful writer, Christian and family man. We always enjoy his books and buy enough to share.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2017I am not someone who has struggled with epilepsy, however I am someone who struggles with the battle of the mind in different ways. That being said, Underwater was a book of honest pain - some familiar to me, and some not - as well as a book of honest hope that I believe we all could grab on to. I loved how real it was. I loved the stories and hearing more of Pastor Chris's story, and how it affected everyone around him. It was honest, and sad, and scary, and a reminder that we're never alone in our battles. It was a different twist than how he wrote it in Changing My Mind, which was great, in that it caused me to understand the illness and its effects even more clearly. I really liked how even though there was so much obvious pain in all of the stories, it ended with hope. I was thrilled that it's a book that can relate and bring healing to people who don't have epilepsy too, even though it's about and written by people who do have epilepsy. It was extremely well written, encouraging, inspiring, painful, sad, realistic, and hopeful.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2017I highly recommend Chris Maxwell's new book, Under Water. I had the blessing of meeting Chris 10 years ago, and though we have only gotten to be together maybe a dozen times over the years, he has been a real source of blessing and encouragement to me. Chris and I share similar stories, in that we both have epilepsy, even though we've lived very different lives. The cause of his epilepsy is the direct result of having encephalitis. Though he and I have the same kind of seizures, the cause of mine is unknown - they just started "out of the blue." But the encouragement I have gotten from reading his story is a huge blessing. It's comforting to know someone who has faced the same kinds of trials I have, and has been victorious through it all. Even if you don't have epilepsy, but would like to learn or understand more about it, Chris' story will give you a good idea of what a patient with epilepsy, their family, and friends face on a daily basis. Thank you Chris.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2017If you think Underwater is a book just for those who are dealing with illness or brain injury, you would be wrong. There are so many insights to everyday life for everyone in this book by Chris Maxwell. I found the parallels in Chris’ medical adventure to echo the same things I experience in life outside any medical connection.
Who doesn’t face surprises in life? Questions without answers? Feelings of panic and frustration? I sure do and so does everyone else I’ve ever met.
Not only is Underwater broken down into bite-size chapters with clever titles, but just a single reading is more life a buffet than an appetizer. Several chapters could stand alone on their own theme for a book, and yet we are given just the right portion to satisfy our hunger, scratch an itch, and bring peace to our own troubled waters.
This book needs to be read, and then read again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rewarding book for those suffering Encephalitis and their carers.
My friend suffered Encephilitis over a year ago, this also left her with Epilepsy. I'de never heard of the former before this happened and saw how this condition changes everything in your life.
I've been helping my friend recover and found that this book contained some amazing real descriptions of how the brain is effected and how the healing process takes shape.
I would recommend this book to anyone suffering or to those who care for them, it has certainly helped my friend.
