Part autobiography, part philosophical inquiry, and part spiritual quest, Comedy Sex God is a hilarious, profound, and enlightening romp around the fertile mind of stand-up stand-out, podcast king, and HBO superstar Pete Holmes.

Pete Holmes is a sold-out-every-night stand-up comedian with two HBO specials and the host of the hugely successful podcast You Made It Weird, and he was the creator-star of the hit HBO show Crashing. But it wasn’t always roses for Pete. Growing up, Pete was raised an evangelical Christian, but his religion taught him that being “bad”—smoking, drinking, having doubts or premarital sex—would get him sent to an eternity in hell. So, terrified of the God he loved, Pete devoted his life to being “good,” even marrying his first girlfriend at the age of twenty-two only to discover a few years later he was being cheated on. Thanks for nothing, God.

Pete’s failed attempt at a picture-perfect life forced him to reexamine his beliefs, but neither atheism, nor Christianity, nor copious bottles of Yellow Tail led him to enlightenment. Pete longed for a model of faith that served him and his newfound uncertainties about the universe, so he embarked on a soul-seeking journey that continues to this day. Through encounters with mind-altering substances, honing his craft in front of thousands of his comedy fans, and spending time with savants like Ram Dass, Pete forged a new life—both spiritually and personally.

Beautifully written and often completely hilarious—imagine Dass’s Be Here Now if penned by one of the funniest people alive—Comedy Sex God reveals a man at the top of his game and a seeker in search of the deeper meanings of life, love, and comedy.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Pete Holmes is Hunter S. Thompson if he was square as shit and funny as fuck.  Did I swear enough? Pussy?” — Sarah Silverman

“The thing about Pete is that there’s this question he never stops asking in his life and work: What is this? From his standup to his podcast to his talk to show to Crashing, this What is this? question infuses all he does with an existential urgency and a spiritual vitality. This is why so many resonate with him—he’s welcoming everyone in to the ancient practice of asking and seeking and questioning and following it where it leads, insisting that we  join in him in his wonder and awe. He often says We’re on a rock flying through space and he’s tired of not talking about it. Well, this time he’s writing about it, and you’re going to love it.” — Rob Bell, author of Love Wins and What Is The Bible?

“A marvelous and heartfelt story about the journey from role to soul.” — Ram Dass

“Pete Holmes is that rare stand-up comedian who is wickedly sharp without being cynical and joyously exuberant without losing his edge.  In Comedy Sex God, Pete hilariously confronts his faith in a way I would never dare, unless I thought there was real money in it.” — Conan O’Brien

Pete Holmes is a thoughtful and hilarious contradiction. Centered, but ambitious. Zen, but stressed. He’s like the Buddha if the Buddha Googled himself. This memoir captures all the wonderful inconsistencies and strengths of my very funny friend. It was a joy to read. — John Mulaney

Seldom do I read such creative and humorous writing—and have it be so profound and true at the same time. To quote Thomas Merton four days before he died  ‘One day you realize that most of religion is laughable.   And then you realize that you are nevertheless religious.’ Peter Holmes might just be the new Merton! — Richard Rohr, author of The Universal Christ

I loved this book. It was hilarious and relatable - even though I'm a female and have a different perspective on the sex part. LOL!! Even so, I came from a similar religious background as Pete Holmes and understood perfectly his feelings of guilt and sin and shame. His journey out of that prison to a broader concept of God and loving oneself was sweet and funny and perfectly dear. I recommend this whole heartedly.

Fascinating read! I love Pete Holmes's comedy, but this isn't that. It's not stand-up routines written down, at all. He talks about his childhood (full of religion and entirely lacking in sex ed other than a strong sense of guilt and shame), his comedy, and especially his experiences with studying religion and god and spirituality. Much more like his podcast (You Made It Weird) than his stand-up since it dwells on issues of society and religion and his own studies of various practices. Funny, but much more than just comedy bits. He's incredibly insightful and this was personal and touching.

For anyone open to the idea that there’s something beautifully spiritual to the human experience, this would be a very good read. In addition, for anyone like the author or myself who was raised in a Christian church, this is a unique way to challenge yourself. Read it with love and enjoy the laughs.

I first became aware of Pete Holmes through Conan. I had seen Holmes perform on the show a few times, and I found him very funny. Later, Holmes had his own show directly following Conan’s on TBS. It was through his talk show that I learned about his podcast You Made It Weird. In many ways, the podcast was perfect for me. At the time I had a grueling commute and listening to Holmes’ interviews were a perfect distraction. I also found Holmes’ take of spiritual issues very interesting.

Holmes grew up in the church and he attended Gordon College, a private Christian college just outside of Boston. I sort of grew up in the church and I attended Azusa Pacific University, a private Christian university just outside of Pasadena. It was very interesting reading Holmes’ experiences in college. It was like I was reading my own biography. It was almost eerie.

However, I don’t want to equate my life to Pete Holmes. He has lived a very different life. He is a comedian who has had two television shows and acclaimed podcast. I am a higher education professional with no television shows.

After Holmes’ divorce, he threw away his faith away and he pretty much started all over again. He had a lot of baggage full of guilt. He needed to deprogram his mind. After my bout with depression, I threw away my faith and started all over again. Holmes identifies as a Christ-leaning spiritualist and I love that. Though I probably lean even more, I am still redefining my spirituality.

I love reading books by comedians, because I love their perspective on life. Holmes has a unique, beautiful perspective. I have never learned so much from a comedian. I would consider Holmes more of a spiritualist than a comedian. Holmes probably does not care about the label.

If you are interested in life, you will love this book. If you are interested in comedy, you will love this book. If you like Pete Holmes, you will love this book. I was afraid this book was simply going to be a rehash of the ideas discussed in his podcast, but it’s not. The ideas may be the same, but Holmes breathes fresh life into them. You get a real, honest Pete Holmes.

I really enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it.

Keep it crispy.

Great read. For me, it is a great introduction into what people may call Spiritualism, although I don't have the vocabulary to describe it correctly. Being of similar background to growing up in Christianity, I really connected with this book. I feel, it has helped me reconnect with my spirit and given me a new perspective on religion and a whole host of other stuff. Additionally, this book also introduced me to other authors like Ram Dass, Richard Rhor among others. Highly recommend.

Peter is a great story teller and self-deprecating about his life experiences. Many times throughout this book I was literally laughing so hard that I was crying. Until about the last third of the book. It turns into a self-medicating portrayal of his journey into religion and how he transforms from a Christian into a Buddhist and has this love affair with Ram Dass, a Maharaji follower. I often questioned the private one-on-ones he has with Ram Dass and wondered how much he paid for that type of private audience access. Kind of weird .... but glad he found his way to "enlightenment".

Pete Holmes is a bit of a hero of mine so it was a thrill to hear his autobiography. The audiobook was so much fun as I got to hear him deliver the material, do impressions, etc.
We have had a nearly opposite spiritual journey in many ways and he is such a thoughtful person that in made me understand many of the points of view that I can sometimes be too judgmental about.
He's lived a very full life for his age and it was a treat to read about his growth in comedy, spirituality and personal life. Very inspiring.

I honk-laughed a bunch of times. This is good reading for those growing up as religious teenagers during the Purity pledge church era of the 90’s. There was a lot of healing for me in this book. The Ram Dass stuff got pretty pedantic. Pete Holmes writes like he truly found enlightenment at the age of 39 because he was rich enough to go see a spiritual master. Just being blunt here. Of course there is nuance. Everything before that section is gold. I read the whole book in one day. GOOD BOOK, y’all.

Peter Holmes is a modern holy man. I listen to his podcast on my commute to work and home, admittedly way too much to listen to one person in a week, but his insight into WTF is going on here is compelling enough to also buy this book and read it. The first 3 pages help me understand this unique individual and since that is as far as I have read, that's all I can honestly review. I'm excited to keep reading, you should get this book, Pete Holmes is great. He hooked me with a bit named Peirce and keeps me interested. Thanks for the book.
