Meet Doug, an ordinary kid who doesn't like hugs, in this fun and exuberant story which aims to spark discussions about bodily autonomy and consent—from author Carrie Finison and the #1 New York Times bestselling illustrator of The World Needs More Purple People, Daniel Wiseman.

Doug doesn't like hugs. He thinks hugs are too squeezy, too squashy, too squooshy, too smooshy. He doesn't like hello hugs or goodbye hugs, game-winning home run hugs or dropped ice cream cone hugs, and he definitely doesn't like birthday hugs. He'd much rather give a high five--or a low five, a side five, a double five, or a spinny five. Yup, some people love hugs; other people don't. So how can you tell if someone likes hugs or not? There's only one way to find out: Ask! Because everybody gets to decide for themselves whether they want a hug or not.

Don't miss DON'T HUG DOUG!
5 Stars
Don't miss DON'T HUG DOUG!
DON'T HUG DOUG is funny and straightforward and Doug is such an unapologetic non-hugger ("Seriously, no hugs.") that you can't help but love the whole adorable, important package. The book teaches young readers that it's totally ok not to want a hug and if someone doesn't want a hug from you, it's not personal. But I almost hate to use the word "teach" because it doesn't feel didactic or educational--it feels more like a celebration of different types of people and different ways to say hello or congratulations or good to see you. The illustrations (I love the hugging slug!) are playful and bright and show kids with a variety of skin tones, which I always appreciate. DON'T HUG DOUG is a must-have book for every collection whether in a classroom, library, or home.

Don't Hug Doug (He Doesn't Like It) teaches kids about consent in a fun and easy to understand way. I love that it teaches respecting boundaries too! The illustrations are so colorful and the diverse characters represented are great. It even offers alternatives to hugs in the form of high fives, though I do wish it also explored other options that don't require physical touch.

I love this book. The humor is flawless, it's fun and engaging, and it teaches about consent and bodily autonomy in such a lighthearted and simple way. My toddler loves it and has learned from it.

My preschool students ask for this book over and over! What a great way to teach about autonomy, respect, personal space, and consent.

This book is a great tool for introducing, and teaching, the concept of consent to children. Whether you're an elementary school teacher looking to reduce conflict with an SEL lesson, or a parent that wants to teach their child about their individual agency, this book will help you to guide their understanding in a way that's fun for everyone.

I love to give hugs so sometimes it's difficult to feel like I'm showing my full range of emotions for someone when they don't want a hug. Realizing how uncomfortable that is for some people and how my hug is having the exact opposite effect is a light-bulb moment. This book is a great way to talk about body autonomy and consent with kids, but it might actually be more useful to give to those effusive adults in the life of a child who just doesn't want a hug. I love how it shows all the other ways we can show affection for each other! Way to go, Carrie Finison and Team!

To my surprise, my 24 month old loves this book already! It is rare to find a new book that has such good, clever, child appealing writing and illustrations. The rhythm and timing of the text is spot on. I bought it to talk about body autonomy, and it's a great introduction to some of the way people differ and how to respect others, but it is also just a funny, charming, readable book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect book to explain the importance of consent and personal space
Reviewed in India on April 3, 2023
I loved this book! Can’t wait to read it to the kids. Its a beautiful way to explain consent and personal space to children from the start so they can understand the importance of respecting other’s wishes and also so they know that they too can, and have a right to, say no when they don’t want their personal space intruded upon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good book
Reviewed in Australia on April 3, 2024
I really like this book. It’s written well, it’s cute, and the message is important. It’s a very good book to teach children about physical boundaries, and how that someone not wanting a hug doesn’t mean they don’t like you. Especially good to teach kids about how those on the spectrum might not like physical contact. Highly recommend.

This was a lovely introduction for my almost 3 year old to the idea that you can't just hug/touch people without asking permission. It's lighthearted, has bright pictures, and suggests alternatives to hugging. Highly recommend it.
