Modernist aesthetics in architecture, art, and product design are familiar to many. In soaring glass structures or minimalist canvases, we recognize a time of vast technological advance which affirmed the power of human beings to reshape their environment and to break, radically, from the conventions or constraints of the past. Less well-known, but no less fascinating, is the distillation of modernism in graphic design.

This unprecedented TASCHEN publication, authored by
Jens Müller, brings together approximately 6,000 trademarks, focused on the period 1940–1980, to examine how modernist attitudes and imperatives gave birth to corporate identity. Ranging from media outfits to retail giants, airlines to art galleries, the sweeping survey is organized into three design-orientated chapters: Geometric, Effect, and Typographic. Each chapter is then sub-divided into form and style led sections such as alphabet, overlay, dots and squares.

Alongside the comprehensive catalog, the book features an introduction from
Jens Müller on the history of logos, and an essay by R. Roger Remington on modernism and graphic design. Eight designer profiles and eight instructive case studies are also included, with a detailed look at the life and work of such luminaries as Paul Rand, Yusaku Kamekura, and Anton Stankowski, and at such significant projects as Fiat, The Daiei Inc., and the Mexico Olympic Games of 1968. An unrivaled resource for graphic designers, advertisers, and branding specialists, Logo Modernism is equally fascinating to anyone interested in social, cultural, and corporate history, and in the sheer persuasive power of image and form.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“This fantastic collection of handsome logos testifies to the enduring power of clean, crisp, universally symbolic design language that is a far cry from the often trendy, cheesy, puffed-up corporate branding that exists today. […] Logo Modernism is a brilliant catalog of what good corporate logo design looks like.” ― Slate.com

“…blockbuster new book
Logo Modernism…is a beautiful distillation of modernist ideals rendered in their most superbly crafted way.” ― Itsnicethat.com

“…This book is not only full-to-bursting with hugely important logos, it is physically huge!… If you have an interest in social, cultural or corporate history, this is an unrivalled resource and deserves a place on your shelves (if it will fit).” ―
FormFIftyFive.com

“…Almost limitless as a logo archive for the period, TASCHEN’s
Logo Modernism means business about the business of good design.” ― PedroSilmon.com

Absolutely worth it.

Absolutely worth it.
I was looking for a book with examples of logos-- preferably the flat, modern styles and as many as possible. On researching some valid sources, most of them constantly recommended this book. Almost everywhere I searched, this one came up. Without checking any product information and despite it not being cheap, I made the investment.Upon receiving it, I noticed the box it came in was a bit large for a book and.. I then understood why haha! This thing is massive and has quite the weight to match. I was shocked initially but the amount of valuable content-- from the different patterns and styles-- this book is worth it. The languages are split up nice and evenly among each other, making it a book absolutely filled with examples.Be aware though that the examples are not a step-by-step break down of the process designers/studios/agencies used at the time to arrive at that specific design. The designs are displayed, along with what company they belong to, who designed them and in what year. Also has a few real-life applications and some brief history here and there. A really good book in my opinion. Recommend.

This is the best book of logos i have ever seen. It's all about shapes and forms, all shapes are black and white, barely no type. Just the plain form, no color. This helps a designer to concentrate on his work and be inspired. Best buy i made in a long time.
I don't like logos with many colors, gradients. This book takes the simplicity back. Everything here is simple, scalable to small sizes and remarkable.

Also the categories the book have are extremely useful. Such as: shapes that complete each other, vertical lines, circles, monograms and so on. The categories are related to the challenges designers face when designing logos. Its easy to find right the kind of shape you need to inspire you.

The only real complain i have is with the size. The book is too huge. It should be 30% smaller and still show pretty well all of its content.
I get it. Its planned for being a table book. But its too cumbersome to use for research and to have on the top of your desk all day. So to me that defeats the purpose.

But the content is worth. Go get it.

Amazing book and incredible reference! I've been a designer for 38 years and this is a reference I should've had in my library all along. I taught at the college level for 15 years and this should've been a required textbook. Better late than never!

This is like a bible for logo designers... The text is informative and the logos are beautiful! This book gives wonderful examples of different ideas for logos that you can manipulate to you/your client's needs. The book is also HUGE. My only complaint is that I can't fit it on my bookshelf! xD

A truly great book from Taschen. I cannot recommend it enough for any designer or creative, or even just someone who vaguely interested in the field. It's an excellent learning resource as well as a source of possible inspiration.

Everything is printed on great quality and weight of paper, and the print quality is excellent. It's an absolute joy to browse. The whole book is laid out excellently, and is really easy to navigate.

Unrelated to the contents and quality book itself, the corners of mine were a little bit smushed on delivery, so Amazon could do a better job at packaging these.

Forcément, tous les designers l'ont ou ont intérêt à l'avoir. Pour ma part c'est une source d'inspiration quand je cherche à créer un logo pour voir comment certaines formes ont été traitées auparavant.
