The Art and Science of EMDR: Helping Clinicians Bridge the Path from Protocol to Practice Paperback – April 10, 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
The EMDR model is linear—real EMDR is not.
Therapists who are trained in EMDR can facilitate healing in the most profound ways. But successful treatment requires more than following a rigid script or a protocol. It requires bringing both the art and science of EMDR into the therapy room.
In The Art and Science of EMDR, clinicians will learn how to do just that. Grounded in the principles of neurobiology and the science of deliberate practice, this book teaches both new and seasoned EMDR clinicians how to apply the phase-based model of EMDR in a more holistic way. Instead of conceptualizing EMDR in an inflexible and linear manner, clinicians will learn how to adapt the protocol to each client’s needs while maintaining authenticity to the model (and to who they are as therapists and humans).
Whether you are an EMDR trainer, consultant, or practitioner, this user-friendly guide will help you:
- Understand a client’s presenting problems through the lens of neuroscience
- Identify and overcome common mistakes during preparation and resourcing
- Individualize a client’s inner resources
- Develop regular mindfulness habits that improve client outcomes
- Bring more fluidity to the assessment phase
- Set the groundwork for effective processing and learn when to intervene
- Bring the principles of deliberate practice to EMDR trainings and consultations

Editorial Reviews
Review
“As an EMDR trainer, I always felt there was a need for a book that explained EMDR and its underlying neurology in easy-to-understand language. Rotem Brayer has created the perfect book that lives somewhere between Shapiro’s foundational text and the EMDR training manual. I will be recommending The Art and Science of EMDR to every therapist I train.” ―Andrew Dobo, PhD, EMDRIA approved trainer and author of The Hero’s Journey: Integrating Jungian Psychology and EMDR Therapy and Unburdening Souls at the Speed of Thought
---
“Rotem Brayer has artfully managed to welcome EMDR clinicians into the dialogue about the science of EMDR, while simultaneously empowering them to trust their own humanity as healers. This is a much-needed addition to the canon of EMDR literature!” ―Marshall Lyles, LMFT-S, LPC-S, RPT-S, EMDR consultant and coauthor of Advanced Sandtray Therapy: Digging Deeper into Clinical Practice
---
“The Art and Science of EMDR is a robust, practical resource for any EMDR therapist searching for a deeper understanding of this powerful type of therapy in an easy-to-digest format. Rotem Brayer has created a clinical staple for us with this one!” ―Jackie Flynn, EdS, LMHC-S, RPT, EMDR certified, EMDRIA approved consultant
---
“The Art and Science of EMDR is a breath of fresh air, a call to the future from the new generation of EMDR practitioners, trainers, and consultants, willing and able to develop and grow this therapy in every direction it now needs to go. Full of practical ideas and invitations, from therapist self-care and mindfulness/meditation to neuroscience and interweaves for challenging clients, Rotem Brayer’s approach invites especially the more newly trained therapist to make EMDR their own, grounded in Shapiro’s core structure but embracing the relationship and the dance―the art indeed, as well as the science. This book is well worth adding to the frontline therapist’s toolkit.” ―Mark Brayne, EMDR consultant and author of Unleash Your EMDR: Release the Magic: A Guidebook for Attachment-Informed, Integrative, Transpersonal EMDR
---
“The much-anticipated book The Art and Science of EMDR is a natural extension of what many clinicians who have followed his podcast have come to appreciate about Rotem Brayer: a curious and heartfelt integration of both the scientific and interpersonal elements of good therapy. Rotem is not bewildered by the complexity of the neuroscience that underpins all we love about EMDR therapy, and he takes a conversational and highly readable tone throughout. In particular, the chapters on mindfulness and an attuned processing approach hold the promise of demystifying and deprotocolizing solid EMDR practice for the reader. An excellent tool for EMDR consultants as well!” ―Ann Beckley-Forest, LCSW-R, RPT-S, EMDR approved consultant and trainer, and coeditor of EMDR with Children in the Play Therapy Room: An Integrated Approach
---
“This book feels like having an EMDR coach in your pocket. Rotem Brayer takes you through each phase and tells you the truth about what can happen during EMDR. As I read through The Art and Science of EMDR I kept thinking, I never knew this, this is so interesting, and this graphic helps explain this concept. This book is a beautiful roadmap to working with EMDR. I’m so grateful to Brayer for generously creating this and giving so much helpful information!” ―Jocelyn Fitzgerald, LMFT, ATR-BC, EMDR consultant and coauthor and coeditor of EMDR Creative Arts Therapies
---“The Art and Science of EMDR is a must-have for EMDR-trained therapists who are looking to gain confidence in their facilitation of EMDR with clients. This easy-to-read book can help therapists educate clients about EMDR, as well as deepen their own understanding of the EMDR process. The Art and Science of EMDR is going to be my first recommendation for newly trained EMDR therapists looking to enhance their understanding, practice, and confidence in providing EMDR therapy.” ―Stephanie Heitkemper, PhD, LPC, RPT, FT, EMDR certified and EMDRIA approved consultant

- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2023As an EMDR therapist, EMDRIA Approved Consultant and someone who has had the pleasure of working multiple EMDR basic trainings - I highly, highly recommend "The Art and Science of EMDR" by Rotem Brayer. I am passionate about EMDR and absolutely love learning everything I can about this subject, as well as teaching others what I learn.
Here is why I love and appreciate Rotem's book so much -
1. Basic training can be overwhelming to new EMDR clinicians - there are a lot of concepts and steps to implementing EMDR. I have found from providing consultation to these clinicians that this leads to an avoidance of using it all together. This book not only helps explain and simplify some of the complex concepts, but also empowers the clinician to apply these concepts.
2. It is a short and easy to read book. So many books out there - some great, some not so much are long and textbook like. It can be difficult to find the time to get through them. I was able to read this book in two days between clients. The best part was it is EASY to understand and applicable!!
3. Even if you have been practicing EMDR for many years - it is still a must read! I found it helpful to learn new ways to explain things, a great refresher on concepts and overall just a wonderful way to expand EMDR skills.
I have recommended it to all my consultees as a must read!!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2023You know when you really want a piece of chocolate cake so you order it and when it comes its a small sliver and you experience a small jolt of disappointment, thinking this tiny piece isn’t going to meet your chocolate needs? Then you start eating it and it’s so dense, so rich, that you have to eat it slowly, savor every bite and even end up taking some of it home—-that’s this book. I thought it was going to be a quick read; it wasn’t because I wanted to/needed to digest all the great information in it slowly. I’ve read quite a few EMDR books—this is the first that has acknowledged that EMDR is a fluid process and not a rigid one. I especially appreciated the suggestions about integrating somatic work and mindfulness into the preparation phase. Rotem’s take on things has given me a fresh perspective and has given me quite a bit of food for thought. He explains things thoroughly but in a way that’s easy to understand. Whether you're new to EMDR or a seasoned EMDR provider, this book is a must read. I know I will be rereading it many times over.

A highlight of Rottem's approach is bridging the gap between protocol and practice, offering valuable insights for both seasoned and newly trained EMDR therapists. It is an essential resource for anyone wanting to take their EMDR skills to the next level!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2023I recently had the pleasure of reading "The Art and Science of EMDR" by Rotem Brayer, and I must say, it was a breath of fresh air compared with books by other authors. Rotem Brayer's book was much easier to read and understand.
The book broke down complex concepts and made them accessible to readers of all backgrounds. Brayer clearly and concisely explains the theory behind EMDR therapy, and offers practical advice on how to apply it in clinical settings.
What I appreciated most about this book is that it didn't just regurgitate the basics of EMDR; it offered new insights and tools.
Overall, I highly recommend "The Art and Science of EMDR" to anyone interested in learning more about this powerful therapeutic technique. Whether you're a seasoned practitioner or just starting out, this book is sure to provide you with valuable insights and strategies to help you enhance your EMDR practice.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2024I really appreciated this book for a lot of reasons. As an EMDR trained therapist a year in, I have often questioned whether or not I was doing it right despite consultation and reading and watching all the videos I possibly could. This book really helped me to slow down a bit. I like that this book was short and just gets to the point. It was an encouraging read!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2024A clear, very helpful and very attachment sensitive book. As the subtitle declairs, it realy is a valueble resource for clinicians who wish to adjust emdr protocol to the differential needs of their clients.
It's deep insights helps me navigate and focus my interventions, and improve my practice. Highly recomended. (:
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2024Not a big reviewer but felt compelled to share that this book is an excellent read for new and stuck EMDR clinicians. It was an easy, accessible read that helped me better understand the protocol, as well as suggestions and tips I could immediately put into use.
Unique to this book is the underscoring of the importance of consistent mindfulness practice for clients AND clinicians, as well as the concept of improvement through deliberate practice. Again, excellent.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2023Rotem's book unquestionably stands out as the most invaluable and accessible resource on EMDR that I have ever come across. To be honest, I was so captivated by it that I simply couldn't tear myself away. Even practitioners who haven't obtained EMDR certification would greatly benefit from Rotem's eloquent depiction of the profound interplay between the brain and body, though it's important to note that they should refrain from attempting EMDR without proper training. Rotem also does an incredible job presenting advanced scientific terms and explanations in a way that are non intimidating and speak to the masses

5.0 out of 5 stars Accessible and sensible
As an Emdr Consultant I’ve recommended this to a few of my supervisees. It has bite sized chapters which is brilliant and non-nonsense language. It explains how you can take your emdr to the next level by being aware of the basic protocol alongside rationale and theory for being flexible with it. A great addition to anyone’s book shelf (which you are very likely to actually read to the end of!!)

This book offers insight and confidence to EMDR practitioners and those whom may have an interest in learning more around this topic. If you have completed the EMDR training and are struggling to utilise it in your daily practice with clients - this is the book for you. It embraces a creative and permission giving approach to working safely and wisely with EMDR. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down.

1.0 out of 5 stars Damaged, so disappointed ☹️
The book does not look nor feel new, although I bought it as new. Very disappointing buy, the damage does not seem as if it was caused in transit as you can tell the difference between general damage and damage due to transit/delivery. So disappointed🙁
