Review
A guide to the basics of management and beyond. In his nonfiction debut, Heckler draws on his decades of managerial and CIO experience in order to lay out a blueprint for managers and provide the "aha" moments that will help readers discover that management can be "interesting, enjoyable, and rewarding." Although he includes plenty of tactics and priorities for new managers ("Tackle the low-hanging fruit quickly to demonstrate your capability," he writes for instance. "Rack up some early wins...first perceptions matter"), the primary focus of most of his advice is communication. Whether it's dealing with vendor contracts, building networks ("Never eat alone," he stresses, echoing Keith Ferrazi's book of the same title), or dealing with subordinates, Heckler spends a good deal of time sorting out the nuances of how managers should and shouldn't communicate. "Be conscious of how your receiver will see and hear your message and whether that's what you actually want them to hear," he cautions, warning that, for instance, managers should never give negative feedback by email. "Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself," he writes. Naturally, this approach has its limits; managers must fire people, after all (focus on keeping your top performers rather than your failing team members, he advises), and they must be "politically savvy" about the way power works in their company. Heckler is an effective, unassuming writer, plainly making his case for a more people-oriented kind of manager. Some of his points are self-evident but perhaps worth reiterating ("You'll cross plenty of hurdles," he mentions. "You'll get some things right, and some wrong"), and his hope that all managers will show personal humility is obviously delusional, but even so, this book will provide many valuable reminders of the fundamentals.
A companionable, ground-up review of the basics of human management.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2024Steve Heckler’s “So … You Want to be a Manager” is a personal guide based on a lifetime of experience in the trenches of the profession. This book covers a range of roles from managing the people who do the work, to middle management; managing other managers, and all the way to management at the highest levels of a company, i.e., the C suite executives who set the course of a company. Steve Heckler discusses the challenges and skills you need to master at the various levels of a career in management.
One of the things I really enjoyed most about the book is the personal inset anecdotal material that illustrates points that are made. These are both strong clarifications of the content illustrated with real world examples and based on personal accounts. Steve Heckler has been there and done that.
For the past several years Steve has been coaching Managers through his company, which hosts Community of Practice sessions in which executives from various companies get together on a regular basis to discuss issues relative to their work. In that capacity Steve enables and mentors productive learning for those present and I think this experience has inspired him to put into book form much of what he has to share as a mentor in Management at all levels. As I read through the book I realized that Steve is able to draw not only from his own professional experiences in management but also from the experiences of many other managers that he has coached. I get the feeling that I am not listening to just Steve Heckler in this book but am also benefitting from the real world challenges of his many clients.
The book is organized into chapters addressing key challenges in the career of a management professional . For example a chapter is devoted to communications, which is where managers spend the majority of their time. Here Steve relates an example of the need for clarity in communication by referring to an issue that came up in one of the coaching sessions he hosts.
A chapter on recruiting unpacks how to reach the various generations of potential hires from Boomer, to X, Y (millennial), and Z (the newest crop). Insight in how to interview candidates effectively, how to hire contractors and consultants, and all issues related to recruiting and building teams from the managers perspective are examined and explored again with concrete examples from real world experiences.
A chapter on managing your time gets into the details that an effective manager must master. How to delegate, how to prioritize (there is a system), and understanding how to spend your time to effectively achieve results and goals at the various stages of a career.
Towards the latter half of his book the focus is on the things that drive career success. How to build a team. How to Network effectively. What makes a great leader, which is the culmination of a successful career in management. And of course, what exactly is the difference between Management and Leadership. A terrific book that every manager should have as a resource as they navigate a career in management.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2024This book deeply resonates with anyone striving to excel in management. It is packed with actionable advice, real-world examples, and a clear framework to navigate the often-challenging journey to a great manager.
Steve's conversational tone and focus on practical applications make this book not only an engaging read but also a reliable reference for day-to-day challenges. Whether you're stepping into a managerial role for the first time or looking to refine your skills, this book is a treasure trove of wisdom and guidance.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2024Insights from a proven successful leader. The book reconfirmed many methodologies and perspectives to consider and use not only to be a great manager but a person as well. I wish I had this book +30 years ago at the start of my career. This book is a clear aide to both new and seasoned managers, offering practical insights and real-world experiences that are invaluable in today's dynamic business environment. The book filters through the sea of management resources and pinpoints those that offer the greatest value. Steve references industry-best resources / references such as Lencioni, Covey, Collins, Ehrhard, and Goldsmith, providing readers with a curated list of essential readings that complement the book's teachings. This book excels in presenting both the seemingly obvious (but often forgotten) like the value of listening and the "golden rule," as well as the nuanced and invaluable concepts within Situational Leadership II (SLII), Emotional Intelligence (EI) and more.
