With a new foreword by Peter Brandt.

Richard W. Schabacker's great work, Technical Analysis and Stock Market Profits, is a worthy addition to any technical analyst's personal library or any market library. His "pioneering research" represents one of the finest works ever produced on technical analysis, and this book remains an example of the highest order of analytical quality and incisive trading wisdom.

Originally devised as a practical course for investors, it is as alive, vital and instructional today as the day it was written. It paved the way for Robert Edwards and John Magee's best-selling Technical Analysis of Stock Trends - a debt which is acknowledged in their foreword: 'Part One is based in large part on the pioneer researches and writings of the late Richard Schabacker.'

Schabacker presents technical analysis as a totally organized subject and comprehensively lays out the various important patterns, formations, trends, support and resistance areas, and associated supporting technical detail. He presents factors that can be confidently relied on, and gives equal attention to the blemishes and weaknesses that can upset the best of analytical forecasts: Factors which investors would do well to absorb and apply when undertaking the fascinating game of price, time and volume analysis.

This book can be a little dense but its amazing to see how much of it still applies today. I've browsed Youtube, watched multiple courses online and haven't seen a lot of traders using what is taught within this book. I said what the heck and decided to give it a try and grew my portfolio by 27% trading only one ticker ATVI and only risking little less than $200 (.025%) of my total cash per trade. Made money going short and going long. I've been having raging success studying this book and think it really jump started my trading career. Even though the markets are jam packed with action right now. I recommend this book to anyone looking to get right into trading.

I'll start off by saying that this book was an accidental purchase based on a false premise perpetrated by another.

That said, whenever and however I am lead to take an unintended action I look for the good. I did not have to go far. In the beginning, the book introduces reversal patterns. I then takes the user into volume and how to use volume to determine where the market is in relation to tops and bottoms.

Written originally in the 1930's, the book while not as comprehensive as Edwards and Maghee, would be a good edition to any traders librarry.

The book provides the principles of classical charting. Interestingly, Schabacker’s brother-in-law was Robert D. Edwards who was the co-author with John Magee of the well-known classic “Technical Analysis of Stock Trends” first published in1948, and then in multiple reprints. Part 1 of their book was largely based on material in the Schabacker book with proper attribution.

I was not aware of this book before I saw an ad from the publisher recently. Having read over 600 books on charting, trading, investing and technical analysis over the past 60 years, but I never came across this book in a library or online. One reason could be that only 1000 or so copies were printed when the editions were published and not widely available.

Harriman House first re-published this book in 2005. This 2021 hard-cover printing is a Harriman Definitive Edition with a book size of 7” x 9.5” which sells for $70. The selected font size and numerous charts are easy to read. Other well-known books in the definitive edition series include the Nicolas Darvas “How I Made $2,000,000 in the Stock Market “, another classic, and one I highly recommend. Also, there is Napoleon Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich” and Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War”.

This big 487-page hardcover book written by Richard W. Schabacker is the foundation of modern technical analysis, and was originally designed as a 12 module course for individuals. Accordingly, when adapted into the book format, it was divided into 12 chapters, each representing one module. The material is presented in a well-written, organized, logical step-by-step manner. Preceding the beginning of each chapter there is a bullet-point list of the key topics covered (about 40 per chapter) with the chapter lengths ranging between 24 to 41 pages depending on the topic.

Schabacker was the developer of this body of technical analysis which is extensive and required countless hours of painstaking, manual research and analysis. Technicians everywhere are benefiting from his work today in the work of today’s technicians who have built upon and expanded his work. Imagine what additional material and insights Schabacker would have been able to produce, if he had access to the Internet and the computer power that we do today.

Although Schabaker points out the importance of fundamental analysis, he says, “…fundamentals are highly important and must be taken into consideration by the investor or trader,… but they are not technical factors which we are about to study

Schabacker focused on illustrating and explaining used classical charting patterns and topics using simple weekly line charts for price and volume on an arithmetic scale paper that he handcrafted in this day, not the more popular open-high-low-close, or candlesticks which we are familiar with today. There was no mention on the use of our explanation as to the benefit and shortfalls of moving averages. He spent most of his focus on Explaining gaps, head-and-shoulder patterns, triangles, trend lines, volume, continuation patterns, false moves, resistance and support levels, especially reversal patterns which encompassed almost 150-pages and four chapters.
Moreover, all the technical indicators that we use today such as RSI, MACD, Slow and Fast Stochastics, ADX, Chaikin Money Flow, On Balance Volume, Force Index , and Williams %R were not yet available during Schabacker’s time, nor were computers or the Internet which makes his unique contribution even more remarkable.

Interestingly, the author mentions that he finds moving averages, oscillators, ratio calculations , and breadth of the market to all have their protagonists, but believes that their practical value is questionable when using in trading stocks. He felt using them leads to confusion and indecision rather than a profitable trade. His chapter on trading tactics is very interesting, as are his recommendations for novice investors.

If the book contained charts produced in 2021 and discussed currently available stocks, then the reader would have no idea that it was written over 80 years ago. That is how relevant the thinking and writing is. Clearly, in the 1930s the efficient market hypothesis and the random walk hypothesis were not yet known. But many non-technicians believe in these theories and discount the value of technical analysis.

It is surprising that the Dow Theory was covered in only two pages, but Schabaker recommended that students read the works of Robert Rhea for more in-depth information. He invested in individual stocks so he felt that spending time analyzing an index was not fruitful.

According the author, stock charts are the single most important factor in forecasting price movements and are absolutely necessary for successful stock investing. From my long-time experience in the markets, I agree 100%.
The buyer of book is provided access to a URL to obtain a free downloadable e-book. This is very useful for people on the go who want to spend time reviewing the contents of this massive volume.

Harriman House is to be commended for bringing this book back into print in 2005, and 2021. Technical analysis devotees, newbies and other interested parties will enjoy the depth of knowledge provided in this bible of technical analysis. I strongly recommend it with the understanding that it will take time to read and understand all the critical topics discovered. Perhaps, reading a chapter or two at a time, and them coming back to the book in a few days or a week will let you absorb the material in a more relaxed manner than plowing through it in a couple of sittings. Make sure you take notes and underline key sentences to obtain the most benefit.
This book is ground zero of technical analysis and it was the first comprehensive text of the tenets of the subject written in a simple-to-understand style by a master technician. I highly recommend it.

Anyone starting to learn Technical Analysis should have this book on shelf. Undoubtedly, some of the modern day patterns like Cup & Handle as well as momentum oscillators are not covered here (as they were discovered much later), but this does not take the sheen off. The chart patterns are explained so thoroughly that one could easily spot them in a live chart. Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars 英語が読めないのに、買っちゃったwwwwwww
Reviewed in Japan on October 31, 2012
