Product description

Garth Brooks ~ Scarecrow

Amazon.com

Nearly a decade ago, Garth Brooks's ability to incorporate '70s pop material and arena rock into his act made history (and controversy) as he propelled country to its pinnacle of success. One fact remains in 2001. When he simply rears back and sings (in the spirit of longtime pal Chris LeDoux), the results are often fresh and natural. That's the case on the Beatle-esque "Wrapped Up in You," "Thicker Than Blood," and the trite but catchy blue-collar bopper "Big Money." Alas, that slicker, more calculated material is never far away. Awash in melodrama, "The Storm" (a bathos-ridden variant on "The Thunder Rolls"), "Mr. Midnight," and "Pushing Up Daisies" each run four-plus minutes and seem longer. The hyperactive bluegrass romp "Don't Cross the River" seems less homage than a nod to the successful O Brother soundtrack. While duets with George Jones and Trisha Yearwood have merit, one wonders who really needs who. All this might have been cutting edge in 1992. Now it simply seems long in the tooth. --Rich Kienzle

As Garth Brooks first album release in quite a few years, this was highly anticipated. I don't think it will disappoint either. Garth is back to his old self with a well rounded offering of songs.
This album gives us a glimpse into the events that have been happening in his life over the past few years with deeply emotional songs like "Thicker Than Blood" and "Pushing Up Daisies".
He also offers his usual fun, upbeat, typical country songs, such as his duet with George Jone "Beer Run" and the drawl laden "Big Money". He also has a catchy duet with Trisha Yearwood "Squeeze Me In" that expresses alot of frustrated partners feelings of not being included.
He also offers up several heart wrenching, love sick ballads. My favorite being "When You Come Back To Me Again" the theme from the movie "Frequency".
"Wrapped Up In You" is the first release off of this album and I think it is a classic Garth song. "Why Ain't I Running" should be the next single as I think this also is very representative of typical Garth.
This is a must have Garth CD and if what he says is true, it will be his last. Savor every moment. It blends seamlessly with all the rest of his releases and makes a wonderful library of one of the greatest country artists of all time.

Cd arrived in perfect condition. I’ve been looking for this for years. It’s my favorite from him and I’m glad I finally have it. You’d never know it was “used.”

Great album from start to finish. I can relate to most every song. Garth has a knack about picking songs that his fans can understand.

Garth Brooks' first record of original material in four years is a solid effort, although it's not a spectacular one. On Scarecrow, the only song that really jumped out at me when I listened to the album the first time was the concluding number, "When You Come Back To Me Again", which was featured on the soundtrack of the movie "Frequency" and became a hit for Garth even before Scarecrow came out. Like a lot of Garth's ballads, "When You Come Back To Me Again" has some vivid word pictures("There's a ship out on the ocean at the mercy of the sea"). The other ballads didn't exactly excite me when I listened to the record at first, but they're still solid numbers. "Thicker Than Blood" is another well-written ballad, this time dealing with a tragedy, the loss of human life in an accident. "The Storm" is a picture of a broken marriage with the woman sitting alone in her house among the pieces of "broken glass and photographs" trying to figure out what went wrong while outside, a storm is swirling around her. "Mr. Midnight" is the story of a lonely late-night radio DJ. "Why Ain't I Running" is a song about the man's not wanting to get into a relationship with a woman too quickly while at the same time he is attracted to her. "Pushing Up Daisies" is a reminder to live life to its fullest. Do we do our best or do we merely settle back into a routine("pushing up daisies")?
The up-tempo songs are fun, although there is no standout among them. "Beer Run" is Garth's hit duet with his buddy and musical idol George Jones("B-double E-double Are You In?"). "Wrapped Up In You", Garth's current hit, is a funky tune that, interestingly, uses an acoustic arrangement. The bluesy harmonica parts are played by veteran Nashville session player Terry McMillan, who also appeared on Garth's smash hit from '93, "Ain't Going Down 'Til The Sun Comes Up". The pumping honky-tonk song "Big Money", the rodeo song "Rodeo or Mexico", and the bluegrassy toe-tapper "Don't Cross The River" are the other winning upbeat tunes here. "Rodeo or Mexico" sounds like a typical rodeo song by Garth until the last verse, where our hero wakes up with the "sharp end of a knife" pointed at him and realizes that the woman he had been in bed with was another man's wife. These songs are not the best songs Garth has recorded, but they're still pretty good ones, in my opinion. The only upbeat song on this record that I think is a real loser is Garth's duet with his long-time friend and frequent background vocalist, Trisha Yearwood. "Squeeze Me In", written by Delbert McClinton, is a washed-out pop song that not only doesn't sound country at all but is not that well-written. Even when Garth caved in to his pop instincts on his earlier records, he selected well-crafted songs and didn't stoop to the lowest common denominator, as I think he did on "Squeeze Me In".
In my opinion, Scarecrow overall is like the majority of Garth's records: a four-star album that could be five stars if it weren't for having one or more "garbage" songs, having songs that veer in the pop direction, or both. Despite its one "turkey" song, however, I think Scarecrow is worth listening to. Garth says that this is his farewell record, but like a lot of other Garth fans, I hope that isn't the case, although he says he wants to spend more time with his daughters. I hope Garth is merely taking a leave of absence and that Scarecrow is another chapter in what has been a strong career, rather than the concluding chapter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eines seiner besten Alben

5 Sterne

5 Sterne + 1 Sonderstern

Track 3 "Wrapped Up In You" kam als Single-Auskopplung heraus, ist für mich aber einer der Songs, der zwar nicht schlecht, aber eher im Mittelfeld des Rankings liegt, schaffte es aber dennoch in die Top Ten der Billboard Country Charts. 3,5 Sterne.

Track 4 "The Storm" ist wiederum bärenstark und beim Hören drängt sich unweigerlich eine Paralelle zu "The Thunder Rolls" aus dem 90er Album "No Fences" auf. 5 Sterne + 1 Sonderstern

"Thicker Than Blood", Track Nr. 5, passt kompositorisch und textlich genau zwischen "Wrapped Up In You" und "The Storm". Starker Titel, deshalb 5 Sterne

"Big Money", die Nummer 6 auf der CD, ist nicht soooo sehr mein Geschmack, weil ich den Track von der Komposition für nicht sehr gelungen und eher als(notwendigen?) Filler auf dem Album sehe. Maximal 3 Sterne...

"Squeeze Me In", Track Nr. 7 ist wiederum ein Duett, diesmal mit TRISHA YEARWOOD, seiner zweiten Ehefrau. Recht flott und gut, aber erreicht nicht ganz die Klasse von z. B. "In Another's Eyes", einer Brooks-Yearwood-Single-Auskopplung aus dem Album "Songbook - The Collection". 4,5 Sterne

Song Nr. 8 "Mr. Midnight" ist sehr, sehr ruhig, knapp über 4 Minuten lang und differiert etwas im Vergleich zu den restlichen Album Songs, in die er sich (stilmäßig) nicht ganz einordnen lässt. 4 Sterne

"Pushing Up Daisies", Track 9, ist ein sehr persönlicher Song von Garth, in dem er sich auch textlich mit dem Tod seiner Mutter
auseinandersetzt. Kompositorisch aber durchaus Country. 4 Sterne.

"Rodeo Or Mexico", das 10te Stück, ist fetzig-fröhlich, was sowohl für Melodie als auch die Lyrics gilt. Macht gute Laune und darum 5 Sterne.

Die Nummer 11, "Don't Cross The River" ist eine Bluegrass durchsetzte Cover-Version eines Doyle Lawson/Quicksilver-Songs und hält das Gesamt-Niveau der CD. 4 Sterne.

Letzer Song auf dem Album ist "When You Come Back To Me", der Titelsong zum Film "Frequency". Up In You" & "The Storm".
