Not so with "Tyrants of the Underdark"! The gameplay is fluid, and easy to understand. The turns are fast, and the game is exciting.
For the last year, every morning over coffee, we'd been playing a 3-game series of "Race For The Galaxy" because we love that deck builder so much. But we learned this game in our inaugural playthrough last week, and now we're hooked. Each morning for the last seven days, we've played a complete game of "Tyrants of the Underdark" in about an hour each time, and we love it!
This is a second printing of the game, and with it, the publishers have made the game less expensive to own, fit in a smaller box, and included all of the game's separate expansions within this one set!
The supply deck is made by combining your choice of 2 out of 6 sets of differently themed half-decks, giving players 30 possible different combinations for a game.
If you crave the deluxe experience you could try to track down a copy of the original printing which came with plastic figures for all of the spies and troops, and buy the expansion decks separately, but I feel it unnecessary with this set.
The only downside is this set is all cardboard punch out tokens, and the playing cards feel a bit on the cheap side. I imagine if they ever got wet they would be instantly ruined. But in exchange you get a fantastic compete and deep game that is easy to play. You can complete the game with great satisfaction in about an hour with 2 people. I'm sure it's even more fun with 3 or 4. We hope to find out soon with our gaming friends.
Perhaps if this game becomes popular enough, they might consider a third printing with better quality linen cards. The punch out tokens are plenty thick and work just fine.
I wholeheartedly recommend this game to any nerd board gaming enthusiast. It is just so much fun.
Anyway, it's a fun game, you could select 2 decks from 6 decks to create your market, and it will decide incoming playing focus. The game is similar as star realm to use resource purchasing more cards, and discard those basic one for easier to get better one. Plus root style area control to decide where you setup troops for obtaining more resource from famous underdark cities. While doing that, you could also kill your enemy and natural armies for more VP. Overall, it's a game worth to spend time to play if you like a game including D&D topic, deck build, and area control features to create the most power drow house in the underdark.
But once familiar with some terms of keywords, I found the rule isn't complex.
Main goal of this game is to control the sites of the Underdark in many ways. (I think it's not necessary being a tyrant...)
Through taking various actions, you'll get VPs by your minions, sites, enemy trophies.
Game's pace is pretty fast, so it's very funny.
The only downsides worth mentioning are that it is only playable with up to four people and some of the rules are a bit ambiguous, but anyone with board game/RPG experience should be able to adjust accordingly without much difficulty. Then the card stock and rule book are a little on the cheap/flimsy side, but would only become an issue after heavy use.
All-in-all, the games detractors aren't worth dropping the rating a star, it's lots of fun.
-The artwork on the cards and pieces is pretty good and tries to stay true to the theme
-if you’re indifferent to the underdark or dark elf themed stuff in general then I’m not sure I would recommend it at full price

Only downside: unlike original version (2016), this re-release comes with cardboard tokens instead of plastic minis
