Some people have complained about the tip bending. This will happen if you press down too hard. My advice is to let the tool do the work. Make sure it heats up for at least 5-10 minutes and press gently as the tip melts the plastic. If the plastic is not melting, the tip is too cold. Remove the tool from the part, let it heat up, and then continue. If you do bend the tip, let it heat up and press down on a piece of metal in the opposite direction to bend it back. Wear a good pair of leather work gloves to protect your hands from burns when using this tool.
I would consider this an entry-level tool that you would use a few times per year. If you plan on welding a ton of plastic, you might want to upgrade to a heavy duty professional model, but this tool is fine for the home do-it-yourself-er.
You don't need to press hard for most of the weld, but when you're smoothing down edges at the end it sure helps. Not sure if it is a weak metal or too thin, but definitely makes longevity an issue.
The welding rods it came with aren't super hard polyethylene, but they melted easily and adhered to my kayak quickly. I used a blowtorch to melt and apply them to the cracks, while following up with the welder to smooth them into the crack and on the edges.
