"An exciting vision of the future" --Michael Eric Dyson

Rob Bell's Everything Is Spiritual is an unexpected and compelling invitation to see your life in a whole new way.

We have the great moments of our lives, the highs, those times when we soar, when it all makes sense, when it feels like it all has purpose and meaning. And then there are all those other moments―the lows and aches and failures and struggles and experiences that leave us wondering what the point of it all is. Are our lives ultimately bits and pieces and fragments―you try to find a little peace and hope and then it’s over? Or is there more going on here?

In our increasingly polarized and disoriented world,
Everything Is Spiritual gives us a radical new take on how it all fits together, how it works, how it’s all connected. Part memoir, part extended riff on the quantum nature of reality, part history of the universe, Rob Bell takes us back through the twists and turns and struggles of his story in order to help us see the larger story so that we can reconnect with our story.

Everything is Spiritual is *SO GOOD*
I didn't pay much attention to Rob Bell until his attempted cancelling prior to the release of Love Wins in 2011. I wondered what was so dangerous that John Piper (#farewellrobbell) thought we should censor ourselves from even entertaining the ideas. Reading, listening, and watching Bell over the next year or so played a formative role in the evolution of my own faith, the inspiration to start a new way to do and be church, and sparked a flame to give myself permission to ask questions and seek a God much deeper and wider than my childhood faith allowed. Since then, he became a teacher from afar yet always so close to my thoughts and feelings before I could even articulate them myself. In the midst of the uncertainty, the chaos of the pandemic, the anxiety of election season, the ever increasing awareness of unfairness and inequality and pull toward justice, with the world seemingly participating in a collective existential crisis with the destination yet to be determined, Bell brings forth wonder and meaning and hope and connectedness and inspiration, an encouragement to leap into the mystery and joy of life."Do you see it?Do you see what we get to experience?Put your hand on your heart. Can you feel it?Everything is spiritual. There's a universe there in your chest,a cosmos in your heart. We know there's more,We've known the entire time. What a gift. All the wonder and awe.I feel like I'm just getting started.I can't imagine where it's going next. It's like an endless invitation. And we get to say yes.Again and again and again."(Bell, "Everything is Spiritual, pp. 306-307).

Having sort of held him at arm's length for a long time, I'm surprising myself in writing this, but.... I found Rob Bell's newest book, EVERYTHING IS SPIRITUAL, profoundly good, with a few caveats. It is a sort of CONFESSIONS (ala Augustine) on his ever-evolving spiritual and personal journey. It's written in his quirky stream-of-consciousness style (with no chapters in 300 pages) which I found challenging at times, and a bit exhausting, but worth it in this case. Very honest, and very insightful in many ways. (For those into enneagram-speak, the book is very "4" and I am assuming Bell is too.)

As an essentially "personal journey" reflection, the book is very much from a heterosexual male perspective, though not in an ideological or assertive way. Bell has previously affirmed same-gender marriage, but he uses binary language and gendered assumptions along the way.

Bell is age 50 at this point, and the book feels like a "mid-life" sort of piece. I'm finding myself musing on what the next 15-20 years will bring for/from him? For those of us "further along" in the life process, something like Parker Palmer's ON THE BRINK OF EVERYTHING provides a good complement to Bell's book. But, for where he's at in the journey, I find Bell's book remarkable.

"I want it to feel less like a read and more like a ride," Rob Bell writes about writing 'Everything Is Spiritual,' "like you’d been caught up in an extended riff about life and death and art and science that shows you how astonishing it is to be alive in such a way that it leaves you breathless and intoxicated in the end."
More than reading Rob Bell’s 'Everything is Spiritual,' I feel I experienced it. I hadn’t written in my journal in weeks, but toying with the ideas in this book there was so much to process. I explored my own life’s story: a history that predates my birth, wounds I’ve experienced, times I’ve lived in liminal spaces (am I there again now?), and began to learn who all of it has shaped me into who I am.
For those familiar with Bell’s work, this is not a rehash of his talk of the same name from nearly 15 years ago. This is a fresh approach to the idea that the world is intimately connected and cannot be divided into the secular and sacred. Bell nods again to physical science and roots his thoughts in the creation poem of Genesis, but the framework this time is his life’s story.
Bell’s basic premise is that all of it — every step, misstep, random chance, big decision, small choice, all of it — is spiritual. God is in the midst of our lives from beginning to end, whether we know or acknowledge it.
The master communicator begins, “My grandma kept cash in her bra.” Who doesn’t want to keep reading?

This book has many parts, the one that resonated with me was about the THRESHOLDS of life ( page 192) , when we cross over from one place to another. Rob just doesn’t talk about a move in location but a moving away from the known to the unknown. I had been through such a change. My experience had been so strong that I had divided my life into before and after. Perhaps you have too? This benchmark left me with many questions, primarily WHY? As Rob articulates his experiences; I see mine. I realize I’ve been asking the wrong question. Actually, I shouldn’t even have been asking a question because the answers weren’t coming even after ten years. Rob helped me to see that living with an invitation instead of a question is much more compelling. He brings us through the events that shape us, transform us with powerful conclusions that “this is the way life is” (page 194). I think that anyone experiencing a dramatic threshold in life would benefit from reading this book. Anyone asking the question, NOW WHAT? Rob takes us beyond that question to NOW THIS! We’re here to step into our story. “Everyday the story can be more compelling, more meaningful, more mysterious, more surprising and more fascinating than before. “ It’s “full-bodied participation in the moment we’re in” (page 201). Its’ “constant flux” (page 229), never solid ground because Everything is Spiritual. This book is an invitation to see that Everyday is Spiritual.
