The World-Tilting Gospel: Embracing a Biblical Worldview and Hanging on Tight Paperback – June 24, 2011
Purchase options and add-ons
The first generation of Christians turned the world upside down. But the church today is being turned upside down by the world. Why? And why aren't we-with all our social medias and high-tech gadgets-more effectively producing Christ-centered, Gospel-liberated, biblically-instructed, world-tilting believers?
In The World-Tilting Gospel, popular blogger Dan Phillips lays out four reasons why the first believers had more impact on their culture than today's church has on contemporary society. Using a whole-Bible approach to the Gospel, Phillips shows who we really are, what kind of world we are really living in, who God really is, and what difference the Gospel really makes in our everyday lives. Drawing from decades of studying the Bible's Hebrew and Greek texts, Dan Phillips offers a conversational and engaging challenge to embrace a biblical worldview-and hang on tight.
"Pick this book up, flip to any page, and start reading. You won't want to put it down." --Robert L. Plummer, author of 40 Questions About Interpreting the Bible
"This book is a great tonic for the postmodern tendencies that poison so many young minds today."--Phil Johnson, Executive Director of Grace to You Ministries and cofounder of the Pyromaniacs blog
"Dan Phillips is both easy and edifying to read. The World-Tilting Gospel is a sound introduction to what it means to be followers of Jesus Christ. I recommend it widely." --Ligon Duncan, President of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals

About the author

I have enjoyed writing since I was very young. My first attempted opus was a rambling science-fiction tale, undertaken (and never finished) in my pre-teen years. I remember one line which gave next-oldest sister great merriment. As I recall it, I was attempting to describe a character who was a nurse. I delivered myself of this: "Beneath her cold, harsh posterior beat a heart of gold."
The line reveals two things at least about me. First, I needed a lot of seasoning (e.g. to avoid hackneyed cliches "like the plague" -- or at least to use them correctly). Second, I needed something worth writing about.
The first has continued over the years, honed in academic writing, newspaper columns, papers, tracts, online forums, and blogs.
The second only started in February of 1973, when God absolutely transformed my life by bringing me to faith in Jesus Christ. If you like, you can read more about that, starting here: http://bit.ly/11LuSY.
One of the biggest results of this transformation in my life was the conversion of a mushy-minded, undisciplined non-student into someone bent on serving Christ with all I had. It worked out partly in dedication to the Biblical sciences such as Hebrew and Greek, and work at various educational institutions.
Over and through it all was a unifying obsession with knowing God by knowing His word, doing it, and helping others know it and Him. I needed personally to have a firm and deep grasp, and I dearly desired to pass on everything I got to others. I have always been a slow study. Therefore, when I "get" something, I can usually break it down in a way that any willing hearer or reader can "get" it too.
So that's my aim, in writing: to take everything I've "gotten" from the deepest, hardest, and best Bible study I can do, and put it out there where any willing reader can get at it.
God has been exceedingly good. Gracious souls ranging from published PhDs to those who concluded their formal education at a young age have said they profit from my writing. Pastors and other church leaders are using the books for ministry throughout North America, Australia, and the United Kingdom. For that, all the glory goes to God alone.
If you haven't done so yet, I hope you'll become one of those to share the benefit of what I've had the joy of uncovering. After all, what I have been given, I've been given to share with you.
Currently I pastor the dear folks at Copperfield Bible Church in Houston, Texas.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2012I decided to buy this book after reading a positive review of it by Jay Adams.
Specifically, I bought it because of the first six words of his review: "There's nothing new in this book."
Yes. I did say that it was a positive review. As a matter of fact, the author of The World Tilting Gospel (TWTG), Dan Phillips, commented on it, "...they're sweet, sweet words to me."
The words of TWTG were sweet to me as I took it up and read. "The greatest need of the church today is a strategic, full-orbed, robust, biblical grasp of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and its transformative implications. We don't need more glitz or glamour, better marketing or programs, snazzier décor or entertainment. We do need a whole-Bible grasp of the Gospel." (Introduction, Pg. 19)
TWTG doesn't disappoint; spelling out the Gospel clearly, and framing it biblically to show how it relates to and tilts the world.
"We're a mess. What we need to do is rub the sleep-dust out of our eyes, pull the plugs out of our ears, get out of our recliners, and hit the Book. We need to expose our hearts to the true, howling darkness of our sin, and the blinding blaze of God's holiness. We need to rivet our attention on the overflowing majesty of the person of Jesus Christ..." (Chapter 14, Pg. 300)
Yeah. That's straightforward talk. You'll read a lot of that in this book.
The World-Tilting Gospel will appeal to agnostics and theological novices for its readability and clarity, and to lay scholars and seminary students for its depth and breadth. I can think of a few mainline ministers who could use a refresher course in the summation of salvation it offers as well. It presents the `old, old story' in a fresh, appealing way. Don't take that to mean the truth is sugar-coated; the expression `gilding the lily' doesn't apply here. TWTG is rough and rigid where the gospel is rough and rigid; and it is soft and sweet where the gospel is soft and sweet.
TWTG may be an answer to the problem identified in Michael Horton's Christless Christianity. The churches that Horton challenges in his book would do well to study TWTG which presents the good news captivatingly, but without so-called `relevant' fanfare, shock-value or worldly means. What Horton says is missing from the center of many churches is the focus of Phillips' book - the good news of Jesus Christ.
What I like most about TWTG is that it is structured like a pyramid, with one course built solidly upon another, tapering upward toward the peak. But the book doesn't end with just a single point. When it reaches that expected dénouement; it's fireworks time! Instead of a single point of light, there is an explosion of truth and beauty and love and mercy and praise and glory and joy all directed at the person and work of Christ Jesus.
Before I even finished reading the book, I purchased additional copies and gave them to a few cherished friends. Buy yourself a copy and do the same.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2011If I could use one word to describe TWTG, it would be "rich." From start to finish, the book is rich in both content and style. Dan's blog style carries into the book perfectly: serious but not somber, funny but not flippant, and packed to the brim communicating full biblical truths in an accessible and understandable way.
TWTG starts by asking a very important question: Why aren't (most) of the Christians today burning up the world like those in the first century?
The rest of the book proceeds to answer that question logically, biblically and systematically, by answering these other questions: Who Are We? What Has God Done For Us? How Do We Get In? How Do We Get Going?
Any person at any point in their spiritual lives could pick up TWTG and benefit from it. There were many points in the reading where I had to stop and set the book down for a while, sometimes days, to really ponder what I had read. It took me weeks to finish it. There was a lot to chew on and digest, mentally, which is what I look for in books about faith.
The fourth segment of the book was where I became most invested. It essentially deals with the "Well, now what do I do?" stage that comes after salvation. How do I find victory in my daily life? How do I become more like Christ and less like the world? Dan outlines three very popular wrong approaches to this question and then shows us what the Bible teaches.
I think I've gone through each of those phases at one point or another, specifically the one he calls "crisis upgraders." That is, the idea that there is a quick-fix one-touch solution or formula for instant spiritual maturity. If I just do this Bible study, go to this retreat, follow this plan, etc., then I am *guaranteed* to see access some fruit of the spirit or spiritual gift heretofore inaccessible to me with little-to-no struggle or trial. I'll go from a "lesser" Christian to a "super" Christian in 1 easy step!
I admit, throughout my life, I have definitely thought of some people as being some kind of first-class Christians while I'm just a second-class one. The ones who seem to have it all together naturally, who apparently never have to struggle or ever have a hair out of place. They followed that 1-step plan, figured out the "secret formula" to holiness, and were inside God's special-special circle, and I wasn't.
In reality, as Dan shows us from the Bible, there is really only one kind of Christian - the adopted, redeemed child of God. There's not an "elite member" status. There aren't people who have a special access to God that the rest of us don't. There aren't Christians who have the Holy Spirit and Christians who don't.
That's why we don't need any earthly mediators to approach God on our behalf, or have to perform some special ritual to "fully" receive the Holy Spirit. As soon as we become a child of God, we're in fellowship with Him, and as it says in Hebrews, we can "approach the throne of Grace with confidence." And we have full access to the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives, which was probably my favorite chapter (13).
I could go on and on, but I'll finish by saying I cannot recommend TWTG highly enough. It will make you think, make you laugh, make you cry (or maybe that's just me), and goad you to a deeper understanding of who God is and what He wants for your life and this world. I can see TWTG being on my regular reading rotation for a while.

This is a great book! I can't explain how much good this book has done for me. Everyone should have a copy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dan shows you the biblical way, the better way, the surer way
There is far too much today that passes as orthodox, genuine Christianity. Much of what is taught today by so-called "Christian" leaders is a weak, watered-down message, that has no saving efficacy. It is not biblical but merely a continuation of man-centered 'truths' that have existed from the beginning. When you consider the amount of souls which rest their eternal state to these empty messages and impotent leaders, it is very sad indeed.
Enter "The World-Tilting Gospel" (#TWTG) by Dan Phillips. It beautifully paints a BIBLICAL picture of who are, how we got here, who God really is and how we can have everlasting life in Christ, and live that life in a God-glorifying way. The endorsement by Phil Johnson explains it succinctly: "This book reveals why [Dan Phillips] is such a careful, critical thinker: because his worldview is shaped by Scripture and centered on the timeless truth of the Gospel"
This book is undoubtedly a foundational resource for any believer, especially those who are new in the faith. I would think there is MUCH UTILITY in providing this resource to people who profess to believe in Christ yet have no discernible fruit to mark that faith and/or believe things which are contrary to His word and revealed truth in the Scripture. Dan forces you, by pointing you to all the relevant Scripture, to consider the erroneous ways in which we believe is "right thinking" for the Christian.
His chapters on 'progressive sanctification' are amazing. There is soooo much wrong with how we think we need to pursue our individual sanctification, it isn't funny. He demonstrates why they are wrong, and points you to Scripture for the 'right' ways. He is a wonderful teacher and pastor. He does point out that these erroneous ways get a foothold, in part, because there is a veil of truth in their methods. But Dan shows you the biblical way, the better way, the surer way. Very edifying.
I also want to note that Dan has a great sense of humor, and it comes out throughout the whole book. He is able to make you laugh, with his illustrations, yet never insults the seriousness of the content. It's a gift! Dan also has a great ability to provide illustrations that make you say, "Ahhhh, I never thought of it that way!"
This a fantastic resource and recommended highly. Read it yourselves. Share it with others. Buy this for the family member who you've shared the Gospel with. Buy it for the professing Christian who acts more like the world than Christ.
