Heaven's Bell Paperback – November 30, 2020
Purchase options and add-ons
A book for teens and families that encourages sharing memories.
Heaven's Bell was written to create a safe space for families to have a conversation about death and dying in a natural and productive way, and one that creates feelings of joy, inspiration, and gratitude for life.
Ashley and Cody have one of those special, once-in-a-lifetime friendships that only the luckiest amongst us ever get to experience. From daily games of basketball in Ashley's driveway, to helping each other with homework, to sharing jokes that they know their friend will get, even when no one else does. They are the kind of friends, who never run out of things to share and talk about - even if they just saw each other five minutes ago. Middle school is tough, but with a friendship like theirs, they know they will get through it.
Then, suddenly their world is thrown upside down when Cody becomes mysteriously ill. The normally tough-as-nails 11-year-old Ashley is suddenly forced to imagine what life would be like without her BFF.
And hopefully, through Ashley and Cody's respective eyes, it also creates an appreciation of what happens afterward - no matter what you believe that to be. Initially written for teens, this book is meant to bring readers of all ages comfort and hope, wrapped in a shell of smiles and entertainment!

Editorial Reviews
Review
"Although it is geared for children 8-12 years old, Heaven's Bell is a wonderful story for all ages. I loved the book and have added it to our resource library for our bereavement program. It is a lovely story about love, compassion and friendship and allows for a gentle and beautiful way to introduce the topic of death with anyone. Ringing of the Bells in heaven fits in so perfectly with our Ring and Remember service we hold for our bereaved families...we ring the bell here to remember them and they hear the bells and their names in heaven...brings comfort to all those who have lost a loved one." - Rita Hagen, Executive Director, Hospice Alliance.
"The stress of losing a loved one is difficult at any age but as a child or adolescent coping with a death, the experience can create anxious and lonely feelings. I was impressed with the story of Heaven's Bell and its journal, Ring To Remember because they can help families create open and calming communication especially when feelings are difficult to express. We use a similar journal type for all our families in the ICU setting to help with processing. This healing set also creates many wonderful pathways to reduce stress - creative storytelling, reflection prompts, writing, and drawing. I highly recommend Sherrie Barch's book and journal to help grieving families." - Dr. Emma Williams, DO, Pediatrician
"As a middle school principal for almost 20 years, I've had many interactions with grieving students and families. Heaven's Bell and Ring To Remember journal are two excellent resources I use and recommend to school counselors, teachers and community members. The story helps create a safe space to approach a very difficult topic using storytelling, reflection and creativity. The thoughtful prompts in the journal keep communication flowing and open with students and families. Thank you, Sherrie Barch, for creating these useful, student friendly tools to help us all heal together." - Ms. Julie Cropp, M.A., Principal
From the Author
It was the summer of 2016. Sitting out on the screened-in patio watching dainty ripples dance across the water, the quietness enveloping me was significant. I've always heard from people that when they lose a loved one it's hardest when it's quiet and they are alone with their sorrow. Then, over time, that sorrow left in death's wake is transformed into memories by those left behind about their loved ones in heaven.
The idea of bells ringing to signify those thoughts began when I was in grade school when I first imagined bells ringing to let my loved ones know whenever I was thinking of them. It started as all my loved ones, earthbound and separated by distance, as well as ones who had passed. My theory of the bells helped me not miss them as much because I felt I could still share my memories and love with them by mentally ringing their bell. I pictured them listening and smiling at the memories that made their bell ring.
In 2012, I first shared my story of bells, particularly bells in heaven, with my young nieces who lost their grandma. Immediately upon hearing my story, the girls opened up and began eagerly sharing their memories and stories about their grandma, including what they thought grandma was doing "up in heaven".
From that point on, I began sharing the story with all I felt who needed to hear it. It soon became a safe conversation starter for children and adults alike, especially when the loss was fresh and the emotional wounds still open. Each age group was just as impacted as the other when hearing about "the bells", shedding tears and enthusiastically letting memories and stories about their loved ones spill forth. Each telling of my (still solely verbal) story about "the heaven's bells" inevitably ended with hugs all around and more peace than was there before.
So, on that lovely summer evening in 2016, when I spotted a large "cabin journal" left for me by the owner, my soul told me exactly which words needed to go on those pages. It was finally time, after all these years, to put this story I'd been telling, this story that brought so much comfort to so many people, young and old, down onto paper. On that quiet June evening looking out on the lake, it took me less than 10 minutes to write out my story.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2024Heaven's Bell is an incredible book that resonates deeply with anyone who has experienced grief and loss. As someone who doesn’t typically “do feelings,” I’ve let much of my own grief go unprocessed for years. Yet, I decided to pick up this book on my self-healing journey—and I am so glad I did.
This story is filled with hope, courage, and even moments of joy. The characters are incredibly human and loveable, making it easy to connect with them as they navigate their experiences. What truly sets this book apart is its description of Heaven—a refreshingly unique and unexpectedly fun portrayal that brings light to a heavy topic.
I will offer a small warning: don’t read this in public unless you’re comfortable shedding a tear or two (trust me, you will cry). But those tears are cathartic, and the book’s message is so worth it. Heaven's Bell is a beautiful gift for anyone needing to process grief—whether it’s fresh or decades old. It’s more than just a story; it’s a guide for healing.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2021This book has great messaging for all ages from young to old. I really found comfort in the idea of reinforcing the importance of sharing memories of those you have lost openly and regularly. I also LOVED the opportunity to drift away and entertain the belief that your body is new again, free from pain and that you are forever young. Simple concept but provides great comfort during the grieving process even for us adults. The author provides many other life lessons throughout the book for all ages and keeps the reader engaged. It was a quick read and well worth the time! Loved it! I would highly recommend this book to anyone but especially to those new to experiencing grief due to the loss of a loved one.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2021I highly recommend this beautifully written story that can open the conversation about death for all ages, especially for preteens or kids who have lost a close friend or family member. The timing of this publication could not have been better, not only due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but also on a personal level with some family health concerns. The story of Cody and Ashley is well written, easy to read, and extremely captivating even as an adult. I read the entire book in a single sitting and plan to read it again to my elementary age children. I think they will find it interesting and I know it will open up a dialogue about death that I have been too scared to begin on my own. This fantastic story will provide my kids a comforting way to think about death, a way to understand and discuss their emotions around it, and most importantly it will give them with hope. I know this will make for a wonderful gift to my friends and family as well. To have written this during a pandemic and released it when so many of us needed a glimmer of hope for the future is absolutely amazing! Thank you so much!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2023This was the perfect book to help reframe my feelings of loss after my mother's death. A friend mentioned this book around the 1 year anniversary of her death. It came at the right time for me to reflect on the happy memories we created. I have a greater sense of peace than I did before. This book is for all ages. Thanks Sherrie!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2021Heaven’s Bell is a beautifully written and powerful story, providing a gentle way to open up the topic of death and grieving for families. The characters are deeply relatable and the narrative is full of comfort and hope for both those passing and those left behind. This book is very timely as many are dealing with grief as the result of Covid-19 and the pandemic. I recommend this book for adults, teens, kids, and for families to read and talk about together.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2021Heaven’s Bell is a sweet, thought-provoking book about friendship and loss with a unique glimpse at what heaven could be, ultimately told in a peaceful and comforting way. This book is a great way to create dialogue about death and loss with adolescents, but thoroughly enjoyable to read as an adult.
Well-written and creative, Heaven’s Bell is a lovely story of hope, promise and love and I would highly recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2021I heard rave reviews about this book from friends and thought it would be great to have on hand when my 7 year old son wanted to talk about death and Heaven. Ironically, right after purchasing, I lost someone very close to me. It’s certainly not the the first time I’ve encountered death, but this time it was different; it really made me think about life and Heaven in a different way. I initially bought this book thinking it would mainly serve as a conversation catalyst with my son, but today, I felt pulled to pick it up and read it myself. Barch’s storytelling and characterization is spot on. I could not put the book down, and only paused to wipe my tears. I cried, chuckled, cried some more, then, at the end, smiled peacefully like I got a comforting hug right from the book. I realized I needed this book as I navigate my own grief process. There were so many relatable moments as a mother, sibling, and a friend. I really appreciate how Barch included journal pages at the end to write memories. I know right when I finished her book, I had wonderful memories flooding out. This will definitely be my go-to book to buy for people experiencing the loss of a loved one.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2021I wasn't quite sure what to expect as I started reading this book but as I started to read it, I could not put it down! It is such a beautiful and comforting way to view what happens after we pass from this life. It is a book that is an easy read and a message that is very relevant for children and adults. Heaven's Bell gives the reader an appreciation for both life and death in a most grateful way.
