The Unsuspecting Heather Meyers: A Redemptive Love Story Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 65 ratings

What if you’ve returned home to start your life over, only to discover you’re there to finish it?

Ready for a fresh start, Heather Meyers flees from not-so-sunny California to her hometown in Indiana. But fate has other plans—stage IV cancer and three months to live. Determined that one more kick from life won’t destroy her faith, Heather fights against its schemes. Before she can take her final rest, redemption must be found for someone she loves.

Physical therapist Dr. Jack Jones (JJ) would do anything to change the past, to not have let his high school sweetheart get away. Now that Heather’s back, he’d do anything to keep her from leaving. With her time running out, he may never get his chance to set things right.

By a twist of fate and with an extra dab of this and a little bit of that, nurse Anna Ingram sets out to prove that JJ is more than his past mistakes and Heather can find hope and love in the midst of the biggest battle of her life.

Shawna is a contemporary fiction author who enjoys writing a little bit of the unexpected. Why be normal? In a world of conformity, a touch of something out of the ordinary can make a work of art astonishing.

Shawna loves all things chocolate especially a warm cup of hot chocolate and sea salt caramel truffles. She is the mother of four, a preschool owner and teacher, a former children's minister, and the wife of a navy veteran. Whether it's singing the ABCs, sharing what she's learned with new writers, or passing along Bible truths to her children ministry classes, she's a teacher at heart.

When I read Shawna Robison Young’s The Unsuspecting Heather Myers, I found myself in places I did not expect to be.

Families are messy. We forget this, but Young looks straight into the mess to watch God work to clean it up. In unexpected ways.

The Jones family is a mess. Anger and bitterness for good reason. Divorce. Bad choices in the past for JJ coming to affect him now.

Heather Meyers is a mess. Cancer. JJ back in her life. In a New York moment I’d tell her, “Move away from him, Woman.” Except she seriously needs him.

And the book has a touch of the supernatural … “an extra dab of this and a little bit of that.” I’m not a big supernatural fan, but this part of the novel left me charmed. That extra dab was sweet and demonstrated Young’s rich imagination in showing God at work in the lives of the Joneses and Myers.

I’d love to tell more. But instead, read the book and enjoy the unsuspected and unexpected as I did.

Be prepared for an emotional journey. Not only did I feel that I got to know every character, I also loved the sense of homecoming and redemption. Shawna delved into topics rarely discussed, but that many people face. As a nurse, I appreciate your ability to write about death, dying and hospice care. My heart melted over this love story. Excellent read.

Wow, what an engaging, emotional read. I am a big fan of redemption stories, and this one did not disappoint. I love how the author wove the story - it wasn't a straightforward "he/she's a mess...story...he/she's transformed", but rather it had many twists and turns - along with a touch of fantasy. This book had me turning pages to see what would happen next! I can't wait to follow this author to see what's next on her book shelf! Don't miss this one.

I’m a slow reader and I couldn’t put this book down! I finished it in 3 sittings. Very well written. The author pulls you in from page 1. I’m not a writer myself, so don’t have the words to express how good this story is. You will not be disappointed!

This inspired and unique debut novel from Shawna Young masterfully breaks the mold of women's fiction with some unexpected turns that will keep you on your toes until the last page, offering just a taste of the speculative genre from a faith perspective. The book does a good job at approaching heavy topics of heartbreak, unresolved mistakes, and search for hope in ways that uplift. I look forward to more from this author!
