Nix Sensor in the beginning
With Nix, professionals who work with color are empowered with fast, reliable accuracy. Fan decks and eyeballing color are no more.
-
The idea for Nix came in the form of a question: why are interior designers still carrying around tote bags filled with heavy fan decks and swatch books from individual brands? Why were professionals still eyeballing color?
After our initial funding and countless prototypes later, the final Nix prototype was born. It was through our successful Kickstarter campaign that we were able to fund the production of the first Nix Color Sensor.

The NIX team was wonderful in figuring out what could be wrong. After some back and forth, they sent me a replacement and it connected IMMEDIATELY! There was not a hesitation or lag at all. The last one must have been faulty. And what is also interesting is that when I scanned the same paint sample as before with the last faulty one, this new one came up with totally different color names and options. So, I'm now hopeful it will continue to connect easily and be as accurate as I think it will be.
UPDATE: ONE STAR.
This device is nearly IMPOSSBLE to connect. It's just ridiculous. It's too bad because when I do get it to connect, it's quite accurate (see below). But, this device is wayyyyyy toooooo difficult to connect and it's really frustrating. I tried turning on and off the bluetooth numerous times, trying to connect it, then restarting the app, over and over and over. TERRIBLE. So, I now give it ONE STAR.
I'm surprised how accurate this new version is. I watched a video with someone who grabbed a bunch of random paint samples at a store, brought them home and scanned each of them to see how accurate it was. He found it to be accurate - exactly the paint sample name - 9 out of 10 times. The other time the second choice was the correct paint sample name. I tried the same thing and it was accurate about 90% of the time. What could be the issue in some cases is that the name of the paint may have changed, and it has an old name - or even maybe the samples at the store were outdated. I did notice that it had a bit harder time getting whites exact, which is what the one person in the video also said. But even then, I would definitely recommend this if you're needing to match colors or even see colors out there that you like and want to use somewhere.
Last time we did this, we had to guess from the little paint chips, then paint some samples, and still it was hard to imagine what it would look like covering a whole house.
This time was different. We started by looking at houses instead of paint chips; our neighborhood became a living catalog of house colors. One day my wife came home and said she'd seen the perfect color on a house a few miles away. She drove me there and I loved it too - it was just perfect and it looked great on a house of about our size and era.
That's where the Nix Mini 3 came in. One Saturday afternoon, we went on a "color heist" - our goal was to get the paint, trim, and shutter colors in Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams before the owner could refuse. We approached the house, and my wife knocked on the door to ask "permission." By the time she rang the doorbell, I had all the colors on my phone! Nobody was home, oh well ... we had the colors!
Then we bought a quart just to be sure and it looks fabulous, first try! It was certainly worth the cost of this handy gadget to nail the color, especially compared to the cost of the rest of the project. The Nix found all our interior colors as well, so we won't have to remember what we painted where. Definitly a good purchase! that
The unit only has a 1 year warranty if purchased from an approved vendor. I was out of this window and offered a 10% discount off purchasing a new unit.
I probably used this thing once every 6 months and the battery died (no longer charges) in less than 2 years. If I charged it every few months would the battery have lasted longer? Probably... but that is quite a hassle and doesn't fit with what I'll argue is going to be the use pattern of most users.
I consider this a design flaw that just leads to more unnecessary e-waste. Even new the charging aspect of this thing was annoying.. the user manual says 3 hours to fully charge! Why not at least allow the unit to be used with an external battery pack if the internal battery dies?
Software-wise I bought this before the Nix Toolkit app came out (they had one app for paint and one for color numbers.. now it is just one app). All of my swatches from the previous app weren't exported/lost which was annoying.
All this being said when it worked I did find it to be a very useful tool. It struggled with light yellow color paints but got me close enough to pick up a few swatches to verify a color before buying a gallon+ to paint a room.

Can give a rough color code.
If you have something white and want to find the color, just go buy new paint.
I took the plunge and thought if it doesnt work, we have tried but it could save him a lot of unnecessary running around.
The delivery was prompt with amazon prime as usual and the set up of the scanner was super easy with the phone app.
Well, what can we say. The results initially seemed like the shades were showing darker. But using then some tester booklets and scanning colours that we knew what they were, the matches were 100%, including the paint brand and colour name.
What my husband did say that what one would need to keep in mind that certain paint brands just dont do exact matches that you may need. So you need to know your way around different companies and adjust your search result accordingly. For example shade X may be an exact match from Farrow&Ball or Johnsons but may not be available from Dulux.
All in all the job that he did ended up being very quick because of the paint matches worked and the client was very happy.
We hope the scanner will last and will be a great investment for years to come in regular use. Thank you
