Milo's Eyes: How a Blind Equestrian and Her "Seeing Eye Horse" Saved Each Other Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 172 ratings

The extraordinary bond between Lissa Bachner, a young blind woman and Milo, a neglected, frightened horse, helped them overcome staggering odds to become one of America's most inspiring, successful riding teams in the world of show jumping.

Lissa Bachman was born with a passion for horses and won her first blue ribbon at age five. Other awards would follow as a young rider, and for years Lissa trained with jumpers, tackling more difficult leaps, and working to perfect her ride.

When blindness struck in her teens, it appeared her passion for riding would come to an end. How could she jump hurdles when she could barely navigate through her own home?

But success, trust, and love came to Lissa when her trainer convinced her to buy a “diamond in the rough” from Germany. On News Year's Eve, Milo arrived at the barn, frightened and neglected. Taking one look at his shaking, filthy body, Lissa promised Milo that he would only know kindness. In return, Milo took special care of her in the ring. Through  countless eye surgeries and the many months of training and work, Lissa and Milo formed a magic bond that made them inseparable. And winners.

With effortless humor and penetrating compassion, Lissa weaves a story of unfaltering faith in Milo, and the unconditional love they shared.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Lissa Bachner was born with a passion for horses and won her first blue ribbon at age 5. However, blindness struck her in her teens, and it threatened to end her passion for riding.

It wasn’t until Lissa met Milo, a filthy, emaciated, neglected, horse from Germany, that their instant bond cemented their domination in the jumping ring and their deep friendship outside the ring. As Lissa’s eyesight worsened, Milo instinctively knew he had to be her eyes and protect her.

This inspirational story of Lissa and “Magic Milo” is one of going from victim to victor.

About the Author

Lissa Bachner grew up in Great Falls, Virginia. She was three years old when she first sat on a horse and by the time, she was five, she was competing in local horse shows. Soon after her sixth birthday, Lissa was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and a rare immune disorder that attacked her eyes called uveitis. Her left eye was the weaker of the two and when Lissa was thirteen, her retina detached leaving her permanently blind in that eye. Doctors and surgeries became a way of life for Lissa but no matter what, as soon as her doctors gave her the "okay," she was back on a horse. In 1996, Lissa graduated from Skidmore College with a BA in English. Two years later, while living in Maryland, Lissa's left eye developed complications and had to be enucleated. While struggling to make decisions about her future and trying to get used to her prosthetic eye, Lissa purchased a misunderstood, yet talented horse from Germany. He arrived in Maryland, New Year's Day, 1999. Lissa and her horse, Milo, quickly developed a powerful bond. Her love brought the champion out in Milo. When glaucoma began to strip Lissa of her remaining vision, that same love gave her the strength to keep fighting for her sight. Lissa lives in Wellington, Florida, with her three dogs and her horse, Marvel.

I never write reviews. But in this case, I have to try…if I can type through my tears. Lisa’s Bachner takes you on an incredible journey in this book. It is just SO WELL WRITTEN! I knew almost nothing about horses, but saw her interview on the news last week and immediately ordered her book. A “blind” equestrian whose partnership with a very special horse leads to a love story that had me weeping one moment and cheering the next. The book is so well crafted to keep you in suspense about what will happen next, while at the same time carrying you into her world of competition and loss and having to recalibrate her entire life after losing her sight. I learned so much about horses and the sport of riding. I fell in love with Milo, and will never forget his story. It is truly magical. Thank you Lissa for sharing your soul in such a beautiful and inspiring way. My tears are still flowing, and I can’t even put a name to the emotional overload I am feeling right now (just finished the last page!). Mostly I am just in awe of you and Milo, and thankful that you two found one another and proved that miraculous things can happen when humans and animals are blessed to have such a nurturing soulful relationship. This book is a great blessing in my life and gives me courage to deal with the reality of my own hardships. A must read for ALL animal lovers, and anyone who needs help finding hope and courage in a dark time.

Milo's Eyes reminded me that all aspects of life have their ups and downs (an understatement in author Lissa Bachner's life journey). Lissa's story is proof positive though that perseverance and patience will get you through them all. Never giving up, but also knowing (or not knowing at the time) that's it's okay to question, struggle and be mentally exhausted is just part of the journey toward coming out on the other side where happiness resides - that is my take-away from this beautifully told love and adventure story.

Lissa Bachner has written one of the most inspiring, authentic and heartfelt stories about her amazing trials, tribulations and TRIUMPHS! She has a true gift and talent in being able to bring a reader into her past where a person holding a book in their hand is left feeling like they were actually: in the stable, in the ring, and actually riding on Milo or hugging him around his neck; sitting in an eye doctor's examining room having a heart to heart with her amazing mom Marcia; being kidded with great love by her step-dad Howard; being supported and loved by Aunt Karen and Aunt Jane; rolling on the ground playing with Spike; riding in the car being lifted up or given tough love talks by trainers Bob or Rachel; etc. etc. And it's impossible to forget Tom, Ben, Linda, Sarah, Dr. Henry and, even the not so nice 3 women at the picnic table at the Middleburg Classic.

Like others have said, pick this book up and you will not be able to put it down!

I certainly hope that this true and inspiring story about unconditional love, patience, perseverance and kindness will someday find it's way to the big screen!

This book was recommended to me by a friend I bought it, reluctantly, because I thought it would be just another book about an animal and a human. I couldn’t have been wrong. This is not just another book. This is my new Bible. Milo‘s eyes helped me in ways, I never thought possible. If the author is half the person she is in the book, then I hope to meet her one day and thank her as for her horse, Milo, I’m in love with him I’ve never ridden a horse, but I would spend my last dollar to meet this one, although, It’s not possible I hoped one day watch him on the big screen I can’t get enough of this book I’ve read it 10 times and I keep going back for more. Everyone should read this the author writes so beautifully. I felt like I was there, spoiler alert you will cry the whole time, and when you’re not crying, you will be cheering , this book made me feel things I didn’t know was possible. I’m praying to the Hollywood movie people to make this into a movie or a series series, so Milo will live on.
The characters of Rachel Kennedy and Robert Crandall are so beautifully detailed. You can tell that they are exceptional humans and the author is so proud of her friends and loves them so deeply… Like I said, everyone should read this and thank you to the offer for writing it in a way it has saved my life
She’s my new Taylor swift of the literary world

All I can say is wow. Thank you, Lissa Bachner for sharing your story with us.

For those who have not read this yet - just do it. This one is worth every single moment. I've had that one-in-a-million horse myself, and with one eye (my right is prosthetic) can very much relate to making adjustments in the show ring, but jumping? Not just jumping, but jumping and winning ... at 3'6" in an extraordinarily competitive division. Lissa Bachner is my newest equestrian heroine.

My daughter is an equestrian, owns two show horses and a tack company. So we have lived through this type of life. This book, and Lissa's story, was such an emotional and inspiring read. I could not put it down. Very well written. The good and the bad that happened.
The best of this story for me, was to share the experience that any real animal lover feels- that "animals" are so much more intelligent and emotional than they are given credit for. We are their brothers and sisters, not their "owners". We just lack a common language.
I was on a ski trip while reading it, and struggling with physical challenges. All the time I kept thinking of Lissa and Milo. It helped.

This book made me think about the challenges of riding with vision impairment and the courage to not just ride but to jump. The trust between the horse and rider was amazing. It might be difficult for a non-rider to really grasp that significance but as a life long rider it really was meaningful to me.
