How to Survive the Wilderness: The Playbook for the Entrepreneur and High Performer Kindle Edition

4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 11 ratings

The inspiration for this three-part playbook for the entrepreneur and the high performer is a culmination of my education, hundreds of hours of self-development and professional development, and years of experience as a successful entrepreneur.

Taking all the nuggets from my top ten must-read books, I aggregated all the content along with that experience to make it easier for the
entrepreneur and the high performers to find a direct path to growing themselves, the people around them, and their respective businesses.

I believe that the employee comes first as much as your customer does.
Sir Richard Branson said, “if you take care of your employees, they will take care of your clients.” I also know that if you can change yourself, you can change your environment and maybe even change the world, one person at a time.

After my father passed away in 1996 at the young age of 62 from a four-year battle with early on-set Alzheimer’s, I had packed up all the guilt and grief from his passing into a neat little ball and buried it as deep as it could go. I spent the next sixteen years adopting stoicism as a tool for an international business career, never getting vulnerable and mostly being a chameleon in just about every situation. I was almost forty before I realized the damage that it had done to me personally. I was no longer me, and I was exhausted. It was time for a change, and that needed to start with some much-needed self-development. It was time to exit the business I was in and move on to a different environment.

Since the end of 2013, I have been
coaching many businesses, entrepreneurs, and high performers. Several years ago, I even took an equity position with one of my clients and became the president of that business. My business partner and I have done some amazing things with that business, from multiple acquisitions to completely turning around a 28-year-old company and setting it up for a potential eight-figure sale. That is no small feat, and it got me thinking that many small businesses, entrepreneurs, and high-performers are neglected or simply don’t have the resources to access the tools that have contributed to my success.

In most cases, they don’t even know these tools even exist. About 67% of businesses with employees only last for two years, while less than 50% of businesses last five years, putting the majority of those entrepreneurs in survival mode, working hard to hopefully thrive someday. Only 4% of businesses in the US make it $1 million of revenue, while even less make it to $10 million.

If you had a road map to get you there a little quicker, would you want it? That’s what
SurTHRIVEal Gear and this book is all about. It is a road map to go from just Surviving the Wilderness to Thriving in your life and in your business.

A very successful colleague recommended this book to me, I assumed it was another business advice book, but found it to be so much more. It’s filled with fillable tables, QR codes, note sections, etc. This book forced my daydream ideas into action!

This book is 5 stars all the way around! Vincent provides a really solid groundwork for how to scale up and scale down within business and in one’s personal life. I truly appreciated his vulnerability throughout as he explained his own successes and failures. I find this tone often gets missed in a lot of business “how-tos.” Business coaches, high-performing CEOs, and other entrepreneurs usually only tell of how they made it to the top and their achievements. This can often lead people (like myself, for example) who are trying to navigate the business world to get discouraged when things get tough. Vincent, on the other hand, thoughtfully discusses what didn’t work, why it didn’t work, and how he handled getting on the right track. He provides great feedback on how to overcome challenges as they arise. My favorite nuggests, though, were his discussions on mindfulness, physical health, and mental health. We truly cannot be our best selves without doing those check-ins and taking care of ourselves from the inside out! I highly recommend this book to anybody who has recently started up their own business or even those who have been life-long entrepreneurs and may need that push to make some needed changes.

Vince provided a condensed guide to developing the key traits of what it takes to being a successful entrepreneur business person. He broke down each trait in separate sections that summed it up within a few pages. He then summarizes each section within each part of the book to reinforce the takeaway.

This book is a great resource full of tools that can be easily understood and implemented. The book will help you bring success within reach not only for your business, but also in creating a healthy and rewarding life style.

The authenticity through Vince's thought leadership is amazing. It is a phenomenal collection of personal triumphs, failures, and learnings succinctly summarized in a consumable way for the reader. Not only can the reader glean a ton of insights from the material, but they can also then put it into practice via the calls-to-action. These lessons can then be ingrained to enable continuous learning!

You can tell when reading this book that it was written by somebody who has been there. The stories line up well with the tips and advice. I like the aspect of it being a "playbook for the entrepreneur and high performer."

Covers A-Z as an entrepreneur. You can really tell Vince is speaking from experience. I really enjoyed how he created the sections for this book and designed it as a playbook to implement. Useful for an entrepreneur or CEO on their journey!

As a friend to Vince, who spent two of my greatest years protecting his backside on the football field, I did not know how this book would apply to me and my life. Currently, I am the Dean of Formation at a private Catholic high school. I deal with teenagers and Catholic faith; how in the world would this book apply? After reading the book, Vince puts out advice we all need to do in our lives. First, To Be Authentic... There is no way I could work with teenagers if I was not authentic. Teenagers have this special type of ESP that can detect if a person is being real or not. Being Authentic is something to be used across the board by everyone. And the notion of giving time and giving knowledge is extremely important in my field of work. The reason why I chose this line of work is because someone in my past saw enough in me to see that I was more than societal troubles. I had more in my than following blindly and taking the wrong path in life. If I can do the same thing for at least one person, than I feel as if I was a success. Vince brings this opportunity up many times throughout his book and it helped me definitely solidify many beliefs that I have always had roaming throughout my brain, heart, and soul.

I've always admired people i've run across in life who stay motivated and can do so many things at once. Time management is key to business, being a successful leader and to managing ones daily personal schedules. With my busy life and entertaining ideas about starting my own business, I stumbled upon this book by Vincent. I especially enjoyed the chapters on being accountable to others and owning your calendar. They are key chapters that help with ways to keep you driven so that you can make your limited hours during a day more productive and ultimately allow you to accomplish more than you ever could have imagined. Above all, this book is a handy guide and is easy to reference quickly to keep me on track and remind me of the things I need to focus on to take things to the next level. I loved the many themes in the book that were touched on, including those about giving back, paying things forward as well as ideas i've learned playing team sports my whole life about drowning out the noise, leading by example and not doing things alone. I look forward to reading additional books by this author as i continue on my journey!
