The Magic Eye: The Cinema of Stanley Kubrick Paperback – April 30, 2024

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 14 ratings

In 1969, Stanley Kubrick suppressed a book about his films because it dared to touch on their flaws. Kubrick, fresh from the Oscar-winning success of 2001: A Space Odyssey, promised to fight "tooth and nail" to prevent The Magic Eye: The Cinema of Stanley Kubrick going into print. More than five decades later, and a quarter-century after Kubrick's death, Neil Hornick's book is finally published.

About the Author

Neil Hornick was born in London in 1939. He studied Psychology at University College London and, after a period travelling abroad, earned a post-grad Certificate in Drama with Distinction at Bristol University in 1965-6. He was artistic director of The Phantom Captain performance company for 36 years, and from the mid-1980s he also ran a literary consultancy, Reading & Righting, under his pen-name, Robert Lambolle. Still resident in London, he is married and has a son and daughter. He believed he was retired until Paul Cronin dusted him off and put him to work on resurrecting his once-suppressed book about film director Stanley Kubrick. His complete professional and personal archives were acquired by the British Library in 2022.

While not the hack job Kubrick kept from being released, it’s not the best written or most balanced of the many Kubrick crit/bio pieces either. Lots of interesting asides here though and interesting that the nature of Kubrick’s creative control issues have always been a part his unique artistic vision it’s fascinating to find the links to which he’d block this piece that is an honest and fairly balanced OPINION of Kubrick complex and wide-ranging work. Interesting if unfortunately missed out on a lot of later work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yeux grand ouverts

3.0 out of 5 stars Accurate title: The partial cinema of Stanley Kubrick

Very interesting....as far as it goes, (thus the indifferent rating).
Kubrick had publication of this book supressed in 1969, he died in 1999, the book has just been published in 2024.
It would have been rather more informative, for potential buyers, had the Amazon website highlighted the fact that only Kubrick's films up until, '2001: A Space Odyssey' are considered within this book.
Therefore films from 'Clockwork Orange' through to 'Eyes Wide Shut' are not included.
