Fatal Infatuation (Almost Human - The First Trilogy Book 1) Kindle Edition
Shy Felicity never expected to attract the attention of a handsome young man... or a vampire, but if she can keep them both from killing each other she’ll need all the help she can get to navigate discoveries of desire; perils of zombies and vampires; and struggles with friendship, morality and...college.
Cain is an elder vampire who displays quiet confidence even as he struggles to overcome sins of his past. Surprisingly, he found that in losing his life he gained his faith and a purpose. His mission: find the hostile vampires that inhabit this small college town, and educate them to live in peace with humans. Their leader, Sindy, is a wicked temptress who has set her sights on Felicity's new friend Ben. She will be difficult to control, but after meeting Felicity, Cain's most difficult task lies in controlling himself.

After graduating from high school, Felicity is looking forward to beginning her new life away at college, and away from her small- town mundane existence. She wants to become a more social person, someone who does not hide within her shell around others. And what better place than college for her to do so? Felicity acquires a job at The DownTime Café and Bookstore and quickly makes friends with Ben, an employee at The DownTime and fellow student at the college. However, her adventure into independence is about to take a supernatural turn . . . for there is more at stake than her sociability.
Cain is a three-hundred-forty-year-old vampire who has chosen to live his life without killing humans and offers his knowledge to other vampires who wish to accept his ways. Unfortunately, some newly made vampires are wreaking havoc among the human population of this college town and the one making all the chaos is Sindy. She was a spoiled brat as a human and even more conniving as a vampire. Right now, she wants nothing more than to be claimed by Cain, but a human female has already caught his eye. Cain is infatuated with Felicity and will do anything to protect her, but will Sindy devise a plan to end the passionate connection developing between vampire and human? Or will Felicity and her new friends take matters into their own hands, to rid the town of the zombie-like creatures living there?
Fatal Infatuation is truly a "labor of love" dream, and this is just the beginning of the series for author Melanie Nowak. It's evident that Melanie has put her heart in soul into creating vivid characters, detailed scenery, and an intricately designed plot, all which come together to make a beautiful and interesting love story between human and vampire. Not only does the reader acquire the sense the intense attraction and growing passion between Cain and Felicity, but Melanie also passed that same feeling onto all her characters. And the best part about this story is the unique twist Melanie has given the Vampires, hence the name Venomous Vampires. Almost Human: Fatal Infatuation Vol. 1, is beyond doubt a series to be read by anyone who is devoted to supernatural romance, and of course, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. ( And yes, I had to mention Buffy! =) ) Keep in mind, this is a planned series of successive trilogies, not stand-alone books. Each trilogy is meant to be read in order, as the story unfolds and the characters continue with each book. You will NOT be disappointed! A MUST READ!
You are introducted to the main and secondary characters and provided with enough info to make up feel comfortable to join them in the cafe for a cup of coffee or pop (or soda for some). Cain, however, you will want more, as he is such an enigma; what is his past, who is he really? By the end of the book you will be wanting to read the next one to find out what happens to everyone.
Although the book is not an action packed drama, neither is it boring. The pace is accurate for each setting. Listening (or rather reading) the conversations, sentence structure between the kids (hey, I am 54, I see anyone under 25 as a kid) is similar to what my daughter and her friends talk about, and they are in their mid 20s. These kids sounded like normal kids, not some faked conservation.
I have read reviews that compared Ms Nowak to Ms Myers. From what I know, Ms Nowak wrote her books before Ms Myers but the publishing companies felt that vampire books wouldn't be of interest, hummm, just a tad bit off in that aspect. I have read Twilight, and although it is a nice book, well, it is also VERY young. I felt the kids in the Harry Potter series were more mature.
In Book one there is no sex, and for me that was a little off, I enjoy a good erotic book, not wild, wild money sex, but some steam. If you don't want some info about book 2, skip on down, but I dont' think I give away too much.
**************************************************************
In Book two the pace was faster, the dialogue just as well written. The first book was slower due to it laying the foundation, most series are like that; you have to build the foundation before you can get to the meat of the series. In this book we learn of Cain's background, his past. I liked the way that part of it ended. Cain finishes telling Felicity about his past, she is looking at him, shocked, unable to say anything and then he takes her back to the dorm and leaves as the sun starts to rise.
She goes home to visit and there has to examine not only what he has told her but what she now sees; his past behaviors and his present behaviors and make a decision. Cain, meanwhile is also struggling, what will Felicity do, will she ever speak to him again? Other aspects are introduced; some background on Sindy, why she was the way she was, her sad past. We learn more about Ben, what his thinking is like, more of his character, more about Allie, and more about Ashley (how shallow she is, no surprise there). This book has more depth and it also has some sex in it.
*************************************************************
The negative aspects of the books. Most of this is from a personal nature, I happen to like my vampires to be more than human -- to have super strengths, have special abilities, so that I missed. I would also have liked more steam in the bedroom, up a notch or two. It didn't take away from the book, it is still a well written book. Other areas; I wondered about the people living in the area, if Ben and Allie knew about vampires didn't others? Why didn't the police examine more about the people who had died? And the zombies that were being created, some people had to be seeing some of this going on, but no mention was made of that. The football players -- okay, I can accept that they would be seen as having gone off without a word on some adventure, but wouldn't they have been seen around the campus by students at night as they roamed, searching for food? Cain mentions somewhere that if it comes to a fight, he can take Arif as he, Cain, is older. Yet, he was unable to take on Marcus. What was the difference?
These are trival questions, they do not take away from the good writing skills of Ms Nowak. They could well be answered later on, or they are probably so trival that it doesn't matter.
I am looking forward to buying and reading book three, and these will be on my keeper shelves.
