If your dog releases it with the cord stretched, you will have a dangerous projectile flying towards you. The Flirt Pole is not designed to be used as a tug toy. Never let your dog play with the Flirt Pole unsupervised. It will not survive as a chew toy. Always put it away after use. Do not allow your dog to chew on the bungee cord. We got this toy because our dog has a pretty high prey drive, and we really wanted to fulfill her needs. She loves it! She is a chewer, but she is able to release the toy for us to keep playing. The fabric is super durable, so the only thing that our dog has damaged is the little squeakers inside the fabric. And the toy is so fun for her that she really doesn’t need the squeakers. I love that the lure can be replaced, so we’ll be looking into that soon.

I find that very few products really live up to the hype and reviews online, but I actually can’t say enough good things about this product. My dog absolutely loves it. If you follow their directions, it should last a long time. I keep treats on hand to encourage my pup to give it up without chewing it much (just enough to keep him happy and wanting more). And I get the cord out of his mouth as soon as I can too. They are not kidding about your dog being able to hurt themselves if you have a high-energy dog and encourage them to jump too high or twist, etc. Not that my dog has actually hurt himself — there were just moments in the beginning when I realized that I needed to chill out with what I was doing so that he didn’t fall and hurt himself because he was getting so insanely focused on getting the toy. And I got overly focused on keeping it away from him (it’s an interactive game, really), and he’s a very fast, very agile dog. Basically I ended up just letting him get it more often until we both got used to it. The need to be careful and safe is well-described in the product instructions though, so if you read them and act responsibly, this is a fantastic toy for your dog. We call it the “doggy fishing pole” and use it almost daily to siphon off a few gallons of energy from our very young and extremely active dog. I still use the treats though, because now he sees that as his reward for catching the toy, and lets go of the toy almost immediately when I step forward with the treat. So with that plan, I think the toy is going to last for years and years. And if/when the bungee cord or the toy on the end fails, I imagine I will be able to easily replace it myself. It’s true that it’s “just“ some PVC pipe with various items attached to it that anyone could make themselves, but I think it’s been pretty carefully engineered and tested to work well, and at this price I have zero desire to try to re-engineer something like this myself. It work straight out of the box, no assembly required, and no explaining to your dog. My dog got it instantly and was crazy for it. This is a just great product and I highly recommend it.

We got our dog when she was a 10 lb puppy and now she is a big 71 lb puppy. This is honestly the only toy that has lasted, she has destroyed so many toys… not only is it durable but she loves it, a good way to get out some of her zoomies without having to play chase with her. One warning: she can now catch birds midair, not sure if she would have developed that skill without us playing with this toy almost every day, so I don’t blame the toy at all but it might have had something to do with it… as you can see from the picture she has chewed the handle a bit but honestly this is nothing compared to the damage she usually does. I also love that you can switch out end piece.

I have a puppy that has more energy than any other dog on earth. She's a malinois. I can take it out there and ask for the puppy to "sit" then we play with it. Winter has been brutal here. Hard to exercise the dogs when it's 10°F outside. 5-10 minutes of "fishing pole" in the basement seems to be enough to help get that energy out.

When the weather is nicer, we use this outside, too. It's nice when you don't have the time for a long walk and the dog needs to get some exercise.

A problem for some may be that your dogs do not care to chase the lead. We have one who always will. Another will chase if we put a favorite toy on it. And the third dog stands there and looks at the other two like "What are you doing?"

We've purchased two of the other kinds of leads - thinner pole and line. Those both got destroyed quickly. The pole snapped. Duct taping worked for a bit. But that wasn't ideal. The line was thin and eventually snapped.

This flirt pole is definitely better than those others.

It's durable PVC pipe vs fiberglass rode. And the line is made of a thicker elastic cord.

However, if we let the dog have this alone, she will destroy it. If we are not using it with her, we store it where she cannot find it. She will chew the toy right off the line if left alone with it. And, she's found it in the past and done that.

You could probably repair (or even build one) yourself. IMO, it's not worth the hassle. This is well made and reasonably priced. We will buy another one in a year or so when this one gets destroyed.
