Gravity Filtering SystemOpen the wide mouth cap and fill the bag with water from any source — lake, stream, faucet, etc. — and connect the included tube between the bladder and the Dual-Threaded MINI. After filling, hang the reservoir with the MINI below it from a tree, the back of your pack, or simply hold it up with your hand. Water will flow through the MINI to produce fresh, clean water for drinking and cooking. |
Filtered Water AnywhereFitting in the palm of your hand, the Dual-Threaded MINI gives you several ways to access clean water. With threads on both sides, you can attach the flip top cap onto the MINI for easy on/off functionality while filtering to control water flow. The filter can also be attached onto most disposable water or soda bottles, or attach it inline to tubing between a hydration pack and bite valve. |
Filter Again and AgainThe Dual-Threaded MINI can be cleaned and reused almost indefinitely with no expensive cartridges to replace… ever. When water flow begins to diminish, simply perform a backwash to restore up to 98% of the filter’s flow rate and enjoy fresh, clean water wherever you roam. |
Sawyer's International MissionSawyer believes everyone deserves access to clean water — from hikers in the backcountry to indigenous people groups in the remotest corners of the world. For over 10 years, Sawyer has been working with a variety of charities and churches who are on a mission to make a long-lasting impact in the lives of those around the world without access to clean drinking water. |

Hollow Fiber MembraneSawyer’s water filters are comprised of tiny hollow fiber membranes that allow water to enter their core through tiny micro-pores. Thicker fiber walls combined with a smaller inner diameter make Sawyer fibers 75% stronger* than typical hollow fiber membranes, giving you a fast flow and enabling the filter to be continually backwashed forcefully to restore up to 98% of the original flow rate. * Clean Water Institute of Calvin University; July, 2018 |
0.1 Absolute Micron FilteringEach Sawyer water filter features 0.1 micron absolute filtration, meaning there is no pore size larger than 0.1 micron in size. This makes it nearly impossible for microplastics, harmful bacteria, protozoa, or cysts like E. coli, Giardia, Vibrio cholerae, and Salmonella typhi (which cause Cholera and Typhoid) to pass through. |
Fiber ProtectionSawyer's hollow fiber membranes are fully encased and sealed to keep them protected. When fibers are not enclosed, physical damage of exposed fibers could allow harmful pathogens to pass through. |
Tested 3 TimesEvery Sawyer filter is performance tested three separate times during the manufacturing process for your protection. Testing occurs after the fiber element construction and twice after casing assembly to ensure no harmful pathogens leak through the sealed case or internal O-rings. |

Product Description
A lightweight, robust solution for filtering large quantities of water, Sawyer's Gravity System with Dual-Threaded MINI filter is ideal for backpacking, backcountry camping, and emergency preparedness. Available in two models, the 1-Gallon Gravity System (SP160) comes with one bag and a MINI, while the 1-Gallon Dual Bladder Gravity System (SP2160) comes with two bags (one for dirty water, one for clean) and a MINI. The Sawyer dual-threaded MINI water filter weighs just 2 ounces, fits in the palm of your hand, and is rated to 0.1 micron absolute filtration — removing 99.99999% of all bacteria, such as salmonella, cholera, and E.coli, and removing 99.9999% of all protozoa (such as giardia and cryptosporidium). The MINI also filters out 100% of microplastics. With threads on both sides, you can screw the flip top cap onto the MINI for easy on/off functionality while filtering. Convenient and easily packable, this single- and dual-bag gravity system doesn’t require any pumping and is perfect for camping, hunting, fishing, scouting, disaster relief, and emergency preparedness kits, as well as on adventure travel excursions where potable tap and bottled water are not easily carried or safe to drink. The 1-gallon bladders feature a wide mouth cap that allows for fast and easy filling, as well as a convenient carry handle. To set up a gravity system, first fill the reservoir with water from any source (a lake, stream, pond, glacier, kitchen faucet, etc.). Hang the bag — from a tree, the back of your pack, or hold it up with your hand — and connect the MINI to the included hose and let gravity do its work. Water will flow through the MINI to produce fresh, clean water for drinking and cooking. The SP2160 Dual Bladder Gravity System includes a second "Clean Water" 1-gallon reservoir to hold your filtered water. The SP160 package includes a dual-threaded MINI water filter, 1-gallon bladder, cleaning plunger, and gravity hose with adapters. It also comes with Sawyer's Cleaning Coupling accessory. The SP2160 package includes a dual-threaded MINI water filter, dirty water bladder, clean water bladder, tube adapter with shutoff clamp, inline adapters, tube adapter, long tube, hanging strap with S-biner, cleaning plunger, cleaning coupling, flip top cap, and hose guide. Since 1984, Sawyer has used technological advancements to create products that keep you outdoors — from the backcountry to the backyard — including insect repellents for both skin and clothing, water filters for camping and emergencies, and sun protection.

In the pictures, the green thing on the bucket is a homemade deal (made from a pill bottle) to keep the tubing from pinching at the edge of the bucket, with rubber band to keep it in place
The CONS: as other reviews state- we couldn’t fill the bladder all the way up. It was also hard to hang at an appropriate angle to ensure ALL the water came out- we ended up holding/tilting it a little but that could also have been because of our hanging options.
It’s a little slower than ideal, but not bad!
The pros: it holds so much water & does the job right. It isn’t hard to use. It makes having filtered water very easy. We filtered into 3 bag so we just had a supply on hand at any point during our weekend camping trip. & then left it up again to filter into water bottles, too.
The only downside is trying to fill the reservoir from shallow or standing water. This is where pump filters have the advantage, since all you have to do is throw in the line and start pumping. However, when you consider the low cost and weight savings, this is by far the better choice. I carried a cheap plastic water bottle I purchased from a gas station just before the trip, and filled up that bottle with dirty water and bailed it into the Sawyer reservoir. This worked extremely well, and then I just collapsed the empty bottle and stuffed it into the lid of my pack. Even if you can't find a place to hang the system, it's very easy to screw the filter directly onto the bag and squeeze clean water into a drink bottle or bladder system.
Save yourself some money, some ounces, and time by ditching the pump and let gravity do the work! I love my Katadyn, but I think it will collect dust for a long time since the Sawyer has a place in my pack now.
Update 7/27/18: I just used this filter on a 3 night trip for a total of six people. We used the filter at least 3 times per day. During the 2nd day of use the filter slowed down considerably, but it was still easier than pumping. I would suggest back flushing the filter after every gallon when filtering for larger groups.
Also, we used the sea to summit lightweight bucket to get water from a nearby lake, then dumped the water into the Sawyer bladder. This system worked great because we didn't have to move the gravity filter and the water was easier to retrieve using the bucket.
