Richie The Caseworker Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 18 ratings

Richie McGinn's life is as unglamourous as it could get. Working a dead-end job delivering pizzas in the busy streets of Yonkers, his only real joy comes from watching the Yankees with his brother - whenever they can afford it, that is. But when his boss sends him out on a delivery to a homeless shelter, Richie starts to feel like maybe there are other options out there for him, and when Pizza Palace closes down, it turns out to be the kick in the butt he needs to take the plunge. But being a caseworker ends up being a completely new ballgame, and it's one he has no idea how to play.

A poignant coming-of-age novel, for anyone leaving college and still trying to find their place in the world.

This book is an unexpected delight. Not the typical genre that I would normally pick up, it brought me back to simpler times and I felt myself growing in outlook along with the main character; dare I say, learning something about human nature. Fun and engaging, I couldn’t wait to find out how things turned out. A home run by this first time author!

This is an engaging novel: the scenes and dialogue complement each other perfectly to make for a flying read. Richie's life in transition highlights the joys and trials of family life that are mysteriously simultaneous. The baseball scenes are masterfully narrated and the comradery among Richie's coworkers, combined with the difficulties they deal with, could catalyze a sit-com or television series.

I really enjoyed this book. I am not a fan of baseball but there was so much more to this book than talking about the Yankees. All the characters came alive and the situations were very heartbreaking and heartwarming. The main character Ritchie really steps up to the plate (no pun intended). He learns what it means to be a real human being and get his priorities straight. I would recommend this book.

Richie the Caseworker is a great read. I don’t enjoy watching sports. But I liked this book. I’m from The Bronx, so I got my fill of loving and hating the Yankees. But I liked this book. It felt like watching a TV show like The Office or an independent film. It’s edgy and really funny. Richie is human. He’s not perfect and that’s his and the book’s charm.

I found this book to be a page-turner that I didn’t want to put down. I flew through it. It opened my eyes to the complexities of life in the field of social work. I loved the baseball references and the sense of hope that I found in the book. I highly recommend it.
