Alexander Hamilton: Writings (LOA #129) (Library of America Founders Collection) Hardcover – October 15, 2001
Purchase options and add-ons
Arranged chronologically, this volume contains more than 170 letters, speeches, pamphlets, essays, reports, and memoranda written between 1769 and 1804. Included are all fifty-one of Hamilton’s contributions to The Federalist, as well as subsequent writings calling for a broad construction of federal power; his famous speech to the Constitutional Convention, which gave rise to accusations that he favored monarchy; and early writings supporting the Revolutionary cause and a stronger central government. His detailed reports as Secretary of the Treasury on the public credit, a national bank, and the encouragement of manufactures present a forward-looking vision of a country transformed by the power of financial markets, centralized banking, and industrial development.
Hamilton’s sometimes flawed political judgment is revealed in the “Reynolds Pamphlet,” in which he confessed to adultery in order to defend himself against accusations of corrupt conduct, as well as in his self-destructive pamphlet attack on John Adams during the 1800 presidential campaign. An extensive selection of private letters illuminates Hamilton’s complex relationship with George Washington, his deep affection for his wife and children, his mounting fears during the 1790s regarding the Jeffersonian opposition and the French Revolution, and his profound distrust of Aaron Burr.

About the authors
Joanne B. Freeman, Professor of History and American Studies at Yale University, specializes in early American politics and political culture. Her interest in political violence and political polarization — dirty, nasty, politics — has made her work particularly relevant in recent years.
Freeman’s award-winning first book — Affairs of Honor: National Politics in the New Republic (Yale University Press, 2001) — explored political combat on the national stage in the Founding era. Her forthcoming book (coming this September from Farrar, Straus and Giroux) — The Field of Blood: Violence in Congress and the Road to Civil War — focuses on physically violent clashes in the House and Senate chambers, and how they shaped and savaged the nation. A tale of polarized politics, splintering political parties, clashing visions of American identity, the political complications of new technologies, and the widespread distrust of Americans in national institutions and in each other, The Field of Blood is a tale of the past that speaks to today.
Freeman has long been committed to public-minded history. Co-host of the popular U.S. history podcast BackStory, Freeman is a frequent public speaker, commentator, and historical consultant whose work has appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and Atlantic Magazine, among others; she has been featured in documentaries on PBS and the History Channel, and been a political commentator on CNN and MSNBC. Her Yale online course, The American Revolution, has been viewed by hundreds of thousands of people in homes and classrooms around the world.
A leading expert on Alexander Hamilton, Freeman was the lead consultant in the renovation and reinterpretation of Alexander Hamilton’s home in Harlem, The Grange. Lin-Manuel Miranda used her work in writing Hamilton.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2024My daughter loves Alexander Hamilton and wanted some books written by him. As far as I know, this is what she wanted. She hasn't said anything to me about it.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2023Very fast service. The book was in better condition than expected.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2016If you've become Hamilton obsessed like the rest of the world, this is a great volume to own. I read Chernow's book, but was looking to read more complete writings than the edited snippets. I don't know that I can read the whole thing - people used to be a lot better at reading dense material than I apparently am, but I will pick my way through much of it eventually!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2020An outstanding collection of Alexander Hamilton's many letters. I've always wanted this, and was thrilled when it arrived! Exactly what I was looking for!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2021Great book helped a lot with research project very informative .
- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2010A comprehensive, chronological collection of the writings of one of, if not the most, brilliant Founding Fathers, this collection gives you Alexander Hamilton in all of his facets with zero editorial interpretation. And that is one of the things that make this book so great. If you have already read a biography of Alexander Hamilton (Ron Chernow's is a great, comprehensive one to start with), this book will give the reader a closer, "over-the-shoulder" look at him that is incredibly enlightening. Not only will one appreciate Hamilton's mind and dedication, but also the passions of the Early Republic era (c. 1789-1804) that threatened to destroy the country before it could even take off. However, the reason I give this four stars instead of five is because the most important works of his (his contributions to the Federalist Papers, his reports on national finance and manufactures, etc.) are very long and difficult to get through. It is not that they are bad, quite the opposite in fact. The problem is that the length of many of these works are daunting and the nearly archaic language of the late 18th century is a chore to unpack. This is definitely not a work for casual readers. But, for those who love U.S. history and want to learn about this enigmatic Founding Father in his own words, there is no better one-volume collection than this edition presented by the Library of America.
