The single greatest mistake that many people make when it comes to their day-to-day personal security is their failure to see street people -- aggressive panhandlers, homeless people, con artists, muggers, and other denizens of downtown (or wherever they happen to be) -- as a threat. Either from ignorance, deliberate unwillingness to see the less fortunate as a threat, or an arrogant or naïve sense of generosity and charity, people usually overlook the danger of being approached in public by someone, anyone, who has a story to tell. Most of the time, somebody who asks you for a dollar, a smoke, or the time wants just that. Once in a while, though, he means to mug you... and if you ignore the threat he is going to succeed.

Street People Strategies is a comprehensive guide to identifying these threats. It not only outlines a number of homeless panhandling ploys and street mugger con-jobs, but also provides you with a simple mental and physical plan for removing yourself from danger. Phil Elmore knows what he's talking about when it comes to these threats, for each one is drawn from a direct experience, most of which happened in downtown Syracuse, NY (a city notorious for its aggressive panhandling problem in the late nineties and early aughties).

Elmore pulls no punches and spares no feelings in the kick to the gut that is
Street People Strategies. A must read for anyone living in urban and suburban areas.

Describes an ongoing problem that we're not supposed to admit is a problem. Good strategies for dealing with these people.

I have plenty of experience working with the homeless population in my area and a long history working with individuals in addiction recovery. Phil gives practical advice and strategies for dealing with these issues we are more frequently having to deal with. I would recommend this book for anyone who is living and traveling anywhere.

I would have liked more strategies that didn’t involve fighting.

Phil is the real deal. Always based in the practical notion of what works. One of my new favorite authors, he is humorous and straight forward in all his writings and this book is no different. I recommend all his works and this one in particular. The reality out there is ugly and getting uglier, be wary, be ready, and don't be a victim.

Phil has done a fantastic job of compiling common sense and proven tactics for handling street interactions. I consider this knowledge invaluable in today’s world especially if you are an urban dweller.

I also highly appreciate that Phil takes the time to acknowledge the sources of his information.

I'm a TED Global speaker on homelessness and have lived and worked among the homeless and can honestly say, Phil NAILS it about how to act and respond to the homeless. Yes, there are good homeless with a good story, but there are far more who are likely to abuse your good intentions. Great read and worth the time and money to read.
