Good for the money, but buy a backup. Detailed review of 3 years of use with Nicrew lights
4 Stars
Good for the money, but buy a backup. Detailed review of 3 years of use with Nicrew lights
I've owned this light for since June or July of 2022. I've used the arm, which would do better if it didn't bend out into the room. I've used all whites, the timer, all blues, and I've even gone so far as to chain it over a sump tank with limited overhead space. Today, I realized that my ability to mix spectrum is completely gone after leaving the whites on 100% for a few months. I no longer have a third choice while using the wire attached controller. You will notice I have the product 4 stars. In the grand scheme of reef lights bang for buck, this is a 5 star reef light. However, reliability/ customisability problems experienced by myself and other users over time would cause you to understand this product isn't entirely bulletproof. My basic issues with it:1. The adapter is big so it takes up a lot of space on the power strip if you aren't creative.2. I lost the ability to mix blue and white so now I'm running it all blue. This means it has limited efficacy for me moving forward.3. It wouldn't be hard to program in more light settings into the device but the $50 controller was created as an upsale instead of pricing the light properly at $110 in the first place and shipping the unit with the controller.4. I use many knock off products and I wish companies using barrel jacks began shipping a heat shrink sleeve for them to prevent sparking or unexpected disconnections.5. The product should advertise the ability to hang in low clearance areas with a simple chain, rope, hook, etc.6. In a power surge or outage, your timer will lose the start date. This means if it's 6pm and your day on the reef light was ending, and you get a power outage, when it reboots it will start immediately back at daytime and you'll get your reef slapped with double the photoperiod you intended. I recommend the wyze plugs or a similar smart plug with a programmable timer to avoid this hangup entirely.I use this on my quarantine tank so light isn't super important to me but at the end of the day my nicrew products always develop some problem or another after a period of 1-2 years and I love the spectrum they put out for the money but if you are serious about reefing then you need to eventually pony up for more reliable products down the road. Nicrew makes great products but reef lights are treated very poorly when you think about it and being able to stand up to general use and wear is important to me. I will always have nicrew lights in my backup supply of lights (I have 3 of the 150w hyperreef and I run nicrew currently on all my tanks with great success) , but I'm currently saving up for a product with larger power supply because I have had to modify the ones that fail to accept better power supply. Nicrew if you read this I'm happy to pay $300 for hyper reef with controller and proper power supply pre wired. Your 150w hyper reef power supply currently runs at max of rated load which is very unsafe and fire hazard. Many users I have talked to also have overhearing power supply problems.Photos of my reef tanks are attached. The power supply comparison I am talking about is attached. If nicrew fix power supply problem with heat dissipation I'd be happy to rate 5 stars. I know this probably makes the light more expensive for other people but I think reliable product feature like this is important if customer has to either buy one anyway down the road to fix the problem or write off your product as bad/limited shelf life when the lights are actually an amazing product and it's mostly just a victim of corners being cut on LED driver. If nicrew fixed this problem then I wouldn't be changing to light system that has fixed this problem and I think the lights would be much better reputation than the amazing reputation the already have, I just want to make sure I give fair review and I think the pros outweigh the cons of you are willing to invest to fix the problem as a end user or if Nicrew willing to raise the price but fix the problem themselves as manufacturer.I have to go buy more LED driver, or aluminum block to dissipate heat properly from the unit to avoid burnout/ failure of unit and I recommend all nicrew used do this if you don't want to buy another one down the road. Yes it's not fun but resoldering new LED driver is easy if nicrew not willing to update product and you'll get much longer life out of the lights. They are really truly that good and I actually would guess the failure of mixing light I have is electrical overload based problem from overuse.Overall very good product and better than most on the market. Many more expensive lights, even Radion and many "best market brands" do not have proper power supply so this is more of a problem relating to building a good product for myself that will last many years instead of repurchasing or having backups all the time.Every time I have reefers over they always love the spectrum of my nicrew and my lights so I will probably end up buying 3 more 150w backups but given price of the this unit you may as well rebuy it if something goes wrong. It is that good for the money. The laser temps attached are for 150w nicrew power supply, and my modified one of Nicrew reads this review. But you can see nicrew grows coral very well and of they want to sponsor me to to talk about their other products I am happy to provide logical feedback on them. At the end of the day, many reefer think buying fancy brand is the safe thing to do but unfortunately everyone wants to make money so you as hobbyist need to not be naive and learn to read electrical output ratings of these products when they are in use and that goes for all electronics in reef tank not just nicrew products and not just lights. You are only as good as your habits.

Fantastic light! Mine is only set to around 50% brightness since it’s close to my nano, so it’s a pretty bright light. The only issue is the color strength and timing isn’t as customizable without the remote. BUT the remote is so worth getting! I’m leaving a link here just so you can find it, cause if you have a need for a nano light, this is it! With the low price of this light, the remote is so worth it!

You end up getting a well-worth light that comes with a very sturdy, adjustable light stand. and a if you get the remote it’s set.

And it’s still cheaper with both products than getting a nano light like AI.

And the light also has a diffuser built in between the LEDs!!! So more even spread!

I have bought several budget friendly lights on Amazon, when I saw this I thought it would be comparible to the little Lominie A20, but wow it’s huge! Atleast twice the size. It’s very very bright and I believe it can grow some of the more light demanding difficult corals out there. It is heavy but we’ll made and very sturdy. Very straightforward with how it works. The timer switch works good and you can adjust the color spectrum. I am probabaly going to buy another one to get better par in my 32 gallon flex, however I think one of these lights would be just fine for less demanding corals. Depending on what you consider “nano”, I’d say this light is suitable for more mid range tanks like 15-40 gallons. It is too much for my ten gallon. Right now it’s sitting on an evo and even for that tank it’s extremely bright. I’m very impressed. Save the $200 on the kessil and get this if you don’t care to customize.

This works perfectly on my cube 20.
I picked it up as a backup because the fan on my original light was going down and I needed a plan B
I never intended for it to replace a tricked out bell and whistles light costing 3 times more that I could control with my phone etc etc.
But that’s kinda what happened.
I didn’t mind any of the preset color, blues are really good.
The moon setting is cool but I wish it also had a separate timer. That being said I kinda like being forced to check up on everything one last time when it’s 100% lights out.
It’s solidly made and the gooseneck was effortless to get attached.

Warning: Steel yourself! I gotta mention that the lights control switch is as barebones as you can get. The timer “starts” when you plug it in so if you have a UPS it’s really no issue. You might feel limited by the presets but I found a great W/B mix for my eye without needing 100% on any channel.

Returning to reef keeping after several years away, I was daunted by the cost of lighting. My intent wasn't to be keeping $1000 coral specimens here. But I did want to at least have an enjoyable, economical setup. After doing some research, I decided to try using several Nicrew 30 lights suspended above my tank by the provided cables. At about $60 per light, there's really nothing else comparably affordable at this build quality. While other more expensive Kessils etc. allow much more precise color tuning, Nicrew allows rudimentary intensity adjustment of a blue/UV channel and "white" (with some greens, red, etc.) channel. The "white" channel isn't stellar, but the blue/UV is excellent, and corals glow quite nicely. Running a multiple lights with a mix of color channel intensities that promotes a bit more blue looks quite a bit better than it should at this price point. I'm mostly growing softies and some LPS, but everything is thriving. One note to mention is that I'm NOT using the stock controllers. It's a bummer that the bundled controller is rudimentary at best, but these can easily be used with just about any 20V DC power supply and LED controller out there. Find a timer/controller you like and you're off to the races. At the end of the day, the Nicrew 30 is a respectable entry level light that performs above its price point and when coupled with a good controller, can provide an excellent setup. Will it outperform a top end $600 light? Nope, but also there's not much else out there that can outperform this light at the $60-$70 price point.

Of course, if you’re looking for some primary lighting for a DT, this may not be the one (but could be). Mine is over a 60G breeder which is part of my somewhat elaborate sump system. I’m using it to light a section with a Scoly and 2 Plate Corals which struggling by being covered daily by our very active Bella Goby. All three have recovered beautifully with this light source.

The machining of this product is not good! I was able to remove the goose neck bracket from the light fixture BUT I could not get the bracket itself off the goose neck. Even using my own tools I could not get it off. I think they cross threaded it from the factory. NEXT complaint. The equipment the light comes with to hang the light will not screw into the pre-threaded hole. Its obvious the machining quality is very poor on this unit. I just spent an hour trying to get this to work. Just get the Kessil A80. Don't be cheap like me! I'm frustrated with the fact I wasted my time on this light.

1 Year update: 13 gallon is pretty much packed at this point and the light has preformed exceeding well! adjusting the lighting is pretty basic and the gooseneck is of good quality! Great light for easier kept corals (haven’t tried any SPS).

Stock list:
2 clowns
1 large cleaner shrimp
8-9 snails
Corkscrew Anemone
Corals - 2 large Gsp’s, 2 different Zoas, Duncan, toadstool leather and cabbage leather, Leptastrea, small Kenya

Highly highly recommended for those of us on a relatively small budget.

So far these lights are performing very well. I have yet to put any corrals into my tank but the color and intensity of the lights is more than expected for the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Looks great!

The light looks amazing and is really bright. I bought two of them for my 35 Gallon reef tank. They look great, the lights are bright and par is on point. The only thing I wish is that they were remote controlled or came with actual timers rather then having to buy them separately for $40 each. You can also opt for timer or smart switches for cheaper But otherwise worth the money overall. The light literally does the same job as other lights out there on the market for $400 especially if you do buy the timers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Purchase

When I started in the hobby I didn't want to overspend. I got this light when I started, but at 100% it grew a lot of algae in my 20-gallon long. I reduced it down to 30% for blue and 10% for white and my soft corals did very well. I slowly ramped it to 50% over the last 6 months and I am very happy with the results. When you start in the hobby, you don't want to invest too much money, so this was perfect.

It appears I am able to keep my anémones in the sump/refugium with this light as well as better control nutrients through macro algae growth. Provides a stable environment for sps corals in display tank. Will update in future how things go.
